During last weekend 25 Happy Valley Pedal Prix riders competed in the International 24-hour Pedal Prix event. On Friday, 20 of the riders drove to Murray Bridge to help set up the pit and food tents. Between 6pm and 8pm on Friday, the 20 students participated in the time trials event. On Saturday morning the rest of the team arrived. Before the race started the whole team walked around the 2.1 km Sturt Reserve track. At 12 noon the race commenced with a rolling start. The Vortex had 3 post rammings, 1 flat tyre and chain problems. The Viper had 1 post ramming, 1 hay bail ramming and 3 flat tyres. Luckily all of the mishaps were repairable. There were 3 groups in each bike that started their 2-hour stints at 5pm. The last hour of the race in both bikes was the sprint round which includes the 5 fastest riders. Overall the Viper finished 167th and 41st in its category, where as the Vortex finished 189th overall and 55th in its category. Well done to all of the riders who participated in the 2005 Pedal Prix Events. All the students who participated would like to thank Kim Wilson for convening Pedal Prix and the other members of the parent and teacher committee -- Edna Vanderham, Georgie Goldfinch, Geoff Hutchings, Trevor Hogan, Scott Francis, Doug MacLean, Kay Dennert, Leanne Robertson, Sandie Hutchings and Kevin McDonald. Also all the other parents who helped during the year. Travis Kreslin on behalf of all Pedal Prix team members. Once again, a successful campaign, with both bikes finishing (although we had a shaky start with one bike. We smile now, but at the time there was some SERIOUS grumpiness). I would like to congratulate all the Team members, and their parents, who all jumped in to assist with the set-up, the catering, the timing, team supervision, maintenance and pack-up, and to the family and friends who supported our team during the whole event. A special thank you goes to those who spent tireless hours in getting the bikes 'race-ready', and to the people who did much running around, picking up and transporting food and equipment to and from the event. Last, but not least, a huge thank you to the Committee, Doug MacLean and Scott Francis, without whose help and support, we would not have had our Pedal Prix Teams. I hope the Year 7's had a great time and may they continue on with Pedal Prix in High School, and that the Year 5/6ers will be back for next year's race. Kim Wilson - Pedal Prix Convenor

THANKYOU TO OUR PEDAL PRIX

The success of Pedal Prix would not occur without Kim Wilson's dedication, the school's support and the committee, to help make Pedal Prix the great event that it is. Georgie Goldfinch -- Catering Sargeant
The end of Term 4 is usually the time when we farewell staff, students and others who are leaving the school. However we are saying farewell to one of our long-standing staff members at the end of Term 3. As many of you will be aware, Carmel Nicholson will be leaving Happy Valley at the end of this term. Carmel has been at the school for ten years, and so is due to move on, but she is also taking long service leave next term. We will be saying "Goodbye" at out final school assembly on the last day of term. If you would like to join us you are most welcome. Carmel is a highly valued member of our school team and is respected by staff, students and parents alike. We will really miss her wide range of contributions to our school and the community. I am sure that everyone wishes her all the very best in her future "adventures" and we know that the school who gets her next year will be very lucky. Thank you Carmel!
RIDES The prices of rides will vary. You will need 3 tickets ($3.00) for most rides -- the Jumping Castle, Fire Engine, motorised cars and pony rides. The Rock Climbing Wall will be $5.00, and the small slot cars will be $1.00. People who pre-purchase $20.00 worth of tickets will receive 21 tickets. There will also be 2 stalls selling tickets on the day. Once you have bought tickets, please keep them in a safe place, as we will not be able to replace lost tickets.

The events of this term will be celebrated at a whole school assembly which will be held on the last day of term immediately after recess at 11.00 am. All parents are welcome to attend this final assembly.
The
first part of the work of the Healthy Eating Committee is almost
completed. Working with the canteen staff, a new menu has been developed
for the canteen, to be adopted from the beginning of next term. The
message behind the new menu is that we all need to think about what we
eat, to make sure that our food intake is balanced and nutritious. This is
a very important message for students, so that they avoid foods high in
sugar, in fat and in sodium, foods that should be regarded as 'sometimes'
food. The 'sometimes' food will only available from the canteen in small
portions in 'meal deals', to reinforce this healthy eating message.
There is an enormous focus at the moment on obesity in our population, on having the energy to do all the things that we want to do, and on staying alert and healthy throughout our lives. These are messages that we need to instil in our children now through these initiatives, messages that they will carry throughout their lives.
The
new canteen menu is included with the newsletter. Please look at the
choices, discuss them with your children and order from the canteen.
Support the canteen in this new direction to help us get these important
messages across.

EDIBLE GARDEN MURAL |
Our fabulous new mural, designed and coordinated by our resident artist Debby Haskard-Strauss, has been completed and is displayed on the back wall in the edible garden area. The colourful mural provides a bright backdrop to the garden plots, and reinforces the healthy lifestyles messages that we are focusing on in the school in so many ways.
There will be an official opening of the mural this Friday 23rd September at 12.15 pm at the garden area. Everyone is welcome to attend this milestone in our school's development.

TREE PLANTING |
A group of Year 5 students recently went on a tree planting expedition with some of the children from Chandlers Hill Kindergarten. The activity was organised by Helen Whisson. Children were buddied up and had great fun! This is what two of the children had to say.

Planting with Kindy Buddies
A few weeks ago, 8 Year 5 students from Mrs Petho's class went tree
planting. Before we walked to where we were going, we collected 8 Kindy
children and buddied up with them. My buddy was Jamie. We were planting
the trees for National Tree Planting Day, and to use up the rest of the
plants. As we were planting, the adults (Mrs Whisson and two kindy
coordinators) were taking photos of us planting the trees. I had quite a
bit of fun.

Tree
Planting With The Kindy
A few weeks ago some of Mrs Petho's people went out to do some tree
planting with the kindy. My buddy (Byron) and I found a nice shady spot to
plant our trees. The holes were already dug for us. We found lots of worms
down deep in the soil. After we had planted we had a photo taken with
everyone.

CHILDREN TURNING 5 IN 2006 |
If you are aware of any child/ren who will be turning five years of age between now and the beginning of 2006-07 and who have not enrolled, could you please advise the Happy Valley School office either by calling in, or telephoning the School on 8381 7166. We have had a significant increase in enrolments over 2005, and we really need this information to assist us in our forward planning for 2006-07.
Also if you know that your child/children will not be attending Happy Valley next year, please let the office know as soon as possible as this will impact on our planning. Thank you for your help.

SCHOOL CAR PARK USE |
The school car park is a busy and dangerous place, at the beginning of the school day, and when students leave school, times when there is a lot of vehicle traffic. There have been a number of near misses with students and car drivers. Students are not to use the car park or the access roadways to it, as a shortcut through the schoolyard. Students must use the walking pathways only, to come into and to leave the school.
The car park is only to be used by school staff, and by long-term visitors to the school. Drivers who are entitled to use the car park were last year issued with a yellow permission card. Parents who were issued with a card last year because they had a significant voluntary role in the school, but who no longer need it because their involvement in the school has changed, are asked to return their card to the front office.

HEALTHY LIFESTYLES WEEK |
Each year the school recognizes PE Week, usually with a fitness walk and activities at Thalassa Park. This year we are going to hold our recognition in Week 4 of next term and expand our celebration of PE Week to cover the whole week. There will be a range of healthy lifestyle activities available for students to participate in over the week.
As part of our Healthy Lifestyles Week, we are providing an opportunity for parents to learn more about creating healthy families. To this end we will be inviting parents to an evening where information will be provided about communicating with your children regarding the issues around drug use. Along with this, U-Count Support Services will present information about upcoming courses, one of which, 'Effective Parenting Workshop', is included as a flier with this newsletter.
More details will be outlined in the first newsletters of next term.

UNDER
11 BOYS SOCCER -- SEASON WRAP
The Happy Valley Under 11 boys soccer team have just one game remaining in
what has been a very successful season. They have won 8 and drawn one of
their 12 games and are unbeaten
in
their last 7 matches. All the players have contributed to the excellent
results and each will take away plenty of moments to be proud of during
the season.
The
team has scored a remarkably high 67 goals and only conceded 14 goals to
their opponents. The defence has been strong and has been led by Scott
Goldfinch and Ashley Lithgow who have shown great skill and anticipation,
and Andrew Kite and Sean Goldfinch have done a fine job whilst sharing the
goalkeeping duties. Until sidelined with a knee injury, Jake Boylan also
proved to be a handy defender. Shane Martin, Josh Cryer and Ben Fischer
have all improved their ball handling skills since last season and have
shown good vision in the midfield. Ben Braddon has also shown
considerable improvement in his first year scoring a couple of goals, and
Wesley Evans can always be relied upon to give 100% as he covers so much
ground during a game. Declan Day led the scoring early in the season with
20 goals and Justin Kite has also shown some ability up forward with 27
goals. Daniel Moore runs hard all day in the midfield and has picked up
11 goals himself. All of the boys have played forward, midfield and
defence and have proven to be capable in a variety of positions on the
field. Congratulations to the boys on a great season and here's hoping
the two narrow one goal losses to Port Noarlunga can be reversed this
week.
I
would like to recognise the efforts of Neil and Julie Cryer for their help
in preparing the team each week and to Kay Martin for first aid. Thanks
also to all the parents, family and friends who have come out to the games
in fair weather and foul -- your support does not go unnoticed. And on
behalf of all of us involved with Happy Valley soccer, we would like to
thank Georgie Goldfinch for her tireless hard work in carrying out the
role of co-ordinator. She overcame some difficult challenges during the
season.
Finally, we can look forward to the 2006 season with great anticipation when we hope to see all of this year's players who are still at Happy Valley together with plenty of new faces. All children should keep soccer in mind when thinking about their sport choices for next year.
Gary Kite. -- Coach
Last
games are this Saturday -- Senior Girls and U11 teams at home and our U9
team are away followed by our Soccer Presentation commencing with a BBQ at
11.30 -- 11.45am. Hope to see all our Soccer families there.
I
would like to thank the coaches who did a great job with our teams and all
the parents who supported the children throughout the season. I hope
everyone enjoys the summer break and look forward to seeing everyone next
year. Good luck to the Year 7 students and I hope they continue their
soccer in High School.
We still need a co-ordinator to take over for 2006.
Georgie Goldfinch -- Coordinator.

NEWS FROM ABERFOYLE PARK |
Dear
Parents/Guardians
I'd like to take this opportunity to thank the current group of Year 7
parents and students for choosing Aberfoyle Park High School for their
education next year. It is my understanding the vast majority of this
year's group of Year 7 are enrolled at Aberfoyle Park High School for next
year. I see it as a big vote of confidence in my school and the direction
we are taking.
On Friday 25th August I attended, with two of my students and the chairperson of our school council, Keith Huxtable, morning tea with John Howard. Whilst waiting for the Prime Minister to arrive two students and their parents from Happy Valley came over to say hello. The parents commented on how impressed they were with the school and our Open Night. In particular they commented on how committed, passionate and enthusiastic the staff were and how this melded with the ethos of Happy Valley. I was so pleased to hear about the congruence we have between our school cultures.
Welcome again to Grade 7 parents and students.
WENDY TEASDALE-SMITH Principal
