COME OUT        COME OUT        COME OUT

Students have been Coming Out with the Arts for the last two weeks, working on arts projects within the school, and going to performances in and around the city. Mrs Atherton and Mr Mueller's classes went to the Come Out opening and to a performance called 'Getting Physical'.

I forgot to tell you that Elder Park is somewhere next to the Festival Theatre.  The opening ceremony was pretty and I didn't like the fact that we weren't on the roll call.  We were screaming out Happy Valley, trying to get their attention but she just wouldn't listen.  We had lunch while watching the ceremony.  We were live on the radio and had to all call out COME OUT 2005.  The station we were on was Mix 102.3.  Then when the ceremony was over, we walked to the state library to watch the play "Getting Physical".  I was surprised that it was going to be ABSOLUTELY HILARIOUS!!!!!  They were doing wicked tricks like back flips and Em stood on Gazza's head.  When the show was over, everyone went "AAA-WWW".   Alex

"From here we went back to the grass and sat in some shade on the grass.  Other people came and we saw the opening of the Come Out.  People were dancing.  I saw the band.  I saw people juggling with sticks on fire and other people were doing gymnastic things and I saw fire works and I smelt the smoke of the fire.  Then we got into two lines and the teacher counted us so they know everyone was there.  Then we walked to a play.  We had to cross some roads but no one died!"                                   Cody

Next Tuesday we will be presenting and celebrating the work we have been doing, on the school oval, beginning at 2 o'clock. Our whole school community is invited to the celebration. Come Out and join in the celebrations of "Being Human", the theme for this year's Come Out student arts festival.

Every class has been involved in Come Out preparations and activities. Here are just a few of the things that have been happening

2005 ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING AND ANNUAL REPORT

The Annual General Meeting of the Happy Valley School Governing Council was held on Monday 7th March.  The evening began with presentations by students on their learning activities last year, and for the first part of this year.  With slide show presentations, information sharing and drama, the students presented their messages about the way in which they are enjoying their learning.  Thank you to the parents who attended the meeting and to the students for their very well shared presentations.

Reports from the Chairperson and Committee Convenors were presented to the meeting and the 2004 Annual Report was tabled.  Copies of the reports and the 2005 budget, which was adopted at the meeting, are available from the front office if you were unable to attend the meeting.

Elections for Governing Council were held, and all positions on the Council for this year were filled.  Thank you to retiring Councillors for your outstanding commitment, and to newly elected Councillors for wishing to be involved.  It will be an excellent year of leadership that you will share in!

AQUATICS

Our Year 6 and 7 students have been participating in their Aquatics program this week and here are their reports.

"Today was cold but the water was warm.  When we got to the boards the waves were big.  Tracey told us how to tell where a rip was, and she got us to find one.  When we got into the water it was nice and warm so everyone got in fast.  There were really good waves but hard to catch.  We got about 5 waves and somewhere we did get to the end of the shore.  It started to rain really hard but we didn't care.  My toe is fine now and it doesn’t hurt anymore."                                               Amy C

"LOCATION: Noarlunga Beach (Port) next to lots of beaches, shacks.  On the beach basically.
ACTIVITY: I'm doing sailing.  A really fun activity and if you were to do it you'd love it.
EQUIPMENT: Boat, sails, instructor, ropes, 4 people and lots of other bits and pieces like life jackets and jackets.
WEATHER & CONDITIONS: Today it was rather calm unlike yesterday on Tuesday.  But it was like always wind change, the sea was always choppy!  It was rather cold but not super, super cold!!
REPORT: Overall it was pretty cool and fast at times when the wind changes and I really like my instructor he's cool!!
FUNNY STUFF: Our instructor is really funny and makes it fun like a sport activity.
INSTRUCTOR: My instructor's name is Terry and the other lady's name is Jo (Joe)."

"I wore my wetsuit again today but when I put it on I shreaked.  It was way cold.  Yesterday I wore a 12 and 16 (because I swapped them) but today I wore a 14.  It was perfect.  This time I got one of the good hard back blue boogie boards, instead of the grey one.  It was supposed to be 22  today but I think it was a little cooler.  The water was more bluey-green today and it was far warmer.  Some of the time it was windy but it became really warm and at one point the sun was out.  The waves were HUGE!  One wave I got pushed all the way back to shore on.  But there were a few that flipped my boogie board underneath me and I hurt my stomach.  A funny thing I saw was one of the surfers did a 360  flip in the air on his board because of this major wave that pummelled him.

WALKING SCHOOL BUS

- a fun and social way for kids to keep fit and get to school safely
In an effort to ease traffic congestion around our school and improve the safety, health and fitness of students, we would like to establish several Walking School Bus routes.

Last year we established our first bus route from the Seaview Drive area, and with parent support it operated for most days of the year.

A Walking School Bus has at least one adult driver who walks along an agreed route, collecting all children (passengers) waiting at designated bus stops and walking them to school. After school, they walk back along the same route.

While there is no limit to the number of children that can be on any one bus, there will be a maximum of eight children, including toddlers, per adult. All registered passengers will be issued with an identifying tag and drivers will be trained and approved by the school.

Routes, and frequency, will be established along those roads most used by our students, depending on the level of interest shown by parents and their willingness to volunteer as drivers. The scheme will not only ease the congestion around our school grounds, but also provides a safe, social and environmentally friendly journey for our students.

We are trying to find out whether setting up walking bus routes for our school this year has your support. We would be grateful if you would complete the tear off form at the end of the newsletter and return it to school by the end of week 9.

If we have enough interest, we would like to start the Walking School Bus routes next term. The service will be free and a co-ordinator will organise parent volunteers to act as drivers.

A meeting will be held at the school once we know the level of interest in establishing bus routes this year.

HOSTING KOREAN STUDENTS

We have been approached by Hans Education Academy and the International Education Services of the Education Department to ascertain whether our school would be interested in again hosting a group of Korean students, this time for 5 weeks from the start of Term 3. Several of our previous Home-stay families have indicated an interest in hosting children again, and we would like to know if there are other families who are also interested in hosting a child in the next program. If you are interested would you please complete the return slip at the end of the newsletter and return to me at school.  Many thanks.

YEAR 3 -- 5 SWIMMING

In Week 5 our Year 3 --5 students enjoyed some beautiful weather for their swimming week at the Marion Swimming Centre.

HOSTING GERMAN STUDENT TEACHERS

Our school has been asked whether we would like to take up the opportunity of hosting a German student teacher (aged 18 -- 24 years) for the last four weeks of term three.

The students will be in South Australia to enhance their English as well as to learn about our culture.  They will observe and assist in several classes across different age groups.

They will require accommodation and meals with families but will probably wish to be independent some of the time.

If you are interested in further information please contact Barb Williams.

PRINCIPAL'S AWARDS

Congratulations to the following students who have received Principal's Awards at the last Primary Assembly, for demonstrating our school values.  They are -- Shona Mayne, Shane Martin, Dylan Lawrence, Kieran Phillips, Damien Taylor, Luke Taylor, Aaron Finan, Elise Hardwick, Dayna Cox, Jack Reynolds, Shaun Lapere, Leah Wright, Nicole Szelag and Deni Varnhagen.

AMELIA'S GOT THE BEAT!

Congratulations to Amelia Jutilane-Maynard who has been selected as a percussionist in one of the Festival of Music Primary School orchestras.  She will perform in the orchestra for several performances in the Festival Theatre in September.  Fantastic news!  Amelia.

"Understanding the role of power in relationships helps us to identify harmful behaviours and to develop a SHARED approach to these issues"
(Website of Friendly Schools and Families -- see end of article)

This week Doug MacLean and Barb Williams attended a day conference organised by the National Coalition Against Bullying -- an initiative of the Alannah and Madeline Foundation.

Speakers included psychologist, Evelyn Field, author of Australian best seller "Bully Busting" (Finch 1999), Dr Donna Cross, Researcher and Professor at the School of Nursing and Public Health, Edith Cowan University, WA and Dr Helen McGrath Author and Education Psychologist.  Their strong message was that bullying in schools and in the general work place can be reduced.  The issue is a shared responsibility. They discussed the need to address the role and education of 'bystanders' as well as the bullies and their targets, and they provided us with useful strategies and introduction to programs for school implementation.

This was an extremely beneficial day that we will share with students, staff and the school community.

We are also involved in the implementation of the National Safe Schools Framework, a Federal Government initiative to be focused upon this year.  Barb will attend an initial session of introduction to the Framework this week also.

EARLY ARRIVAL AT SCHOOL

Just a reminder that students are not to arrive at school before 8.30am, unless they are in Before School Care.  This is a very important issue as staff are on duty only after 8.30 and therefore students are not supervised if they do arrive early.  Any students who do arrive before this time must stay in the area next to the canteen and are not to go into the playground areas.

2006 IGNITE SECONDARY
PROGRAM FOR GIFTED AND
TALENTED STUDENTS

Parents of students in years 6 and 7 are reminded to read the BROCHURE and EXPRESSION OF INTEREST form sent home earlier this week.  The form is due on Thursday 24th March and assessment sessions will be held on Saturday 9th April.

If you did not receive any of the above, see Lorraine in the front office.

KINDERGARTEN CAR PARK

The Chandlers Hill Kindergarten (across the road) now has a Friday afternoon Playgroup from 3.00pm.  Please do not use their car park during this time -- it is for the use of the playgroup parents and their very young children.
Thank you for your cooperation.

Staff of the Kindergarten.

PARKING IN GREENBRIAR
AVENUE

The Onkaparinga Council parking inspector has been patrolling the drop-off areas in Greenbrier Avenue and has warned a number of drivers for parking during the drop-off only times. We have been warned that the inspector will soon begin fining drivers who park and ignore the signs, which clearly show that it is a drop-off area only at peak times. The fine for breaching the parking restrictions is $35!

EDIBLE GARDEN

Our working bee was very successful.  Although attendance was small, we achieved what we set out to do in record time!  A huge thank you to Michelle, Brendon, Daniel and Josh Rowe, Judy

Hardwick (and her husband, Ian, for the much appreciated coffee!) and Jennifer Whitehead.  The Rowe boys worked like troopers to rake up the leaves while us others cleaned out and remulched and composted each plot, started our compost bin for this year as well as a general rubbish removal.

Mrs Nicholson's Plot

Michelle Rowe is helping the students in Carmel's class with their plot.  On Tuesday Daniel R, Kane, Blake, Michaela and Taylah planted spring onions, carrots, broccoli and sugar snap peas.  They have strung string with alfoil tied on across their plot to keep the birds out.

SPORT NEWS

FOOTBALL
Once again football season is approaching quickly.  All players will be receiving their registration form and payment form.  On receiving the registration forms and payment forms, payments need to be made by the 14th April to Andrea at the bookroom window Tuesday until Friday.

Can all parents make sure that all the children have read the code of behaviour?  If children do misbehave at training or at the games, they will not play for that day and if it continues they will be asked to miss games.

The first round for all grades in on the 7th May.

We are looking for more Yr.2/3 players.  Parents are advised that at this grade the rules are modified -- there is not tackling and no bumping.  It is all about the 2/3's learning the skills of football.  If a child who is 7 turns 8 during the year 2005, the child can play football for the Yr. 2/3.  This has been approved by the SANFL.

Training for Years 2/3 and 4/5 begins on Wednesday 30th March at 3.30pm.  Yrs. 6/7 will be advised.

If you have not put your child's name down to play football this year please don't hesitate to contact me on 8322 3531 or 0407 798 930 or if you have any other questions.  Look out for more information as the season gets closer.

Simon Brandenburg -- Football Coordinator
