Active for Life is a government initiative
designed to increase the physical activity levels of children and young
people, while developing positive attitudes towards participation in
lifelong, regular physical activity.
All the classes in our school participate in a
minimum of 90 minutes of structured PE and Fitness activities each week.
Many classes average 120 minutes of active physical time each week.
These figures come from a survey of class teachers conducted last term.
While this shows that our students are active during the school day on a
regular basis, will physical activity remain an enjoyable and a
rewarding experience into their adult lives?
Last year we collated a lot of valuable data from
students and parents focussing on what students currently do at school
outside their classroom time, and what they would like the opportunity
to do if equipment or support was provided.
| This data has been collated to
give us a whole school picture of our students and their playtime
activities. Currently the most popular activities are: |
Yrs. R-2: Playing on the playground equipment
Yrs. 3-5: Playing games with friends
Yrs. 6-7: Playing on the playground equipment
|
| The extra activities that
students would like to do with equipment and support are: |
Yrs. R-2: Hopscotch, dance, skipping
Yrs. 3-5: Volleyball, dance, aerobics
Yrs. 6-7: Volleyball, cricket, swimming

The Active for Life Committee of parents,
staff and students has developed a plan based on feedback from students,
staff and parents. Some initiatives have already been implemented while
others are in the planning stages.
Tuesday dance at lunch-time with Carrie Collins
has started for all primary students. Our primary students are being
encouraged to be active through dance.

Students discuss new
sports equipment with a sales rep.
The Active for Life Committee has purchased a
range of new sports equipment, including portable soccer goals,
frisbees, portable football goals, quoits, ezy flings, hand shuttles and
agility balls. Students are able to borrow this equipment at lunch-time.
All students from Year 4-7 have completed the
UniSA MARCA- Multimedia Activity Recall for Children and Adolescents
Programme. This is a computerized activity diary where students record
their activities from the previous day. The data will be sent to UniSA
for analysis. This will tell us how active our students are, and how
their activity levels compare with students in other schools.
At Happy Valley, we are really exploring the
"Active Kids are Happy Kids" theme.
