WELCOME TO THE NEW SCHOOL YEAR

We welcome all school families as we begin another school year. It is always great to see students catching up with friends again after the holiday break, settling in to their new class areas and talking with their new teachers on the first day back. A new school year is an exciting time especially for students, but also families, and believe it or not, even for teachers! Let's all work together to make this a really enjoyable, productive and memorable year.

NEW STAFF JOIN US

As most of you will know, our new principal is Ms. Prue Rosevear. Prue comes to us from Coorara, and prior to that, Largs Bay and Brighton Primary Schools.

Sally Johnson has come to Happy Valley after a year on leave, and was appointed as part of the school choice process. Prior to 2005, Sally was at Hallett Cove East Primary School. This year Sally is teaching a Year 1/2 class.

Sharon Lancaster has joined our staff for 2006, having also had leave. Sharon has taught over a wide area, including Kangaroo Island. She will be teaching, for 2 days a week, with Sally in Unit 4.

Mardie Strachan is teaching a Reception class in Unit 5. Mardie is an exchange teacher from Dunfermline in Scotland, and has exchanged with Doug MacLean. Mardie is keen to teach the children about Scotland.

We have been lucky in that Ros Mazurek has been placed at Happy Valley as a temporarily placed teacher, for 2 days each week. Ros is currently providing some non-instruction time for teachers and has assumed responsibility for technology. We hope that she will stay.

If you have visited the front office you may already have met Amelia Wright, who is now our Front Office person. Amelia comes to us from Highgate, and she has already made welcome many visitors to the school.
Denise Lucas has taken up a new role in the Resource Centre.

There are two other staff who are 'new' to the school this year.  Trudie Petho has been reappointed to the school to fill a part time vacancy working with Scott Francis to teach a Year 5 / 6 class. D'Arcy Jones has also been reappointed to take the Year 7 class. We're very fortunate to have these two very experienced and well liked teachers working in the school again this year.

Bob Beaton has returned to Happy Valley having taught here several years ago. Bob has most recently been at Allenby Gardens and is teaching a Year 5 / 6 class this year.

We are really pleased to have our new Japanese teacher, Juno Oka. Juno was most recently at Woodend, and the students are really looking forward to going to Japanese.

WELCOME NEW STUDENTS

We would like to welcome our four new Reception children, who started school on Wednesday last week. The children are in Unit 5 in Shelley Saunders' class.  They are Sarah Chapman, Cassandra Jose, Sophie Todd and Leila Wood. The children settled very quickly in to school life and always look as though they are enjoying what they do.

A special welcome, too, to a number of other children, who are also new to our school. They are Sharni Bird, Jaiden Wardle, Kayla Sutton, Georgia Murray, Sam Shaw, Gemma Brown and Rhys Kavanagh-Jones.

A welcome also, to our new families -- it is wonderful that you have chosen Happy Valley School as the starting point for your child's learning journey. We look forward to working with you over the next years.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU

A big thankyou to all the parents who have paid their school fees, made arrangements for an instalment plan and/or submitted their application for School Card, this is greatly appreciated.

For copies of the invoices sent home last December, the instalment plan arrangements and application forms for School Card, please contact Andrea Roberts in the Front Office.

A Reminder:-  Governing Council has endorsed the policy that students will not be included in excursions/performances until their $35 performance levy has been paid.

CAR PARKING

The beginning of the school year is an appropriate time to remind all of our school community that the school car park is for use by staff only, with the only exception being people accessing the disabled car parking spaces.

We are very aware that there is an enormous amount of pressure on car parking spaces in the vicinity of the school. However we have recently had to increase the number of disabled car parking spaces and this has put further pressure on this parking area.

The disabled parks are for use by cars or vans with disabled permits for 24 hours per day, 7 days a week.

We ask that you respect this request. The car park is not a safe area for any children, and we have had a number of near misses with young children.

The 'Parking Permit' system introduced in 2004 has been discontinued.   Therefore we ask that holders of the (yellow) permits destroy them or return them to the front office.

SCHOOL CROSSING

Congratulations to the students who have undertaken traffic monitor responsibilities so far this year.  They have been very diligent and organised.  Students who were absent and missed training last year, will have the opportunity to be involved at the end of February when a further training session has been arranged.

As quite a few people have been observed crossing at other points on Education Road, we urge you, for the safety of everyone, to please use the Traffic Crossing.

SCHOOL TIMES

Just a reminder about school times.
8.55am School starts -- classroom programs begin.
3.15pm School day ends.

Children may arrive at school from 8.30am. They are not to arrive at school before then unless they are booked into the Out of School Hours Care. This is very important as staff are not on duty until 8.30 and therefore students are not supervised if they do arrive early.

LOST PROPERTY

A huge number of windcheaters, t-shirts, track pants, shoes, socks, hats & drink bottles were left in the lost property area at the end of last year.  Thanks to Mrs K for sorting them at the beginning of this year.  Please see Barb Williams if you would like to look for any of your child’s lost clothing.

PLEASE label your child's clothing this year so that, if lost, it can be returned to the rightful owner.

PICKING UP STUDENTS AFTER SCHOOL

For the safety of students, we remind you that if you are not able to pick up your child by 3:30pm, he/she will be directed, by the yard duty teacher, to wait in the Front Office.

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC

Our School offers a range of opportunities for students to learn to play a musical instrument. As students become more proficient in their instruments, there are opportunities to perform -- at assemblies and at music evenings.  Learning an instrument is a wonderful skill to develop at an early age and enjoy for life.  Music Education, including instrumental playing, can also enhance a child's development in many other areas of learning.

This year all students, beginning and continuing to learn an instrument, must complete an Application to Learn a Musical Instrument form. These are available from the Front Office.  All applications to learn will be considered by the class teacher, the instrumental teacher and the school instrumental music coordinator (Barb Williams) before approval is given for students to learn.

Recorder -- teacher Mrs Julie Kuchel
Recorder students, beginning or continuing, need to return the slip below to Barb by Monday next week.

All Year 2 -- 7 students are invited to enrol to learn recorder.  Learning the recorder can be an introduction to another musical instrument but it can also be played as an instrument in its own right.  Lessons are conducted on Tuesdays in small groups according to year level and ability.  School approved Yamaha descant recorders can be purchased from the book room for $7.70 each.

The fee structure for this year is:

  • Term 1                   $23.00

  • Term 2                   $23.00

  • Term 3                   $23.00

  • Term 4                   $23.00               $92.00

Fees need to be paid in advance for the term or year.

Lessons will begin in week three and the fees need to be paid directly to Mrs Kuchel. (Phone 8278  2513)

String Program -- teacher Mrs Jenni Eime
Students  from  Years 3 -- 7  are  invited  to  enrol in our violin

program. Viola, 'Cello and Double Bass lessons are also on offer. Mrs Eime is our string teacher and is employed by DECS.  Costs are $25 per term and a $10 administration fee. Students need to hire or own an instrument.  Violins are available for hire from the school for a one off $60 instrument hire fee. Parents will be invoiced by the school.

Beginning students need to complete and return the slip below.  New students are invited to come to one 'trial' lesson and then decide whether they would like to continue.

Guitar -- teacher Ms Alison Hansen
A number of students have been learning guitar with Alison over the last few years.  She is happy to take new enrolments and can be contacted on 0419 825 517.  These lessons are held on Wednesday afternoons.

Keyboard -- teacher Mr Neil Weber (Dr Rhythm)
Neil Weber has been teaching keyboard for many years at Happy Valley.  For information about keyboard tuition contact Neil on 8358 6781 or mobile 0413 017 887.   He will be teaching at Happy Valley on Monday afternoons.

Saxophone, Clarinet & Flute -- teacher Mr Steve King
Steve King has taught saxophone at our school in the past and is prepared to accept new students in saxophone, clarinet and flute.  For more information contact him on 8382 8417.

CHOIR 2006

Happy Valley School will again be participating in The Festival of Music.

The Festival Choir is open to students from years 5, 6 & 7.  Students who sang in the Choir last year are very strongly encouraged to take part again as they form a core of experienced singers from whom the newer members can learn and become more confident, and of course they can again be a part of a wonderful experience.

I will be attending a two day Conference this week on Friday and Saturday to learn the 2006 repertoire and will then begin an introductory session for all year 5, 6 & 7s next Wednesday.

The Festival of Music involves students attending weekly rehearsals at school, learning songs and choreography, and presenting them in a massed choir concert at the Festival Theatre in September.

It is a rewarding experience and also provides students with a range of musical and choral skills that benefits their musical and social development.

O.S.H.C.

Our next committee meeting will be held on Monday 20th February at 6.15pm in the OSHC room.  If you would like to find out more about how Out of School Hours Care operates, or you have any questions, you are very welcome to join us.

SPORT

  SPORT CO-ORDINATORS URGENTLY NEEDED
We still require co-ordinators and coaches for out of hours cricket and soccer.

A cricket co-ordinator is most urgently needed at the moment, as matches are due to commence Saturday week, February 18th. A co-ordinator's role includes attending sports committee meetings at school twice a term, liaising with and distributing relevant information to coaches and possibly attending association meetings when necessary. It does not involve the handling of money as this is done through the school’s front office.

We have enough nominations to field three cricket sides but only one coach so if assistance is not forthcoming we will only have a single side. Matches are played on Saturday mornings and training times can be negotiated depending on the availability of coaches. This year the C Grade team will be 8-a-side.

Players are also required for football and netball. There will be three football teams this year, Yr 2/3, Yr 4/5 and Yr 6/7. It is important to note that the year 2/3 competition is played to modified rules meaning games are non-contact and aim to develop the skills and enjoyment of football and to experience team sport.  This year it appears we will have two netball sides but extra players are needed to ensure the required numbers. Interested students should return a nomination form available from school, indicating their sport of interest as soon as possible.

If you can assist particularly with cricket, please contact, Scott Francis or Georgie Goldfinch ASAP.

Students wishing to play a sport this year but who have not completed the necessary form, may still do so by asking at the front office for a copy.

EDIBLE GARDEN

Do you love gardening?

Do you want to help out you child’s class each week?

Our Edible Garden Committee is looking for more families to become involved in the co-ordinating of the garden.  A meeting once a term and general tidy up each start of a season is all that is involved as well as watering during holidays when necessary.

The other way to help is in the class to supervise when planting takes place and weeding once a week.

The students learn from our garden, not only how to grow things, but also the continuous responsibility of looking after a garden.

Please complete the tear off slip if you are interested.

Volunteers Wanted!
Companions of learning together
New knowledge you'll surely unwrap
There are treasures to find for a lively young mind
And that's the nice thing about LAP
                                                          Max Fatchen

Are you interested in becoming a volunteer in the Learning Assistance Program in 2006?

Are you new to the school and wish to know more about the program?

Volunteers, in partnership with teaching staff, work with students on a one-to-one basis, for a regular session each week.  This individual time creates more learning situations where students can experience success.

Our volunteers find helping in LAP a positive and rewarding experience and we always have children who can benefit from your help.

LAP has get togethers at least once each term with both students and volunteers.  These get togethers are a great sharing time for the volunteers, new friends are made and new skills shared.  The LAP Association has training available during the year for volunteers.

Please fill in and return the attached form to the front office or speak to Wendy Nicolle or Judy Davies.
