Special Slide Show on World Environment Day

At Happy Valley school we have a strong environmental focus, which is reflected in our actions throughout the year.  To better reduce, recycle and reuse, we:

recycle our food scraps from all classes
have a worm-composting program for families
 propagate plants
 recycle classroom paper
have an Edible Garden project to grow vegetables organically
have water saving cisterns in our toilets
have timer switches in toilets
will save several thousand dollars in electricity costs this year

Over the past few years, on World Environment Day, we have involved the whole school in tree planting in the Panalatinga Environmental Reserve.  This year we planted acacias indigenous to this reserve.  We propagated over 400 acacias from seeds collected in the reserve by the Friends of Panalatinga Environmental Reserve.

This year we decided to plant lower down in the reserve along the creek line, in an area, which badly needed regeneration.  Planting was done in buddy classes.

Many thanks to the 15 adults and 10 children who were able to dig holes last weekend, and to the nearly 60 parents who helped with the plantings.  It was also great to have, yet again,  the help and expertise of Michael Garrod from the Onkaparinga Water Catchment Board.

A special thanks to members of the Friends of the Panalatinga Reserve who also came to dig holes last weekend and who spent World Environment Day assisting with the planting. These people included Veena and Phill Parker, Dianne Gordon, Kaye Dennert, David Lithgow, Neil Cook, Sharon Nash and Marie Szeitz. Because of your efforts our reserve will look better and have an understorey, which will encourage birds to the area.

The school thanks all involved in this great demonstration of our environmental values.  At an assembly on 6th June, Jacqui Brettig, who did a wonderful job of coordinating the event again this year, presented all classes with certificates of recognition.

At the assembly we also presented the results of a waste audit conducted at our school by Sharon Stott from Onkaparinga City Council.  Sharon talked about how we could go about reducing the waste we put into our big bin twice a week.  She invited ECO Ant to come along to the assembly to help get the message across.  Students found this very entertaining and informative.
