Happy Valley School’s Mission And Values

Many of us have either read or heard the discussion, and in some quarters debate, surrounding State and Private schooling.  At times it appears very personal and statements that State schools promote valueless ideals, are both un-helpful and bluntly untrue.

Happy Valley School has a very proud, rich history and culture surrounding the community it serves.  For over a century it has had at its core the promotion of learning opportunities, achievement and excellence for all children of this community.  To this end it is for our community to judge our success for we will continue to strive for excellence, to achieve the very best we can with the resources we have and can access.  It is important to note that one example of achievement has been the consistently high outcomes of students attending Happy Valley School, based on state wide testing programs in literacy and numeracy in both state and like school averages.  This is demonstrated through data collected by the school and the education department and available through the annual report from the office.

To re-enforce that Happy Valley School is very clear about its purpose, role and function below is our mission, values and commitments to the community as published 2 years ago.

Our Mission

Our mission is to provide an enriching, enterprising and caring learning environment that offers the highest quality of learning for each individual student.

Our Core Values Focus on

  • Co-operation

  • Learning

  • Communication

  • Striving for Excellence

We are committed to

  • providing a diversity of learning experiences, which challenge students to achieve their personal best in a rapidly changing world.

  • providing a secure learning environment through a consistent and caring approach to managing student behaviour

  • maintaining a co-operative climate for learning which fosters pride, a sense of belonging and recognition of achievements

  • working co-operatively with colleagues, parents, students and the wider community

The full Values Statement for Happy Valley School is available from the school office or on-line at http://www.happyvalley.sa.edu.au/downloads/values_statement.pdf

REMINDERS!!

School Fees
There are a few families who have not paid their materials and service fees for this year and have not contacted the front office to make arrangements.  Please do so as soon as possible as non-payment of fees may result in the debt being passed to a debt collection agency.

Excursion Fee
The Governing Council and the Education Department have approved the policy that requires students to pay the excursion fee before they are able to attend excursions.  The costing of excursions is worked out assuming all children will attend, so the class excursion budget pays even if your child does not attend.

School Card
If you are eligible for school card and have not applied, please come to the front office for an application form.  Applications for term 1 close on 19th March, 2004.

Each year the Year 6 and 7’s go down to Port Noarlunga for Aquatics.  Some of the activities that we do are: Boogie Boarding, Surfing, Wave Skiing, Snorkelling, Fishing, Canoeing, Sail Boarding and Sailing.  This year in Year 7 I’m doing Boogie Boarding.

We have to walk a long way to where the waves are but it’s worth it.  Our instructor shows us where some rips are or might be so we stay away from them.  We swim between flags to make it easier for us to know where they are.  Last year in Year 6 I did Wave Skiing.  Our instructor took us out to the reef and past it.  We were even lucky enough to have three or five dolphins swim under and past us.  It was an amazing experience.

Aquatics is a lot of fun and it’s great to do!

By Tegan

In aquatics there is a big variety of choices to do like Wave Skiing, BodyBoarding, Surfing, Fishing, Snorkelling, Canoeing, Sailing and Wind Surfing.  We have one-hour sessions for five days.  We do our lessons down at Port Noarlunga.

I think aquatics is fun!

By Tim G.

The Year 6 and 7’s have been leaving school at 10.15 am for their aquatics down at Port Noarlunga Beach.  Aquatics is all about having a week of fun down the beach but at the same time learning to be safe around water.  They got to choose three of the activities, which are surfing, body boarding, wave skiing, snorkelling, fishing, sailing, wind surfing and canoeing.

The Year 7’s have to write a journal and draw a picture for every day describing what happened during the few hours they were there e.g. how windy, what the water was like – choppy, wavy, calm etc.), where you are, what happened etc.

In the end, it’s a fun week off school.

2004 ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
AND ANNUAL REPORT

Thank you to the parents and staff who attended the 2004 Annual General Meeting of the Happy Valley Governing Council, on Monday, 8th March.

It was a very small number of people who heard about the wonderful achievements Happy Valley School made throughout 2003 as well as taking the opportunity to hear from Peter Simmonds, Happy Valley School’s new Principal.

For those who were unable to attend and are interested his presentation, it is available on the Internet in pdf format at  http://www.happyvalley.sa.edu.au/downloads/
ps_agm2004.pdf

Julie Abroe, Governing Council Chairperson provided a very full report on the activities and achievements of Happy Valley School in 2003.  This report too is available on the Internet via the following link,

http://www.happyvalley.sa.edu.au/downloads/

The draft 2003 Annual Report is available via the web at http://www.happyvalley.sa.edu.au/downloads/

Finally we have 2 x 2 year vacancies to be filled by parents who wish to support our school through being a member of the Governing Council.  A strong, robust representative parent body is critical to the strength and future to our school.  Here is a practical way to assist in the education of your children.

The opportunity to participate in the decision-making processes that ultimately affect your child’s personal education should not be under-estimated.  You may have considered becoming a councillor, but thought that you have no skills to offer.

The most important skill you have to offer is that you are a parent wanting the best for your children.  This is the only pre-requisite that any of the current councillors brings to the table.

If you have any questions or want to know more about what is involved, then please speak to Peter Simmonds or any of the current governing council members listed previously.

CODES OF PRACTICE

To continue the promotion of values, it seems timely to remind us all that in 2002 the school and its community undertook a consultative process to develop “Codes of Practice” for the Governing Council, Parents, Staff and Students.  These were developed as part of entering into Partnerships 21 and thank you again for the feedback these groups provided to shape these important statements.

Over the next two newsletters we will publish all of these statements, starting with Governing Council and Parents, to reiterate the strength of the partnership we have will all who contribute and make the Happy Valley School community.  The Week 9 Newsletter will include Students and Staff.

The Happy Valley School acknowledges that it operates within legal requirements, the Department of Education and Children’s Services regulations and policies, the Roles and Accountabilities Statement in Partnerships 21 and industrial awards.

GOVERNING COUNCIL
The role of the Governing Council is to oversee the development of the Partnerships Plan, monitor the plan and report on its success and on the areas that need improvement

At Happy Valley School it is expected that the Governing Council will

  • Act honestly, trustworthy and confidentially, with good faith and in the best interests of the school as a whole

  • Use due care and diligence in fulfilling all functions and powers attached to the governing council role

  • Ensure that personal differences, or the interest of any associated persons do not conflict with the interests of the school

  • Ensure the learning needs of all students are paramount in decision making

  • Work collaboratively with all members of the school community

  • Speak as one  - Grievances will be resolved within the council

PARENTS
At Happy Valley School it is expected that parents will

  • Support the running of the school through involvement in committees and assisting with learning programs

  • Communicate their opinions and concerns regarding their child’s learning and other school matters to members of staff and the Governing Council

Page 4
  • Value and promote their school and the achievements of staff, students and parents

  •  Welcome new parents and encourage their contribution

  • Endeavour to understand the purpose of the school and support its values and principles

  • Participate within the school’s existing decision making structures and policies

  •  Respect the diversity and values of families across the school

WALKING BUS SERVICE IN HAPPY VALLEY AREA

This week our first Walking School Bus route began.  On Monday, six ‘passengers’ with two adult ‘drivers’, followed their bus route from Seaview Drive down to the school, arriving active and excited at 8.40am.  The Seaview Drive route will operate most mornings, travelling down to Chandlers Hill Road, along Southern Cross Drive then through the park and along Devon Court to the school.

Walking School Bus Routes will probably operate only in the mornings, and not every morning, only when there are adults to ‘drive’ the bus and students who want to use it.  Families can opt to use it whenever it suits them – as little or as often as they like.

If you live along the route of the Seaview Drive bus, and you would like your child to use the bus, contact the school or the area coordinator, Jennifer Whitehead, phone 8322 3166.

We would like to establish buses in other areas too – in the Easton Road area, the McHarg Road area and the Fraser Road area.  If you live in any of these areas and would like to register for a Walking School Bus, please contact the school or pop in and get a Registration form from the front desk.

Walking School Buses promote Having Fun, Exercising Safely, Caring for Our Environment and Creating Communities.

SCHOOL TIMES

Just a reminder that the school does not open until 8.30am.  This is to give the teachers an opportunity to prepare and get organised for the day, it is a vital time.  We would appreciate that parents make use of the Out of School Hours Care (OSHC) facilities if supervision is required before 8.30am.  The school’s timetable is as follows:

8.55am
10.40am
11.00am
12.30pm
12.40pm
1.10pm
3.15pm
School commences
Recess
Lessons recommence
Lunch
Lunch Play
Lessons recommence
School dismissal

The school lessons commence at 8.55am.  It is imperative that children are ready to commence lessons at this time and teachers do not have to “mark time” for late arrivals.  Children who are often late compromise the class routine and have an unsettled start to their own day as well as interrupting the learning of other children.

It is also important that children are collected as soon as possible after school.  Teachers are on duty until 3.30pm.  Again if you are not able to collect your child on time please make use of the OSHC facilities.  They may be contacted by phoning 8322 2411.

When children go into rooms prior to 8.55am, they are expected to organise themselves ready for the day.  This is an important (organisational) skill that we want all children to learn and we expect them to manage it by themselves.  Whilst we always welcome parents into the school and value the support they give to our educational programs, we also want the children to learn the skills of organisation and independence.

Lessons start at 8.55; children need to be quiet and settled at that time.  Unless you are staying on to hear reading or to help in the room, we request that parents make their farewells and leave the room before the 8.55 bell.

This greatly helps the children, especially the younger ones, to realise that school is about to start and that they need to be ready to listen to the teacher and settle into their morning routine.

Teachers are also very busy between 8.30 and 8.55am (even though many arrive around and before 8.00am) getting ready for the day ahead and attending to children’s needs.  It is not always possible or appropriate to discuss an issue during that time, especially when there are a lot of children around.

If you have concerns that need discussing, it is preferable to make a time to see the teacher, possibly after school.  This then allows the issue to be talked through in a much quieter environment, free from the distraction of a room full of children and the myriad of tasks that need attention before school starts.  Thank you for your support.

CHILDREN TURNING FIVE IN 2004 - 2006

If you are aware of any child/ren who will be turning five years of age between now and the beginning of 2005-6 and who have not enrolled, could you please advise the Happy Valley School office either by calling in or telephoning the School on 8381 7166.

This information will assist us in our forward planning.  Thank you for your help.

LAP

LAP is a great program, benefiting students and encouraging parents to become involved in our school.

In our school there are students who may benefit from extra support with class or subject work, they may be shy, disruptive, or just need someone to listen to them and show they care.  Others may have a particular interest or talent that needs encouragement.

LAP recognises that learning is a lifelong process.  Volunteers work with teaching staff and are encouraged to take part in training and development activities.  LAP volunteers make new friends and HAVE FUN!

Happy Valley School has had a successful program for many years.  This year we have welcomed 3 new volunteers and a volunteer returning.  BUT we still have five students who have been nominated by their teachers as possibly benefiting from LAP and not enough volunteers.  If you have been considering finding out about LAP, but haven’t got around to it, please fill in the return slip!

EDIBLE GARDEN

Autumn planting is well under way in our garden
  • Jill Varga’s year 4’s planted turnip, radish, oriental radish and peas.  The week they planted them was very hot but the class looked after the seeds well and were rewarded with the seeds sprouting in 3 days!

  • Jennifer Whitehead is again helping Sue Higgins and Jacqui Brettig.  They have planted corn and zucchini.  Their tomatoes are still producing, too.

  • Trudy Petho’s year 4’s have Mrs Hardwick to help them; they have planted corn, celery, coriander and snapdragons.

  • Mr Perry is helping in Shelley Saunders class.  They have been working very industriously!  The students have painted two tyres and planted beetroot and carrots in the middle.  Around the outside the plot will also be brightened up with pansies and alyssum.

Page 6

Our pond now has goldfish in it!  This is to help keep the algae at bay.  Now the weather is cooler the water is clearer, too.

Our core family committee are so “committed” to this garden project that the working bee to be held on the ‘really’ hot weekend wasn’t cancelled!  Thank you to Terry and Arron Bartel, Judy Hardwick, Jennifer Whitehead and Rachael McBride for being so enthusiastic.  We freshened up the soil, adding 8 bags of horse manure, decomposed lawn clippings and some soil conditioner to most plots, ready for the class to start planting.
