On Orientation
Day the Year sixes and sevens joined together as groups and did some
activities together. We played earthball, volleyball, stilts,
parachutes and other equipment. Later on we had our lunch which was a
sausage, ice block and cordial. After, we had activities inside. The
day was great.

On the
22nd February 2002 we had an Orientation Day for the Year 6’s
and 7’s. This day was used to show us ways of working together,
cooperation, confidence and leadership. The morning activities were
held on the oval. They included volleyball, stilt walking, parachutes,
hand tennis and earthball.

One of the
activity stations on Orientation Day was stilts. Miss Lock was the
teacher and she was very nice to everyone. That was one of my favourite
stations.

At 12.00 we had
a special lunch. For lunch we had a sausage sizzle. Some of the
parents helped out to get the sausage sizzle ready. Everyone got a
sausage, orange juice and a zooper dooper. We got to choose any flavour
that we liked. People enjoyed their lunch. I’m looking forward until
next year when I’m in Grade 7.

On Friday 22nd
February it was Orientation Day and we played games till lunch. For the
rest of the day we got into our groups. I was in the Silver group. My
favourite part of the day was when my group had Volley Ball.

On Orientation
Day we did an event called geeters. On each pair of wooden planks there
was room for 4 people. In our group there were some Year Sixes and Year
Sevens. I thought it was hard to keep my feet in the elastic straps.
We had to slide 10 to 16 metres to the end and back.

Education for students in the Middle
School (Years 6 & 7) has received high priority at Happy
Valley School for a number of years now. The school
recognizes the importance of these transition years between
a student’s primary and secondary education. |
|
Throughout the
school year, there are many activities involving the older
primary students, encouraging them to display leadership,
collaboration and participation in school programmes. This
includes a focus on work education, transition to high
school and another exciting camping experience.

In 2002, our
"Middle School" is made up of two classes of Year 6 and two
classes of Year 7 students. Teachers of these classes meet
regularly to plan and programme whole group activities,
while there are many smaller group and individual programmes
that occur class by class. |

The
year begins with the Middle School Orientation Day which was
held, this year, on 22nd February. The day
incorporated group activities and "Life Be In It" games in
the morning, and self development and goal setting
activities in the afternoon. Later in the term our Middle
School students will experience an exciting week long
aquatics programme at Port Noarlunga. |

parents helping to make Orientation Day an enjoyable

|
The main
aims of Orientation Day are as follows:-
-
To
promote leadership skills
-
To
foster a sense of cooperation and team-work
-
To have
fun
-
To
encourage students to participate in a wider range of
school programmes
-
To
enable students to display leaderships skills
-
To
increase self confidence in our senior students
-
To
provide an opportunity for students, staff and parents to
interact
-
To promote values such as
honesty, respect, individual rights and responsibilities.

| |
 |
In
addition to these important goals, 2001 Middle School
Orientation Day also featured a focus on Programme
Achieve, a programme that is designed to help
students achieve success and emotional well-being.
Right: One of the themes
during the afternoon was, "I Can Make a Difference." This
helped boost self-confidence and self-esteem. Qualities most
essential in the Middle School. |
| |
|
|
It does so by helping young
people understand the relationship between thinking, feeling
and behaving. Students develop awareness of what it is they
are saying to themselves (self-talk) and how this relates to
how they feel and how they act.
Left: During the afternoon,
Middle School students were involved in many team-building
activities. |
 |
| |
|
|
Programme
Achieve helps students monitor their feeling
(emotional thermometer). How am I feeling? What am I
thinking (saying to myself) that may be causing this? Is my
self-talk helpful? (true?). The student is taught the skill
of ‘disputation’ i.e.. Where’s the evidence that say’s I am
worthless because someone won’t play with me? What can I
say to myself that is true and will help me feel better?
Expressing feelings rather than expressing anger, is a key
to success in most relationships. |

The staff and Year 6 and 7 students would like to thank the
wonderful group of parents who so generously gave of their
