During Week 10 of Term 1, a large group of senior students, accompanied by staff members travelled to Canberra for an amazing four day experience in our nation's capital city.

The majority of the party left school by bus at 4:00 pm on Sunday 2nd April. The bus trip, which took sixteen hours, was filled with great excitement and anticipation interspersed with a few hours of broken sleep. The remainder of the party, consisting of two students and three adults, accompanied wheelchair student Josh Robertson by plane and joined up with the main party on Monday morning in Canberra.

For the next four days, the group was immersed in all kinds of diverse experiences that stimulated and evoked a wide variety of emotions and reactions in both students and the accompanying adults. Each venue provided a special and unique learning experience that far excelled the obvious limitations of a traditional classroom setting.

The following was written by Simon Mueller, Canberra Coordinator

Our Canberra experience 2006 was a very special one. I have no doubt that the Canberra Trip will remain a highlight for the students and continue to impact positively on their learning.

All of our students need to be congratulated on their excellent attitude and behaviour for the duration of the experience. At all times they were curious, interested, asked questions, showed respect and understanding and participated fully.

Follow up discussions and work at school revolved around: structures of government, appreciation of our War Veterans and the sacrifices made, wealth distribution, artistic appreciation, the wonders of science and our nation’s fabulous sporting achievements. What a smorgasbord!

Our students were bombarded with amazing experience after amazing experience and took it all in their stride to build on their incredible understanding of their role as Australian Citizens and appreciation of our enviable way of life. All of this crammed into 4 amazing days, after 16 long but exciting bus hours! They all deserve a medal!

Thank you again to all parents for supporting this concept at Happy Valley School. I am looking forward to 2007 and another successful trip to our National Capital.
