One of the most enjoyable events on the programme is The Tug-of-War. Not only do the children get to compete against each other on a House basis, but if time permits, the annual "Grudge match between parents and children is held.

Mr. Jones' class challenged their parents to a tug-of-war and Mr. Jones added some extra muscle for the student cause (shown below).

The other "grudge match" is the annual Staff vs Parents vs Students, 4x100 metre relay. In a very, very popular win last year, the teachers took out the event comfortably (without one torn hamstring!). So interest in this year's event was enormous.

Congratulations to the Parents' Team who survived a very heated protest from the Staff Team to win narrowly in a photo finish. One teacher was quoted as saying, "If we hadn't dropped the baton, we'd have won by at least 60 metres. We was robbed!"

The Annual School Sports Day was held in Term 1 and was well attended by a large group of parents, friends and ex-students.

Students enjoyed the friendly rivalry between the four School Houses, Chandler, Mason, Nicolle and Shepherd. This rivalry has existed ever since the house system was first introduced in 1978.

Our Sports Day is conducted on a participation basis with all children encouraged to take part in all events, except the Championship Sprints and Team Relays. These events are contested by the fastest runners from each year level.

Although the main emphasis is on enjoyment, improving personal performances, skill development, fitness and participation by all, the Primary section of the school (Year 3-7) competes in a House competition. All children contribute points to their House for each event in which they participate.

The Junior Primary students (R-Yr2) participate in a programme based on skill development, enjoyment and participation by all.

Nevertheless, the students are very keen to succeed and achieve their best.

The photograph at right shows one Junior Primary student "soaking up" the atmosphere in The Water Race.

Note the position of the tongue!

The tension mounts as the final scores are about to be announced.

The final scores are announced by Mrs. Pauline Long who has been scorer and co-organizer for twenty-six years. Pauline will retire as a School Service Officer at the end of the 1999 School Year. Her contribution to Sports Day will be sadly missed.
