One of the primary goals of Happy Valley School is to develop key competencies in the students. Among these key competencies are:-

Collecting, Analysing and Organising Information
Communicating Ideas and Information
Planning and Organising Activities
Working with Others in Teams
Using Mathematical Ideas and Techniques
Solving Problems
Using Technology

The Gala Day in October offered an excellent opportunity for students and teachers to develop enterprise activities which would involve the students in practising and experiencing many of the Key Competencies.

The variety of ideas that the classes came up with was fantastic. Some enterprises proved uneconomic and were put aside, others worked out and the classes developed the concept into a profitable business. All proved a valuable learning experience!

Right: Students from Mrs. Gabb's Year 7 class developed the idea of a Haunted House.

In the classrooms, enterprise activities were used to:
        illustrate lessons 'about' enterprise
introduce students to the notion of being enterprising
further develop teamwork and organisational skills
generate and evaluate creative ideas for projects
practise negotiation skills and other enterprising skills

During the whole process, classes were expected to conduct market research, draw up business plans and keep accurate financial records of their business ventures.

Classes were also able to apply to the School Finance Committee for 'set-up' loans of up to $200.

It was important for students to target their products carefully and ensure that their ideas were well promoted and advertised, particularly through School Newspapers and other local means.

The task for each class on Gala Day was to develop business enterprises that would make significant profits. Even though this was the goal, the process of engaging in and reflecting on enterprise activities was far more important. Nevertheless, the final result was outstanding ........ a profit of well over $8000!

All teachers, parents and students should feel extremely satisfied and excited about the end result. The school certainly came together as a team and worked in close cooperation and harmony. Everyone needs to be congratulated.
