On Tuesday 14th November, Co-Opera once again visited Happy
Valley. This year it was to present Puccini's, "La Boheme,"
the moving love drama about a group of young poverty-stricken
artists who
struggle with life and death in Paris at the end of the nineteenth
century. This opera has remained one of the best loved and most frequently
performed works, since its world premiere in
1897.

This is the
fourth year that Co-Opera has performed at our school,
following performances of "The Magic Flute"
in 1987, "Carmen" in 1998 and "The Marriage
of Figaro in 1999. Although the performances have been
levelled at a younger audience, each has retained much of
its unique sense of drama and theatre. |
Perhaps the performance can best be described
through the eyes of one of the students:-
"On Tuesday,
our school went to watch Co-Opera. They were performing a story
called La Boheme. It was very pretty and they all had lovely voices.
Mimi in the end suffered a tragic death which was very common in
those days, it was called T.B. My favourite singer was Musetta
who was a rich lady and a very close friend of Mimi. Mimi fell in
love with a man called Rodolfo, who loved her just as much.
My favourite Act was Act 2. In
one part of the Opera, Musetta threw a tantrum because she thought
no-one was paying her enough attention.
Some of the singers
were playing more than one character and one person played three
which was a bit confusing.
|
One of the funny
parts of the opera was when the two men were dancing and one
man pinched the other man's bottom. The other funny part was
when one man stuck a fish between the other man's legs.
Overall I
thought the Opera was wonderful."

Above: During the performance the cast
brought up some of the staff and children to become patrons of the
restaurant.
Before and after
the performance, the cast also took the opportunity to talk about
asthma and introduced those members of the cast who suffer
from the problem. These cast members explained how they are able to
sing, perform and overcome the effects of asthma. The Asthma
Foundation is one of the sponsors of Co-Opera.

After the
performance had finished a group of Miss Williams' students
performed their own concise version of La Boheme. It greatly
impressed the Co-Opera cast.
