HAPPY VALLEY GRADUATES – what should they be like?

What skills, abilities and knowledge should a student who has spent 8 years at our school be able to demonstrate?  What should they be able to think, feel and do, following the educational experiences we have provided?  Should they have high self-esteem?  Should they have high academic skills?  Should they be very physically active?  Should they work well as a member of a team?  What do you think?  What’s important to you?

Our school has four core values –  Co-operation – Learning – Communication and Striving for Excellence.  Do these values reflect the skills and abilities that we want our students to graduate with?  Staff are contemplating these questions as they plan the educational programs for next year, and into the future. School Council will also be exploring this concept.

We would like parents too, to ponder these questions with us, and to be involved in shaping the future directions of our school.  We invite parents to write or draw, on the ‘Happy Valley Graduate’ diagram included in this Newsletter, their priorities for students graduating from our school.  Send us your thoughts so that in partnership we may plan our future.

BASIC SKILLS TEST
One Test, One Day

Once again The BST results for students at Happy Valley were well above the state average.  Details will be reported at the School Council AGM on 27 November.  However, it is important that parents of Year 3 and Year 5 students keep these results in perspective – they are the results of one test on one day and relate to some aspects of literacy and numeracy.  As with any one off test, performance on the day and the style of the test can be factors, which might produce results that vary from what teachers have reported about your child’s progress.

Remember, BSTs are only indicators of students achievement and simply form part of the battery of assessment tools and techniques that teachers use throughout the year to make judgements about your child’s levels of achievement.

BORN TO LEARN
As Principals we recently had the pleasure of revisiting “life-long learning” and its implications for all of us as adults, teachers, parents, young people and children.

We know that learning will continue forever and that having a healthy self esteem and positive outlook on life and learning will further increase our opportunities for growth of the mind and of the soul.

Glenn Capelli from The True Learning Centre in Western Australia helped us reflect on whether our school is a “Thinking Learning School” with “Thinking Learning Classrooms” – a school where we as a learning community  -
  • Seek and appreciate the broader view of learning
  • Ask ourselves “How else can this be taught and learned?”
  • Observe students’ personal development and self-esteem
  • Keep conscious of our own journey of self development and esteem
  • Use all the multi - intelligences in our teaching and learning – physical, musical, logical, interpersonal, intra-personal, visual, verbal, naturalist.

He reminded us of how important and influential our role is, as teachers, parents and community members in empowering our young people and children to be lifelong learners.

He uses song to convey a message and we thought you’d appreciate this one from his book ”The Thinking Learning Classroom”. The book is available to borrow from school and his website is www.glenncapelli.come

Take a look at the person beside you
Take a look at the person you’ve been
Take a look at every one you have known
Take a look at your family and friends
Every brain and every body
Every heart that’s beating on Earth
We are unique through our contribution
We are unique, so live it and learn
.

Yes we were born to learn
And we were born to teach
As we were born to love
And we were born to breathe
We say ‘Yes’ in all that we do
In our message for me and for you.

Take a look at the local classroom
Take a look at the corporate firm
Take a look at the family household
Each a team wanting to learn
Every person, every talent
Help us find them, use them, believe
When we confirm our natural wisdom
We learn to let our spirit fly free.

We see a world of life long learning
We see a world of joy and esteem
This world we see in every person
Each of us carries the seed.

PIE Grants
Each year the Education Subcommittee applies for Parent in Education grants through the Department of Education to help us continue our parent education program.  Over the last few years, we have successfully won grants for ‘Parent Computer Skills Development’, Parent Support for Technology’, ‘Parents as Tutors’. ‘Parent Involvement in Early Intervention in Numeracy,’ ‘Parents as Publishers’, ‘Parents Supporting Boy’s Literacy’, ‘Parents Promoting Enterprise’, ‘Parents Thinking Through the Curriculum’ and ‘Parents in the Net’, gaining over $3,400 for parent education programmes.

Last week we applied for two more projects under this grants programme – ‘Through the Looking Glass – Parents looking at children’s literature’ and ‘Parents go Bush’.  Both grant applications support important programmes in our school.  The first looks at literacy and choosing good literature for children, while the second looks at further developing the Panalatinga Reserve.  Hopefully, next year, we’ll be able to offer parents two more exciting programmes that support what we are doing in the school.

Friends of the Panalatinga Environmental Reserve
are holding two terrific FREE workshops
to learn about developing the Reserve

Saturday 11 November, 1.00 – 4.00pm
Bush care techniques and seed collecting

Saturday 18 November, 1.00 – 4.00pm
Propagation and how to grow native plants

Meet at the school propagation shed at 1.00pm
Michael Garrod from the Onkaparinga Catchment Water Management Board will lead these workshops
This is a great opportunity to learn/refresh new skills.  The workshops are open to the wider community.

Please invite others to come

PARENT CLUB NEWS
Thank you to all those who have ordered the Calendars.  We have sent them off and they should be back by about Week 7 or 8 and will be distributed then.  The artwork for the calendars has been fabulous.  Well done and thanks to all the students, and a big thank you to all the teachers who kindly took the time to participate in this project, during such a hectic time.

Those people who are eagerly awaiting the slice order forms should have them by the end of the week or early next week.  You have until near the end of November to get your orders in and delivery will be around the second to last week of the term.  The slices come in plastic containers and are great to have on hand during the festive season, for those unexpected guests.

Don’t forget the Parent Club Annual General Meeting will be held next Tuesday 7 November at 9.00am in the Staff Room.  We would love to see some new faces and of course all our current members attending.  If you don’t really know what the Parent Club is all about, please come and find out.  See you there!!

A BIG THANK YOU FOR GALA DAY

What a fabulous whole school community effort we had for Gala Day.  There was lots of fun, a wonderful community spirit and we also made about $8500 profit for the school.  Events like these are as much about building school culture as they are about fundraising.

We really wish to applaud the fantastic energy, commitment and organisational skills of Georgie Goldfinch and Dianne Gordon, who were ably assisted by Chris Rogge.  Their fantastic hard work ensured that everything went so smoothly.

Our staff are to be commended for their super efforts.  The work that went into preparations was outstanding and the commitment and willingness to give, by teachers and SSOs on the day, just proves what a dedicated and community spirited team we have.

Our students were fabulous, showing skills and confidence and a willingness to help with preparations and packing up.
