HAPPY VALLEY WINS ENVIRONMENTAL AWARD!

Congratulations to the 'Friends of Panalatinga Reserve'

During a ceremony at the City of Onkaparinga two weeks ago, parents Kaye Dennert and Marie Szeitz were presented with a 2005 Environmental Award for the work that the school has done in the Panalatinga Reserve. Kaye and Marie represented the 'Friends of Panalatinga Reserve', a group of interested school families and teachers, whose mission is to protect and restore the reserve to its natural state.  The families who have been involved are the Dennert, Szeitz, Nash, Gordon, Richardson, Lithgow, Hamilton, Barnfield, Perry, Eddy and Tregenza families.

The reserve, which is on the southern boundary of the school, is a very special piece of natural bushland, which has become very rare in this area. The group collects seeds from the native species in the reserve and propagates them in the school's propagating area. When the seedlings are ready, they are planted out into the reserve to maintain and strengthen the species native to this area.

The upcoming events in the reserve are Years 3, 4 and 5 planting on Friday 5th August and checking the plantings on Saturday 6th August.  The Friends group would appreciate ANY additional help on Saturday September 17th and Saturday November 5th when they are hand pulling the invasive weeds of the area, three cornered Garlic, Freezia and Sparaxis.  This will be very time consuming but they need to make a concerted effort before they take over the area completely.

Saturday Working Bees are from 1.30 to 4.00pm or whenever you can make it!  The group meet at the Propagation shed.

The reserve is an extremely valuable teaching resource for teachers and students, because of the plants that grow there, the bird life, and the wetland area that develops when the creek in the bottom of the reserve flows. It gives students a very real appreciation of the need to care for their environment.

We are proud of the 'Friends of Panalatinga Reserve', the award they have won, and the excellent work that they are doing to preserve and develop this piece of natural history right here in our community. The group is always keen to recruit new members, so if you wish to contribute to the work and help develop an appreciation for conservation in your child, contact the school on 8381 7166 for more information.

For those wishing to learn to recognise the diverse flora of the area, Caroline Door, a Catchment Care Officer, will be running a workshop on either 22nd or 29th October.

QUIZ NIGHT Can You Help Please?

Our Quiz Night will be next Saturday.  Many thanks to all those who have booked tables for the evening.

Text Box: We still need donations of bottles or jars for one of our "Fun" activities for the night.  They could be bottles of anything -- wine, ice cream topping, to sauce, or jars of produce such as jam, or even novelties.

Please bring your donation to the front office, early next week, so that the committee can get them ready for the night.

Many thanks -- we really need your help!

ECO LIVING EXPO

On Friday 3rd June the school participated in the Ecoliving Expo at the Wayville Showgrounds. Parents and students established a display focussing on all the environmental projects that the school is involved in -- the Panalatinga Reserve, the propagation area, the paper and food scraps recycling programs, the edible garden and the wetland area. The photographic and video display was managed by groups of students throughout the day, who acted as information guides for visitors to our display. Our presentation received a lot of favourable comment and through it we were able to make contacts with a number of others who are involved in conservation and environmental education.

Thank you to the parents who were involved with the display and transporting students -- Judy Hardwick, Kaye Dennert, Judy Tester, Gina and Tim Ray-Zwar, Marie Szeitz and Janet Veljkovic.   Well done to all the students who acted as guides and information givers at the display, you were great ambassadors for the school.

Special thanks to Wendy Nicolle who was first approached to involve our school and coordinated the whole project.  Excellent work Wendy!

Our information guides at the Expo display -- Lachlan, Liam, Thomas, Stuart, Courtney, Elise and Rebecca.

MUSIC NIGHT

On Tuesday evening approximately fifty students performed at our first Music Night for 2005.  It was pleasing to see the students' confidence and skills developing as they sang and played to an appreciative audience.

Violin and recorder students played in groups, keyboard students performed individually and an aspiring band of three year five students entertained us with a 12 Bar Blues and a composition by one of the students.  During the evening two pieces played were composed by the students themselves showing a great deal of creativity. The other was a piano solo.

The Choir sang two brackets with soloists having a last opportunity to sing before their auditions on Wednesday.

A guitar solo, vocal trio and percussion presentation of a variety of drumming rhythms completed a varied program.  Well done to all students for your involvement and for your excellent audience manners.

PRIMARY SCHOOLS STRINGS WORKSHOP

On Wednesday the 15th of June, Savannah, April and I attended a Strings Workshop at Christies Beach Primary School.  The teachers were Sandy, Mrs Eime, Mr O’Donnell, Mr Russell and Mrs Fletcher.  It was from 9.00am to 12.30pm.

The pieces we played were; Andante, Turn Again Whittington, Grace, Tango, Morning and Hot Stacatto Rock.  Mr Russell taught a mystery piece and it was jazzy and fun.

I have been playing the violin since Year 2.  The whole experience for the third time was fantastic!

INTERVIEWS

Thank you to all parents who made time to come to our interviews over the last weeks. There was an overwhelming response, with most teachers reporting that they have met with all or almost all parents in their class. Again, thank you for making the time to come and discuss your child's progress -- it is really important that we work together in supporting your child's/ children's learning.

NEWS ON JOSH ROBERTSON

We have had news that Josh will be discharged from hospital in the next few days.  At this stage, we are planning for him to return to school on Thursday June 30th.  Josh will be in his intended class, with Mark Inglis. Initially he will stay for part of the school day. We are planning to provide some sessions for students across the school to learn about disability awareness with a teacher from the Outreach Teaching Service, who provides such programs.

We will also be making opportunities for students across the Year 6 and 7 classes to talk about disabilities with staff from Novita.

PURCHASING EXTRA INTERNET DOWNLOADS

Our school's Internet is now under the new EduConnect system. This is a much faster and more comprehensive system but with its speed of access it is also easy for students to quickly accumulate sizeable downloads.

To give all the chance to do the schoolwork needed we have set each student a monthly quota for his or her Internet downloads. We all understand how valuable and important the Internet can be, but the school does need to keep the cost at a fair and reasonable level. We are achieving this by setting monthly download quotas. Once a student has exceeded their quota they cannot access the Internet until the following month.

We believe this monthly quota will be more than enough for students to complete their schoolwork. Our message is to be a careful and smart Internet user, to monitor any usage and to only download topics set by the teacher. Parents and students need to be aware that Internet access while at OSHC is also debited to the student's monthly Internet account.

There is an option to buy some extra Internet usage at the bookroom. This may apply to some older students who wish to do a special or more detailed project and use up their allocation or Internet uses at OSHC. In this case they may wish to see Mrs. Roberts before school and buy $1, $2 or $5 worth of Internet downloads. This extra 'time' will be in addition to the usual quota and will remain valid, if not used up, until the end of the school year.

$1 will buy 12.5 Mb of downloads
$2 will buy 25.0 Mb of downloads
$5 will buy 62.5 Mb of downloads

Our message is to be a clever Internet user. Only search what you need. Think carefully about what you download. By being a clever user, students will not need to purchase extra downloads

THE DROUGHT HAS BROKEN

The Happy Valley School weather station is pleased to announce that THE DROUGHT HAS BROKEN!  60mm of rain has been recorded by chief meteorologist, Mr Jones!

Every day Mr Jones reads and records the indoor and outdoor temperatures, rainfall, wind velocity and direction from the equipment that was installed several years ago.

All of this information is accessible to students on the school's Intranet where there is a "go to" button for students to check each day's update.

A Happy Valley weather report will go to Channel Nine on 29th June to be broadcast by Keith Martyn at 6:25pm in the weather report.  So be watching!

EDIBLE GARDEN

Mrs Rowe has been busy helping with the Edible Garden in both Mrs Nicholson's and Mrs Neemann's classes.  The students in Mrs Neemann's class sampled the peas from their plot while Mrs Nicholson's class went further and cooked.

Mrs Rowe helped them make a macaroni cheese with broccoli and peas.  The dish was a 'hit', and the children can't wait until next time they cook with produce from their garden.

SOUTHERN VALLEY SAPSASA CROSS COUNTRY

On June 1st our school's cross-country team competed in an event at Sturt Gorge, directly behind the Flagstaff Hill Primary School.  Students ran either 2 or 3 kilometres depending on their age, on a very challenging course.

Each of our 10 runners competed with distinction and special congratulations must go to Leah Wright for winning the 11 year old girl's event, Ben Richardson and Kieran Clarke for placing second in their events and to Alexandra Wilson for her third place in the 10 year old girl's event.

Thank-you to the mums and grandparents who cheered on all of the runners and to those who provided transport to and from Flagstaff Hill.
