On
Sunday 22nd October 2000, the school held an extremely
successful and enjoyable Gala Day in the school
grounds. The weather was very kind and a large
crowd turned out to enjoy the carnival atmosphere. |
|
|
 |
There were many stalls
offering a wide assortment of items and produce. Each
class in the school was responsible for setting up and
manning the various stalls. For months leading up to
Gala Day, the children had been involved in
activities fostering the idea of "student
enterprise." |

|
Teachers,
students and parents all contributed to the successful
enterprises that were on offer during the day. Some of
the items available included:- cakes, plants, bottles,
nail art, gingerbread, books, balloons, tea towels,
doll's clothes, glassware, stamps, children's clothes,
jigsaws, jewellery, toys, home-made produce, jars,
show-bags, mosaics and a wide variety of food. |

In addition to the stalls there were
quite a few displays and demonstrations to provide
entertainment for the very large crowd. Pictured (above
left) are some of the magnificently turned-out vehicles
from members of the Southern Car Club. Year 6 student,
Jessica Sandru is seen (above right) performing a
demonstration of rhythmic gymnastics. Other performances
during the day were given by the Reynella East High
School Jazz Ensemble, the Aberfoyle Park High School
Band as well as demonstrations of calisthenics, highland
dancing and Yu Ki Do. |

The
success of these days can be measured in a number of
ways. This Gala Day not only raised approximately
$8500 but also strengthened the cooperative bonds that
exist between our school, its parents and students, and
the community at large. This wonderful community spirit
has been a consistent feature of the school for over a
hundred years. It is something of which everyone
associated with the school should feel justifiably
proud.
The school would like to thank
everyone who assisted in any way to the success of Gala
Day. Particular thanks to
Georgie Goldfinch and Dianne Gordon, who were ably
assisted by Chris Rogge. The Gala Day Committee worked
tirelessly and displayed considerable energy, commitment
and organizational skill in ensuring that everything
went so smoothly. The
staff are to be commended for their superb efforts. The
work that went into the preparations clearly
demonstrates the commitment and willingness of our
teachers and SSOs. The
students were absolutely fabulous. They demonstrated
many skills, confidence and a willingness to help with
preparations and packing up. There
was an amazing level of support from the parent body.
They generously donated produce and items for the
stalls, as well as providing hundreds of hours of their
valuable time to ensure the success of the day.
