As part of Reconciliation Awareness and Celebrations, the Junior Primary Assembly this week focused on activities around our learning in this area. The Kaurna Welcome opened the assembly. Some of Mrs Higgins' students explained to me what happened next. We made and showed the Aboriginal flag, which is black for the sky at the top, red for the Earth at the bottom and a yellow circle for the sun in the middle. We sang the song "The Rainbow Snake" and everyone joined in well in the chorus. Some year seven girls sang the song "We Are One". Mrs Nicholson's class brought an Aboriginal dot painting to show and explain to us. There were three emus in the picture. Mrs Neemann's and Mrs Saunders' classes showed us some paintings that they had made and Mrs Bailey's class shared an Aboriginal Dreaming story. In our classroom we have made and displayed a banner to with the letters reconciliation on it.
Nadia,
Kristi and Louise (us) went to Colonnades to sing at a Reconciliation
Concert outside of the Noarlunga Theatre on Wednesday the 1st
of June. We sang our version of "We Are One" and if you want to hear it we
will be singing it at Music Night. Big thanks to Nadia's Nan Iris for
driving us there and back and getting us some ice cream at Wendy's. Also
thanks to Miss Williams for organising for us to go there, the face
painting lady for a wonderful job, the balloon lady for a gorgeous
elephant, pig and horse and a lady named Kesha for organising the actual
concert. We really enjoyed going to the Reconciliation Concert. |

A reminder that the school will be closed for students on Friday 17th June while staff participate in a Literacy training and development day. Out of Hours Care is available but parents must make a booking.
Student reports will go home tomorrow. Please make some time to discuss the report with your child. Parent/Student/Teacher Interviews are being held next week, and in some cases the week after. Please take advantage of this opportunity to meet with your child's teacher to discuss progress this year.
There are a small number of families who have not paid the 2005 school fees and charges set by the Governing Council and have not entered an agreement to pay by instalments. The Governing Council has endorsed the use of debt collectors to recover outstanding materials and services charges. We have tried hard to avoid this but in fairness to all those who do pay their fees, we feel that this course of action needs to be taken, particularly when agreements are not met and statements are not responded to. The Education Department has authorised the use of debt collection agencies for the collection of school charges for all amounts outstanding at the end of term 2 of the school year. Happy Valley School will be passing all outstanding amounts to a collection agency if an agreement has not been undertaken (in writing) and adhered to. Please contact Andrea Roberts if you have any questions about the fees/payments.
GUEST
SPEAKER RECOUNTS She came to teach us about newspapers and help us learn for the project that we are doing. She also showed us some pictures of when newspapers were made. She came at 10.00am to talk to us. When she left it was 11.00am and we then had to have recess. Martina also showed us some old papers. First newspapers were one big sheet called a Tabloid and it didn't have any pictures on them. For one coloured page of the newspapers it costs $11,118.00. She said that papers in the old days had to be made by people using a letter stamp and they had to write all the words backwards. By Alexandra W. -- (Mr Mueller -- Yr.5) |
On Friday the 13th May Martina Simos came to visit our class. Martina came from The Advertiser and she does the Education section. I believe she did a good job of speaking. Martina came at 10.00-11.00, she said that The Advertiser cost $1.00 and the Sunday Mail cost $1.60. She told us that one colour page cost $11,118. She told us that "news" stood for North, East, West, South. Martina talked all about the history of the Advertiser. One of the reasons she came was to help us with our projects. Another reason was to help us learn more. When she told us about history she said that a while ago people would put all the letters in the computer and send it off and if the editor didn't like it they would send it back! There's a Metropolitan edition and a Country edition. On the front page there is always a strap. She also said the circulation is about 200,000. By Aaron F -- (Mr Mueller -- Yr.5) The guest speaker was Martina Simos from The Advertiser. She talked about the newspaper and how she managed the education. She arrived at 10.00am and talked until about 11.00am. she told us that The Advertiser costs $1.00 to buy and the Sunday Mail is about $1.60 to buy. We talked about the education page and what things she helped with in the class. She showed us a picture of the old Advertiser building. She explained the word NEWS stands for North, East, West and South. The full-page colour advertising costs $11,118 and they called the newspaper The Advertiser because it was originally just for advertising. The newspaper we were given was dated Friday 13th May 2005 so it was very new because it was today's paper. Martina visited us on Friday 13th May 2005. Martina came to help us with our news page study. She showed us how the newspaper is set out. By Kristi G -- (S.Mueller --Yr.5)

KOREAN STUDENTS |
A last
request!
The
Home-stay program has requested that we have 10 students for the next
visit. There has been a change in the arrival date for the Korean
students. They will now arrive on July 30th and stay for only
4 weeks
We are still looking for any other families who would be interested in hosting a child for 4 weeks. Families who do host a student are financially reimbursed (at a weekly rate), for their willingness to have a child stay with them. The host families were all very positive about the last Home-stay experience.
If you are at all interested please phone Judy Davies at the school. Many thanks.

ECOLIVING EXPO |
On Friday of this week groups of students from our school will be information guides at the EcoLiving Expo at the Wayville Showgrounds. They will lead visitors through our school's display giving explanations and answering questions. The display features the environmental programs at our school -- the Panalatinga Reserve Study Trail, the Propagation Area, the Edible Garden, the Waste Paper and Food Scraps Recycling programs and the Wetlands Area. The Expo is timed to coincide with World Environment Day on Sunday and is a showcase of environmentally friendly programs and products. Our school was invited to participate because of the number of programs our students are involved in.
If you are in the Wayville area between 10.00 am and 5.00 pm on Friday, pop in to the Ridley Pavilion and see our display and meet the students.

FRIENDS OF PANALATINGA |
For those not familiar with the work of this group it is a dedicated band of workers who meet most months to do various jobs around the Panalatinga Reserve next to the school. Activities include weeding, checking on previous plantings, and maintenance of previous work. It's a rewarding experience working with this crew who have seen the reserve develop over the years from a weed infested inaccessible stretch of creek to a pleasant and very important part of the local natural environment.
The work benefits everyone and gives our students a valuable living classroom.
Please consider joining us for working bees. We meet at the propagation shed on the oval at 1.30, and usually finish by 4.30pm, weather or work needs determining our finish. Our next Working Bee is planned June 4th. We will be continuing with weeding and maintenance of plantings.
Page 4
You will be very welcome as the more hands, the more we achieve.
Last year there was a most successful, if very wet, planting of hundreds of plants by our students. A huge number have thrived which is a credit to the group.
This year a further planting was planned for June but with this drought, the ground is just not ready, so we have postponed it to August 5th. The next day Saturday August 6th will be a working bee to tidy up and check on the plants. Maybe you would like to come to help either on the school planting day or on the follow up day to see what we have achieved.
We really look forward to more families enjoying this important work together. It's not all hard work, with lots of laughing along the way.
Thank you, Helen Whisson

EARLY YEARS LITERACY PROGRAM |
On Monday May 30th the teachers of students from Reception to Year 3 plus the Leadership Team took part in a Core Training Day for this program that is an initiative of the State Government. It aims to provide training in Literacy teaching for teachers across the State. Various aspects of Literacy were presented, including the importance of looking at Multi-Literacies meaning that Electronic and Visual Literacy need to be strongly addressed along with the more traditional modes of print.
For example can children not only have the appropriate decoding skills when reading or viewing but show that they have comprehension and can apply the knowledge gained from a particular text or image? The value of a program rich in Oral Language was also emphasised. Over the next three years further training will be available to assist in the establishment of consistency in Literacy teaching across South Australia.

SAASSO CONFERENCE |
Two Governing Council members and myself attended the SAASSO Conference on Friday night and Saturday morning last weekend at St. Francis Winery. They had a variety of speakers throughout the conference but one speaker really made an impact on all of us as we heard her talk.
The speaker was Lyndall Horton-James and on Friday the title of her speech was "Only Playing, Miss". How intriguing this title was. She spoke about a girl who had been teased, harassed over four years and the climax of the actions of the constant bullying this poor girl received. She explained that she was called to this school and put strategies in place that made the bullies change their ways. As I listened to this story I felt it wouldn't have a good ending but it does, which is a positive.
The next day she spoke again about Bullying as being everyone's problem. I now have some strategies that I feel I can utilize within my own family and they can pass on to friends and we can hopefully stop our children from being bullied.
I was taken aback by the statistics she gave us, which I would like to share with you.
54% of Year 7 children around Australia do not feel safe at school.
16% of children report being bullied every day
44% of these are teased
21% rumours are spread about them
14.5% are excluded from joining in
12.5% are hurt or threatened
This is very alarming to think this is happening everywhere. What can we do?
Don't let the victims of bullies suffer in silence, don't watch someone being bullied, stand by the victim and support them so the bully doesn't have an audience.
I received a copy of the bullying fact file that I will give to the school if anyone would like to have a copy. I will also share some of the strategies with Governing Council that we can pass on within our school and the broader community.
I learnt that YES we can make a difference, one by one.

OUT AND ABOUT WITH THE |
Our Come Out Excursion
On the
18th of May Mr Graham's and Mrs Whisson's classes went on an
excursion. The two classes went to the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and
the Art Gallery. We went to the Orchestra first. They played lots of
different music that I had never heard before. My favourite part of the
music was "Bugs Bunny Looney Toons". We each got a special bag with notes
and other things as well. Then we had our lunch at the plaza near the
museum. Next to it was the Art Gallery. My favourite painting was the one
with all of the fish on it. It was fabulous. My favourite sculpture was
the lady holding the basket. We had to answer questions as well. We all
had groups. My parent was Phil Smallwood. Thr kids in my group were
Eden, Ashleigh, Callie, Dylan L, Ben Jesse and myself. We boarded the bus
at 2:15pm. It felt like it took longer going back than coming here. We
got back to school at 3:15pm. I like the fact that we went with two
classes not just one class. My favourite place was the Art Gallery.

Football Success
Michael Eddy, a Year 7 student at our school, has won selection in the
Southern District SAPSASA Football team. The team will
Page 5
compete in the Inter Districts Football Carnival later in the term. Congratulations on your achievement Michael.
SAPSSA netball is over for another year. Both the boys and girls played very well, but were outclassed on the day. Thank you very much to Carol Mitic for umpiring the girls (in the rain!) and to Faye White for umpiring the boys. Both groups of students were complimented by the other school on their performance and in particular, their good attitude. Well done!
Saturday morning netball is back on track at Happy Valley School after many years. We have a mix of ages and abilities playing. Because we have year 7's playing, we have to play in a year 7 competitions. This seemed a bit daunting in the beginning but the girls have been coping very well. Every girl has improved on her own performance in each game and the team spirit is very supportive. Parental support is quite amazing; from Jennifer Whitehead and Fay White umpiring on Saturday morning, Deb Taylor putting new elastic on two sets of bibs, Fay White and Alison Stark taking groups at training and all parents working together Saturday mornings to take subs, score, time and transport. Wow! What a great team we all make!!
