"Come Out" is recognized as Australia's largest and most diverse youth arts festival. It is held every two years and encourages children from all South Australian schools to participate in a wide range of Arts activities during Term 1.  Schools can either take part in individual programmes or come together with other schools to participate in parades, displays and other shared activities. This year's theme was "Being Human."

Once again Happy Valley School entered into the spirit of this unique arts festival. Across the whole school, our students immersed themselves in an exploration of the positive values and virtues of being human. Some classes worked on the theme "Being Human," while others explored variations on the theme. As part of the process, each class was given five metres of coloured cotton, and challenged to construct a 2.5 metre high mannequin that clearly displayed the theme adopted by each class. Buddy classes were utilized by some groups, parents helped with others and other classes worked individually. In the weeks leading up to the launch, classes worked busily on their themes and gradually the mannequins began to take shape.

Classes begin to assemble on the school oval for the special Come Out unveiling of the class mannequins.

Principal Doug MacLean welcomes everyone to the special Come Out assembly on the school oval.

Then on Tuesday 22nd March, a special Come Out celebration was conducted on the School Oval. Many parents and friends attended the display as each class was invited to explain its theme and describe the process by which it had constructed the mannequin. Although the strong wind presented a challenge, each class raised its mannequin in a colourful and spectacular display.

The strong winds presented a special problem as the mannequins were hoisted on the school oval.

However, Groundsman Mike Lane was on hand to make sure everything stayed in the right place.

At the conclusion of the special assembly, each child was presented with an ice-block. Once again this proved very popular with the children. In the weeks following the special launch, the class mannequins were displayed along the front of the school when the weather permitted. The mannequins were also displayed in the School Hall.

Each class in turn described the process by which they constructed their mannequin and the theme the class used.

The school would like to thank everyone who contributed in any way to the outstanding success of the 2005 Come Out celebrations. Particular thanks to Groundsman Mike Lane who assisted with the mannequin display. Special thanks also to the parents who came along on the day to support the efforts of the children.

Another great day at the Happy Valley School!
