On Friday 5th August the year 3,4 & 5 classes were involved in Tree Planting on behalf of the school. The endemic seedlings planted in the Panalatinga Reserve, adjacent to the school, were grown in our propagation shed from seeds planted by students last year. The activity was co-ordinated in the school by Helen Whisson for the Friends of Panalatinga. Wendy, Bob and Carolyn, from Onkaparinga Council, and Friends of Panalatinga, demonstrated to each class how to correctly remove a seedling from its pot and plant it into the ground. They also discussed the other flora and fauna in the reserve and how each part of nature interacts with each other part. I spoke with a group of students from Mrs Whisson's class and here is what they had to say about the activity: Casey said, "We needed to plant the seedlings near the edges of the creek so that the roots could stop the soil from falling into the creek and blocking it." Chloee told me that we've planted the plants to clean the water and to make more oxygen in the environment. Braden said, "I planted a plant with Luke. We pulled parts of the roots apart a little bit to make it easier for the plant to grow." Lerien said, "I planted with Chloee a sticky daisy bush at the creek where some of it has crumbled into the creek bed. Our plant will help to save some animals' habitats." The group agreed that we should plants lots of trees for animals to live in and under and so that they can hide from predators. Trees are also important for birds to feed from. We need plants in the reserve so that it doesn’t become a desert with no plants. I think that this group learnt a lot from their outdoor classroom. Barb Williams

MONET ART EXHIBITION |
Last Thursday morning parents and friends of Sue Higgins' class were treated to a very special visit to Monet's Garden. Through their artwork, their written work and their singing, the Year 2 students showed their guests how Monet lived and worked, and how he created his very special garden. He then painted it and its famous bridge many times. The students really enjoyed learning about this famous artist and sharing their knowledge with their visitors. One of the lessons Sue wanted everyone at her class presentation to understand, including the children, was to have a dream to aim for and to one day try and make it come true.

STUDENT SAFETY & WELLBEING |
Occasionally we are required to contact parents and/or caregivers when a child becomes ill or has a mishap at school. It is therefore extremely important that we have up to date information on our database.
Please phone or call in and speak to Denise or Lorraine and if necessary up date your phone numbers, address or contact information in the event of an emergency.
|
LITERACY AND NUMERACY TESTS |
All Year 3, 5, and 7 students participated in the LaN tests yesterday and today. While there were some nervous moments, everyone survived. The results of the tests will be sent home to parents in October.

PEDAL PRIX |
On the first Sunday of term, our two Pedal Prix teams competed in the 6 Hour Race at Victoria Park. Our two vehicles performed very well, competing right through to the end of the race. The Valley Viper, which is the Year 7 vehicle, completed 69 laps with a fastest lap of 3 minutes 52.8 seconds and finished 28th out of 51 entries in their category. The Valley Vortex, which is the Year 6 vehicle also competed in the primary school’s category, completed 57 laps, finished 43rd out of 51 entries with a fastest lap of 4 minutes 30.01 seconds.
Congratulations to both teams for competing so well and to the Pedal Prix Committee for supporting our teams' entries. The big race is only five weeks away on 17th September at Murray Bridge.

CHOIR TICKETS |
Our choir will be singing at the Festival theatre on the evening of Thursday September 22nd. The whole school community is invited to attend the performance, not just the families of the students involved. This is a great opportunity for students, particularly those in year 4 who may be thinking about joining the choir next year, to experience this wonderful event. Tickets are $21 each. Please see Barb Williams if you are interested.

ROAD SAFETY |
Recently we have had several reports of car drivers not following the road crossing procedures. These have been reported to the police. If you see an incident please report it to Denise in the Front Office and to the traffic monitors if they are in attendance at the time.
There have also been reports of students crossing the road at inappropriate places. Please ensure that you and your children

use the crossing and emphasise in your family conversations the need for safety on the roads. Wet weather conditions make visibility more difficult and so it is important to exercise special care at these times.

Happy Valley Football
It has
been a great season for Football; plenty of wins and a few losses. Only
two games remaining. It has been good to see some parents helping out
when the games are played at Happy Valley, but its still seems that the
same parents are in the canteen. These parents would like to watch their
child play as well. This Saturday I will need parents to help out in the
canteen as Wendy will be the only person in there so come on and help.
Try outs for the Coca Cola Cup start this Friday night the 12th August and again on 19th August. Three of our Year 6/7 players have been selected. They are Michael Eddy, Deni Varnhagen and Jack Reynolds. All the School Football Teams and I wish them the very best.
A Lightning Carnival will be conducted on the27th August. This is for 6/7s and a $3.00 fee is to be paid to your Coach on Saturday 13th August.
Presentations will be held at the School on the 27th August at 3.30pm. (Depending on the availability of the hall, if any changes I will be advising everyone through their Coach). This is to give our 6/7s time to go home and change and then return to be present for our presentation.
I have been very impressed with the children's attitudes towards football this year, WELL DONE. The children that have been asked to play for the other teams have all shown great sportsmanship. Thank You. Other schools and the Panther League have praised Happy Valley for this. WELL DONE.
Again a big THANK YOU

Boys Under-11 Soccer
We are
now into the second half of the soccer season and the Happy Valley School
Boys Under 11 team is having a solid season. The boys have picked up 5
wins and a draw from their first 9 games. The improvement in all players
from those playing their first season to those who have been playing for
2-3 years is very noticeable. The boys are really starting to think about
the game and are combining well as a team. A highlight of this has been
the thought they put into their set plays particularly from corners.
Unfortunately, the school was unable to field a senior primary boys team this year due to lack of numbers, however this year's Under 11s will form the core of the 2006 senior boys team. Although registrations have closed for 2005, there will be room for any budding players at all levels (boys and girls) who are looking for a game next year.
