In 2002, a three year focus on The Arts was
commenced at Happy Valley Schools. This focus intends to raise the
profile of teaching and learning in The Arts. Our aim is for teaching
staff to develop and teach an expanded arts curriculum that is broad
in its scope.

From this, it is hoped that students will
benefit from increased opportunities to participate in all
aspects of the arts, a learning area that provides satisfying,
lifelong involvement and pleasure.
Teachers, Barb
Williams and Heather Bath were chosen to coordinate this
programme and during Week 6 of Term 3 organized an Art Electives
programme across the entire school. With the willing assistance
of a number of parents, teachers offered a wide choice of visual
arts experiences for students. The students were involved in
three workshops during the week. They either worked with the
same leader each time, or they changed activities each session. |
The theme for the
electives was "Art and other Cultures." Among the electives offered to
students were the following:-
Indian rangoli sand
pictures and mehndi hand patterns
Chinese yin yang
wall hanging and brush painting
Egyptian amulets,
mummies and papyrus drawings
Native North
American totems, rug designs and wall hangings
Maori masks
Indonesian baskets
Japanese koi fish
and origami
Aboriginal rock art
etchings, dreaming art, stencil art and bark paintings
Ecuadorian weaving
Inca geometric
designs
Terracotta tiles
Mexican paper mache
bowls, maracas, dream catchers, metal cutouts and fans

The electives program
produced some fantastic artwork. Once again our congratulations go to
our students, staff and parents who worked to create such an
impressive array of art!

We would particularly like to thank Barb
Williams and Heather Bath for their enormous efforts to organise
and coordinate the electives and the exhibition. Also, the
school thanks those talented parents who contributed
significantly by running electives and giving their support.
