Reminder -- Pupil Free Day A reminder that the school will be closed
next
Monday, October 24th. Welcome back to the beginning of a very busy term. As you will read there are just so many things happening over the next 9 weeks. In particular, we would like to welcome our new Reception children, who started school for the first time this week, on Wednesday, in Mrs Lynne Davies' class.
Don't forget - our Gala Day is just over a week away! We have had quite a
few offers of help - many thanks to those who have made those offers. The
committee would really appreciate any help you can give. A copy of the
plan and stalls is included with this Newsletter.

Over the year we have been developing a variety of programs, which improve student health and fitness. The programs have included Drug Strategy, Be Active-Let's Go and Healthy Eating. In Week 4 of this term, from 7th to the 11th November, we will be focusing on all the messages from these programs with students, and with parents. We will begin the week with a fitness walk to Thalassa Park, which we traditionally do at this time of the year. However, instead of a sausage sizzle lunch, we will have a fruit snack, before returning to school for our normal lunch. On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, all classes will be tested by the PhysAdd group to determine their current fitness levels. Staff from PhysAdd specialize in this work and they have been contracted to undertake and then report on this testing program. Their report will give us baseline data on students' fitness levels now, which can then be compared with further testing results in future years, so that we can monitor improvements in student fitness levels over time. Also on Tuesday and Wednesday, classes will be offered a range of wellbeing activities, from which they will be able to choose, in the 'Pick an Activity' part of the week. They will include things like Kinesiology, Tae Kwon Do, Chess, water activities at Blue Dolphin, Archery and Healthy Food. On Thursday the focus for Junior Primary children will change to 'Come 'n Try' sports activities. Class groups will rotate through a variety of sports including Gymnastics, Wheelchair Sports and Basketball. Then on Friday, to complete the week, the Primary students will have their sports Come 'n Try' day, when they will be able to choose from sports like Lacrosse, Rugby and Croquet. For parents on Wednesday evening, there will be a special information event at the school, when presenters from 'How to Drug Proof Your Child' and Dr David Caldicott from the Royal Adelaide Hospital will share with parents how to support their children to avoid involvement with drug taking. The cost of the 'Healthy Lifestyles Week' will be covered by our Be Active government funding. More details, and consent forms where they are needed, will be sent home with students next week. It will be a busy and active week for students, and will reinforce in a big way all the positive health messages we have been promoting throughout the year. |
So many things to Show and Tell! Grandparents' Day was a great success on Friday 23rd September. Over 80 visitors brought things to share with their grandchildren's classes and then had the opportunity to view the students in their classroom learning environment. It was good to see visitors from Bethsalem Village visiting as well. Visitors enjoyed morning tea in the staff room and were shown around the school by some classes. Finishing the morning was the opening ceremony, at the Edible Garden, for the wonderful mural designed by our resident artist Debbie Haskard-Strauss. After the speeches and cutting of the ribbon many visitors and students took a close up look at the mural created by keen parents and students who have spent many hours with Debbie meticulously painting in the detail of the scenes.

Decisions are currently under way with a view to establishing balanced and equitable class groups for next year. If you feel that there is important educationally based information which you would like us to consider when discussing the best learning setting for your child, please put this in writing and send it to the Principal. As you can imagine, requests for a specific teacher cannot be considered as a part of this process. Teachers will be considering 'learning' friendships and relationships when formulating classes for next year. The placement criteria of students within class structures will be done by the teaching staff taking into consideration: Priority 1 - A balance in:-
Priority 2 - Consideration of:-
Please feel free to discuss any issues with your child's class teacher. If from these discussions there is an identified educational issue you wish to highlight and be considered as part of the placement of your child, please put this in writing to the Principal, Doug MacLean. Such information can only be considered if received no later than FRIDAY NOVEMBER 4th. Parents and students will be notified of class -- teacher placements on Friday 9th December.
School Photos will be taken on Friday October 28th Please ensure that your children are in full school uniform for class photos. Please return envelopes and money to the front office or send along with your child on the day.
Our traditional school Christmas Night will be held on the last Monday night of term, Monday 12th December, on the school oval. The program will include student and adult items, and there will be community carol singing led by our school choir. The evening will finish at dusk with a spectacular fireworks display. Put the date in your diary now and make sure you don't miss this fabulous night of celebration, to finish the school year! |
Last term the fundraising committee sent home raffle books to each family. We have received most of the books back at school. Many thanks to those of you who have already returned them. However, we were unable to draw the prize-winners on the last day of term as planned, due to the fact that many books had not been returned. We are requesting your assistance in returning all books, whether or not tickets are sold, by tomorrow Friday 21st October, so that we can draw our lucky winners. Thanking you in anticipation.

NATIONAL SAFE SCHOOLS FRAMEWORK |
The National Safe Schools Framework has been in schools for some time now. It addresses many aspects of creating a safe and positive environment for all involved in the life of the school. Through our Bully Audits and follow up we are addressing the element that relates to providing support for students.
Page 4
As a school we need to report to DECS regarding our progress this year in addressing the Framework.
You are invited to a meeting of interested parents and caregivers on Wednesday November 2nd at 7 -- 8:30pm in the staff room. The purpose of the meeting will be to begin looking at the framework elements and developing a process whereby, as a group, we can work through them from a parent perspective. I envisage several meetings throughout this term and would value your input at as many as you are able to attend. Developing a core group of interested parents is my aim. The group could certainly continue to work into 2006.
These meetings are intended to look at the whole school environment and positively review and suggest improvements.
Please let me know if you are interested in attending.
