MINIMISING THE HARM, MAXIMISING THE IMPACT

This year Australia celebrates the 20th anniversary of harm minimisation as the foundation of drugs policy in our country.  Harm minimisation has been the guiding principle of the National Drug Strategy since 1985 and policies and programs built upon it have saved hundreds of lives and helped to minimise the impact of alcohol and other drug use on individuals, families and the Australian community.  Key successes include:

  • the Northern Territory's Living with Alcohol program, which resulted in 129 lives being saved, 2,100 hospital admissions being prevented and associated cost saving of $124 million.

  • the National Tobacco Campaign.  During its first 6 months of operation (in 1997) the campaign was estimated to have prevented 922 premature deaths and averted $24 million in health expenditure.

  • arrests for drug offences have declined 24% since 1995-96 and arrests for cannabis offences have declined by 30% in this time.

  • the 10 year investment of $150 million into Australia's needle and syringe program, saving an estimated $2.4 - $7.7 billion in health care costs.

Dr Neal Blewett, President of the Alcohol and other Drug Council of Australia (ADCA), stated that "Harm minimisation does not condone drug use;  it recognises abstinence as a valid outcome whilst focusing on and addressing the harmful consequences of alcohol and other drug use.  The principle is a pragmatic and humane approach to alcohol and other drug issues."  He went on to say that "harm minimisation does not make value judgements.  Rather as a policy it focuses on the harms caused by alcohol and other drug use, with the goal of fewer people being harmed through that use."

Harm minimisation, known as the three pillars approach, recognises that a comprehensive mix of strategies will offer the best option for addressing and preventing alcohol and other drug-related harm.  The three pillars are:

  • Supply reduction: this includes restricting alcohol sales to people over the age of 18; border control for the importation and trafficking of heroin.

  • Demand reduction: including information and education campaigns to delay the uptake of alcohol and other drugs by young people; price disincentives on cigarettes; and treatment programs for alcohol and other drug dependency.

  • Harm reduction: such as selling only low alcohol beer at sporting events; providing clean needles and syringes to injecting drug users; educating drinkers on standard drinks measurements.

CAN I STEER MY CHILD AWAY FROM THE HARMFUL USE OF DRUGS?

How to Drug Proof your Kids

Parents CAN exert influence and implement strategies that make their children less vulnerable to involvement with drugs but they need to be informed, equipped and empowered.

We are looking forward to offering this course, run by Ucount Support Services, to parents in line with our Drug Strategy Program this year.

Watch future newsletters for more details.

The Governing Council has approved our first Pupil Free Day for 2005.  It will be in Week 7, on Friday June 17th. Students do not come to school on this day.

The day will be used for staff to take part in Training and Development in the area of Literacy, which is one of our school priorities for 2005.
Other dates for your calendar as approved by Governing Council.

School Closure Day -- Tuesday September 6th (Show Day to coincide with Aberfoyle Park High School)

Pupil Free Day -- Monday October 24th -- To be used for school review and planning.

KOREAN STUDENTS

Our next group of Korean students will arrive on Sunday July 24th, for the start of Term 3.  Many thanks to those parents who have agreed to have a Korean student for the 5-week stay, most for a second time.

The Home-stay program has requested that we have 10 students this time, so we are looking for any other families who would be interested in hosting a child for 5 weeks. Families who do host a student are financially reimbursed for their willingness to have a child stay with them.  The host families were all very positive about the last Home-stay experience.

If you are at all interested please phone Judy Davies at the school. Many thanks.

WAKAKIRRI EXCITEMENT BUILDS

Under the leadership of Carol Atherton and Trudie Petho, forty nine Year 3, 4 and 5 students have begun preparing for the school’s first ever involvement in the Wakakirri performance competition.  Wakakirri means 'story dance'. The students create a story set to music and through dance, they tell their story to the audience, all in seven minutes. The students have created their story and now they are working on their dance movements, finding a suitable routine to present their story. A lot of hard work has still to be done before the competition in August, but enthusiasm is very high.

Parents have volunteered to help Carol and Trudie prepare the students, but they still need someone to manage the lighting for the performance.  If you have skills, or even just an interest in stage lighting, please contact Carol or Trudie.

PARENTS AS PARTNERS

Many thanks to the parents who replied to the offer of 5 workshops on children's learning.  Unfortunately there were not enough responses to be able to run the course, so we have decided to postpone it.  Several people have asked whether it would be possible to do the program next term, so I will offer it again in Term 3.  More information will be sent home later.  Judy Davies

BUDDY CLASSES AT WORK

The school has a strong peer support program in place through the buddy class arrangements. Each older class is paired up with a younger class and they work together on a wide range of activities. Margaret Neemann and Carol Atherton's classes are buddied up and they worked together this week with the older students helping the younger Reception students with their computer work.

CONGRATULATIONS NADIA

Last Saturday evening I had the pleasure of attending the Metropolitan Theatre Company performance of the Musical 'Fiddler on the Roof' in the Arts Theatre.

Nadia Porter, a year 7 Happy Valley student, created a strong presence on stage in her role as Bielke.  She played the character of  one of the daughters of  Golde and  Tevy and  looked  very

much at home singing, dancing and acting. Congratulations Nadia on a fine performance and may there be many more to come!

WETLANDS

OUT AND ABOUT WITH YEAR 6 & 7 CLASSES

I interviewed several two year 7 students regarding their recent excursion.

Where did you go?
We went to the Urrbrae Wetlands at Fullarton.

How was the day organised?
It was very well organised.  The year 7s left first thing in the morning and returned in time for lunch. The year 6s went in the afternoon. Doc, our tour guide, gave us a lot of assistance with our studies and we used very valuable microscopes to look at the mini-beasts and a Power Point presentation helped us to recognise the animals.  The school has purchased the Powerpoint for everyone's use.

What are some things that you learnt?
We learnt about the kind of conditions that different beasts need to survive.  We also discovered, to our amazement, that each glass dish contained thousands of living things.

What were some new experiences that you undertook?
Using equipment of that standard was amazing.  We had so much fun.

How has this excursion helped you with your learning in the classroom?
Now that the school has purchased the Powerpoint we can refer to it during Jason Project research time.  I think it helped us realise how much there is to save in the world and how many things there are around that we take for granted or don't even know that they are there.

Thanks to Nazanin and Louise for their reflections of this excursion.

Despite the unseasonable weather, the garden is starting to look quite green and healthy!  Mrs. Whisson's class and Mr. Graham's class have activities Wednesday afternoon, one of them is gardening.  Mrs. Whitehead has been helping the class get started; they have planted red and white cabbage, snow peas, onions, rocket and strawberries.

Mrs. Rowe has been very busy helping both Mrs. Nicholson's and Mrs. Neemann's classes put together posters of the teachers so everyone knows which plot belongs to whom!

Mrs. Saunder's class has had Mr. Perry help them plant spinach, lettuce and beans.

Mr. Mueller's class have had Mrs. Hardwick help them plant lettuce, carrots and stock.

STUDENT INSURANCE

SAASSO is currently in negotiations with EBM Insurance Brokers from Queensland regarding student personal accident cover for students.  SAASSO anticipate that the cover will be individual rather than whole of school at very competitive rates.

Parents considering personal student accident insurance should hold back on contacting EBM Insurance directly until SAASSO is able to finalise its negotiations with EBM, as SAASSO believes that the bulk cover may be most competitive for you.
