One of the busiest weeks in the school calendar is
Children's Book Week. This year, Book Week was held in Week 5 of Term 3.
It provided an excellent opportunity for students to practise reading
and literacy
skills in keeping with our school priorities.
The theme for this year's Book Week was,
Book Now!
A much anticipated feature of
Book Week was the announcement of the Australian Children's
Book of the Year Awards. These are presented annually by The
Children's Book Council of Australia. They were first awarded in 1946.
Until 1952, there was only a single award category, now there are five:
- Picture Book of the Year
- Book of the Year: Younger Readers
- Book of the Year: Older Readers
- Book of the Year: Early Childhood
- The Eve Pownall Award for Information Books
There were many fantastic class projects and
Resource Centre initiative that celebrated Book Week. Here is just a
few.Mrs.
Kakoschke's class studied "The Short and Incredibly Happy Life of
Riley" by Colin Thompson. The children made plates of food that made
them happy or photo frames of people that did the same.

Kakoschke's class
Mrs. Atherton's class redrew images
from "Creatures of the rain forest by Warren Brim.

Mr. Jones' class studied Helicopterman by Elizabeth Fensham. They
then made triangular dioramas to depict scenes from the book.

Mr. Francis' class studied "Millie and the Night Heron" by Catherine
Bateson. They made a 3D model of Millie bird-watching.

Mr. Beaton's class read the novel "Once" by Morris Gleitzman. This
story is about World War II and is quite sad. The children depicted
scenes from the story by doing crayon "scratch" drawings.

Beaton's class
Mrs. Whisson's class read "Run Hare, Run: The Story of a Drawing" by
John Winch. After reading the story the children chose another famous
painting and wrote a story about that. They then illustrated the story
by "extending" the original picture beyond its boundaries.

Although it was a busy time for
students and staff, Book Week was an outstanding success. Special thanks
to our wonderful Resource Centre staff, Judy Miller, Phyllis Carn and
Denise Lucas who organized most of the activities. Thanks also to the
staff and students who supported the occasion and made it all worth
while.
