Student Comments

"Performance Day was really good fun although it took a lot of time. We had to find or make our own props with our buddies."

Kristen Pankoke (Year 6)

"We learnt not to put our backs to the audience. We were organized but we all didn't know our words. I learnt a lot about cooperation with our buddies."

Alyse Wells (Year 6)
"I learnt lots from the other people in the group and how to include all members of the group by listening and working together."

Hannah Ridge (Year 6)
"All the groups were excellent and all did a great job. Performance Day was great. Well done, everybody."

Jennifer Jackson (Year 7)
"Performance Day went really well.  I enjoyed working with my buddy. Although our play went well, we did have some trouble getting our buddies to speak up. They did enjoy dressing up and acting."

Alicia Green (Year 7)

Above: Alicia and Scott perform their solution to "Cruelty to Zoo Animals."
"When the play started, we all got a bit nervous. We were the last group of the day. One thing I wouldn't do next time is bring a pet. Jennifer brought her bird, Karla and it flew off twice. We had a couple of disasters along the way, but overall it turned out quite well."

Hayley Sharp (Year 7)
"At first, the idea of planning a play from start to finish in such a short time seemed like a huge obstacle. On the day, we were so excited!"

Adrian Jones (Year 6)
"On the day, we had mixed feelings of nervousness, excitement and relief. Our buddies were very enthusiastic although they got a bit excited at times!"

Tom Cole (Year 6)

"I'm very happy with the effort of our team. It was a great experience and I enjoyed working with our buddies."

Stacey Moss (Year 7)

"It was hard to include the positive thinking. It was fun practising the play and on the day our play went quite well."

Brett Varnhagen (Year 6)

Performance Day provided an excellent experience for students wishing to gain selection in the school's Tournament of Minds team.
Performance Day provided an excellent opportunity to celebrate student success in our school.
Performance Day also provided an opportunity to strengthen the school's Peer Support programme.
Performance Day also highlighted the fact that learning experiences can be a whole lot of fun at Happy Valley School.
Performance Day did much to support the following school priorities:-

Performing Arts
  Program Achieve
  Creative Problem Solving

It was exciting to see small groups of students busy in all corners of the school, making props and back-drops, trying on costumes and rehearsing their plays.
Performance Day not only prepares Tournament of Minds team members for their competition in September, but it gives all students experience at creative thinking, performing and working successfully with others in a group.

Performance Day highlights the fact that learning experiences can be a whole lot of fun at Happy Valley School !

This year's Performance Day was held in the School Hall on Wednesday, 13th June. This is the second year that the school has conducted this event, after a very successful introduction in 2000.

Performance Day plays a small part in the school's on-going commitment to its Peer Support Programme. This programme attempts to provide children with the ability to cope better with the following:-
   Cooperation
   Communication

Feelings and Emotions

Relationships

Friendship

Obeying Rules

Team Building

Decision Making

Problem Solving

Self Awareness.

One of the major components of Peer Support at Happy Valley is  the use of Buddy Classes. During 2001, the following classes have been paired up.

Meredith Gabb (Year 7) with Heather Bath (Year 4)
D'Arcy Jones (Year 7) with Jacqui Brettig and Inge Liepe (Year 2)
Barb Williams (Year 6) with Sandra Bailey (Year 1/2)
Yvonne Ridge and Judy Miller (Year 6) with Leanne Caune (Year 1/2)
Doug MacLean and Darryl Draper (Year 5) with Sue Higgins (Year R/1)
John Pope (Year 4) with Anthea Goode (Reception)
Simon Mueller (Year 3/4) with Carmel Nicholson and Phyllis Carn (Year R/1)
Trudie Petho and Tracy Ranaldo (Year 3) with Shelley Saunders (Year R/1)

In the weeks leading up to Performance Day, each Buddy group is presented with five problems (see below). Each group selects one problem and demonstrates a solution by way of a five minute presentation. The most dynamic, confident solutions are chosen to perform on Performance Day. This year's theme was 'Confidence' and each group was encouraged to demonstrate positive self talk.

The plays showed in five minutes, how the groups solved their chosen problem, providing a lot of entertainment as they did.
The groups, all made up of younger and older students, learnt many problem solving and performing skills in both the preparation and presentation phases of their work.

Problems for 2001

  • You and a friend invent a game (or toy) that you are confident other children would love to have. You both decide to demonstrate your invention to the local toyshop owners in order to convince them to market it. You invite some friends along for the demonstration. You are very convincing.

  • You are at the zoo with a friend. Your parents are not with you. You witness a group of teenagers being cruel to the animals. You know that they have to be stopped but you also fear for your safety if you get involved. How do you solve this problem?

  • A famous person is coming to Adelaide and you have won a chance to ask the person some questions at a special media conference. You know you will be on TV. How do you feel?  What questions will you ask?  How will others help you be confident?

  •  You and the other children in your family decide to buy a special birthday gift for one of your parents. Once you've decided on your surprise gift you somehow get the money together. You buy the gift from a grumpy shop assistant. When you get the gift home, you discover a problem that means the gift has to be returned. You don't have much time because the birthday is the next day.

  • Your favourite local park is going to become a new housing estate unless the community has good reasons to fight to save it. You and some of your friends decide to take some action. What do you do and who do you involve?
