The school Show Day will be held on Tuesday 6th September. Governing Council has given approval for the school to be closed on that day. If your child (ren) are going to the Show on a week day, please try and organise their visit for that day, so that they don't miss school work on other days.
For
Wakakirri 2005 we did a performance about a boy who wanted to be a Super
Hero. One night when he fell asleep, Space Cadets and Space Workers came
and took him to space. They landed on a planet where he battled fire
dragons and saved the princess. The princess gave him a medallion and when
he woke the next morning he still had the medallion.
Wakakirri is a huge story dance. We did so many practices and got to
choose which character we were. I was a Space Cadet. The taller people
were Space Cadets, it was fun. We had after school rehearsals and we
changed a lot of things, but in the end it was perfect.
We are
still amazed from the wonderful experience of Wakakirri! We have gone on a
wild ride in the past term with all this wonderful practice, but it was
nothing compared to our performance at Her Majesty's Theatre!
It's
the big day, the performance. It's not the first performance I've ever
done but it will be the best. All of the members of Wakakirri met in the
hall all revved up like V8's. Most people got their hair done, strange and
spacey. In town we had a dress rehearsal and it looked great. All the
emotions backstage -- happy, scared, sad and surprised, but the pizza for
tea changed all that!
Wakakirri was a really good, fun and scary experience for me. I enjoyed it
when we got our make-up on, it felt cold and slimy. We had our make up
done in a dance studio close to the Theatre.
Our
performance was in the city at Her Majesty's Theatre. When it was close to
the performance we had our face paint done. The rocks had red and yellow
flames, the Space Cadets had a silver face with big eyes and the Space
Workers had a silver face with blue lightening on the sides. When the face
paint was on it was a bit itchy but we got used to it.

I was
really nervous waiting in the dressing rooms for our performance. Our
group was fifth and there were six performances. When we were just about
to go on stage we had to line up and wait. I was so nervous I got a
stomach ache, but I was fine. When we got on stage it was so fun. I had a
really good time. I would love to do it next year!!! When we walked up to the stage we had to be silent. While we waited in the wings for our turn I had butterflies in my tummy. Finally we were on stage. I couldn't really see anything because of the bright lights but we all did our best. At the end of our performance everyone was clapping.
This
was an excellent experience for all of us! The changing rooms were great and made us feel like pop stars because they had lights around the mirrors. When we first got to the stage to perform it was really scary and we felt nervous when we saw the audience. Some of us couldn’t stop smiling when we were on stage and we loved the smoke machine and the strobe lights.
Jacinta and Kate enjoyed speaking about the performance and they got to
meet Emily B. We got the awards we think we deserved, since we were
beginners. We got gold for costumes and silver for props and we got bronze
for everything else.
What a fantastic event! Congratulations to Carol Atherton and Trudie Petho for masterminding the performance. Thank you to Kevin Jesshope, Simon Mueller and Barb Williams for your involvement. A big thank you to all the parents who gave their time and help to make Wakakirri possible this year!

We are celebrating Book Week last week, this week and next, with a mixture of activities that focuses everyone's attention on the importance of books and reading. The leadership team has visited every Junior Primary class and read nominated picture books to the classes. They have really enjoyed the delight and the interaction of the young children. In the library the book fair sale has been set up, and after looking at the books with buddy classes on Tuesday, students have been able to purchase their favourite books. Last week classes from R - 4 enjoyed the performance "Stars in your Eyes". On Tuesday next week at 11.00, using a variety of presentations, the primary classes will share the books they have been studying with the rest of the primary classes. Yr. 3,4 -- The Bear the Baron and the Bard, Go-go Fish (honour book), Amazing Australian Animals. Yr. 5 The Silver Donkey (winner, book of the year younger readers), A Horse called Elvis (honour book), Yr. 6 Tiff and the Trout, Yr.6/7 Soraya the Storyteller, Mutt Dog, Dougal the Garbage Dump Bear. All primary classes have read and voted for their favourite picture books. They absolutely loved Dougal and Mutt Dog! Both assemblies next week will be honoured with a special Rock 'n' Roll demonstration. |

It has been a busy, but exciting time. |
This
week is the last week for our eight Korean students. We will have a
special "Farewell Assembly" for them this Friday at 12.00. Each student
will be presented with a small gift to take back to Korea. They leave
Australia this Saturday to return to their families. I would like to take
this opportunity to thank both the families who have welcomed these
children into their homes and who have made their time here so special. I
would also like to thank the teachers and children who have had Korean
students in their classes and who have done such great things with them.
Is on Everyone is welcome I am looking for some musical items by family groups. If you would like to perform please let me know. Also if any students learn an instrument from a private teacher they are most welcome to participate. Barb Williams |

Parents often ask about why schools have fundraising events. Over the year, a number of groups in our school fundraise to support the variety of projects that happen in our school. The school Fundraising Committee, a subcommittee of Governing Council, has a unique function. Each year, as part of the school budgeting process, an amount is agreed on that needs to be raised, to go into the school budget, to enable the school to meet all its costs for that year. This figure is published at the Annual General Meeting in the budget report, and it is then the responsibility of the Fundraising Committee to raise that amount of money over the course of the year. Money raised goes in to general revenue. It is critical to the success of the school, to raise this money as it directly impacts on the school learning program.
We
hope all families get behind our fundraising program so that we can
achieve the $10000 budgeted for this year. We have a number of events
happening over the next terms. We are seeking your help in supporting
these events.

CAR PARKING |
The school is very aware of the difficulties which families face when parking to drop off and collect children at school. However, the sign at the entrance to the school car park clearly identifies that the Car Park is for staff and long-term visitors only. This does not allow for parents to use it to drop off and pick up their children each day. It is too busy and congested at these times and we ask that parents respect the purpose of the car park. The car park is not a safe place for young children in that vehicles such as delivery trucks come and go at all times. We are asking for your cooperation in this.

SICK CHILDREN |
This term has heralded a large number of winter "bugs." Numbers of children in many classes have been down and we have had a number of staff members who have succumbed as well. We ask that you ensure that children are fully recovered before they return to school, as we would like to prevent the spread of all these unpleasant viruses. Thank you.

SCHOOL CROSSING |
Just a reminder to use the school crossing, please. We have had a number of parents report that some families are crossing Education Road further along. We ask that adults help model safe behaviours for our students.
|
GRAND PARENTS DAY |
All classes will invite Grand Parents to visit the school on Friday 23rd September between 11.00 and 12.30 pm, to visit the classrooms and see our wonderful students at work. The students will take time out from their class work, to enjoy a show and tell with any visiting Grand Parents who would like to bring something to share with the students. Personal invitations to be part of this special event will be sent home to Grand Parents soon. Could school families please let our visitors know about the day so that they can keep the date clear!

Invitation to you all from |

What a great job our Year 3, 4 and 5 students did two weeks ago when they went out and planted hundreds of new plants in our neighbouring reserve! The helpers from the council were most impressed with their attitude and their knowledge of why we were doing this planting. |
|
When the loyal band of friends and volunteers went around on the following Saturday, it was obvious that the plants, all local endemic species, had been given the best possible start. Our next visit as a group is to be on Saturday September 17th from 1.30pm to 4.00pm. We would love to have your company to find out more of what this group does and for you to appreciate the wonderful work already accomplished. |
|
|
Why don't you ask your children to show what they have already done and over time you can watch as these plants mature and provide much-needed habitat for our local animals and birds as well as helping to keep our creek stable and cleaner? |

Mrs Neemann's class has been busy picking their produce from the Edible Garden. Melanie liked the carrots; they were nice when she tried them.

Well done to everyone who took part in the Lightning Carnival and Simul Night.
On Tuesday, Scott Paterson, Kieren Smith and Jack Price played "fast chess" against thirty of the league's best competitors. Kieren was one of only four who remained undefeated until the second last round.
Thursday's Simul Night saw a handful of state champions play dozens of competitors simultaneously, including two of our seniors and six juniors. Everyone played well, with Justin Szeitz surviving for more than an hour.
Back to normal competition next week.

The
year 3/4 sixers have finally come of age with two wins; 10 -- 6 on 16/8,
and then a convincing 32 -- 2 win on 23/8. All players have improved
greatly and are to be congratulated. A big thank you to Anita for
coaching and to all parents for their continued support and encouragement.
HAPPY
VALLEY FOOTBALL PRESENTATION
What a
terrific year of football.
This has been the best year for football. We have seen a lot of great skills and team playing. It has been good to see more parents supporting their children this year.
Happy Valley has been praised by other schools in the Southern area for their teamwork. When numbers have been down from the opposition and our players have been asked to play for the other side, Happy Valley have shown great sportsmanship (WELL DONE).
The presentation for the 2/3, 4/5 and 6/7 players will be held on 10/9/05 at 12:30pm in the Happy Valley School hall.
On the day there will be cans of drinks and a sausage sizzle for the football players, could parents please donate $2 on the day to cover costs.
I am also asking if parents could provide sweets, salads etc to go with the sausage sizzle.
Reminders that ALL Football tops are to be returned on the day (WASHED and CLEANED)
A big Thank you to Wendy Wilden for being in the canteen throughout the Season.
Thank you to everyone and I will see you on the day
