Inside this issue................. |
There is a saying that 'It takes a Village to raise a Child'. Put into the context of Happy Valley School, this means that no one person can be responsible for the development of the whole child. Many people influence the decisions students make and the development of their attitudes towards themselves and to the world. Teachers and parents, the peer group of students and the community all contribute to the progress children make in their learning in any particular year. This year we will continue to place high value on establishing partnerships in learning between home and school. Our school logo states that we are encouraging students to strive for excellence, co-operation and communication in their learning and we look forward to working with the School Community in this endeavour, keeping open the channels of communication so that issues can be discussed and resolved and positives identified, acknowledged and celebrated.
Please continue to encourage your children so that the 'Village' that is assisting them throughout the year can result in successful and happy students.
During last January, I was very fortunate in being given the opportunity to teach for three weeks at the Korea-Australia English Teachers Camp for Global Understanding held in Icheon, Korea. Eighteen South Australian teachers took part in the program jointly organised through the South Australian Department of Education and Children's Services, The Gyeonggi Education District of Korea and UNESCO. This is the fourth of such programs that have proved very successful in promoting connections and cultural understanding between South Australia and one of our regional neighbours. We worked with over 100 Korean Teachers of English from Primary to High School providing opportunities for their development of English and sessions on classroom methodology and ideas. The Korean teachers provided us with a range of cultural learning opportunities in the form of Arts workshops and demonstrations. This exchange of ideas and cultures will be of huge value and benefit to the students of these teachers in both Australia and Korea as we put into practice some of the knowledge and skills we learnt. Tours to various Korean cultural centres and sites and a homestay with a Korean family, provided further insight into the Korean culture and personal connections with people and we all thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

This week a group of selected Korean teachers from the Camp is in Adelaide to visit schools and get a small taste of 'Australian culture'. During their visit to Happy Valley School on Friday, they will view several of the school's programs including the Edible Garden, Plant Propagation area and Information Technology room. Their visits to classrooms will enable them to see and talk to students and teachers about their literacy and other learning programs. The opportunity to ask questions and hold conversations, that this program provides, is indeed a valuable way of building relationships between individuals and their countries. Experiences such as this can only strengthen Australia's relationship with our regional neighbours and I encourage all members of the school community to take up any opportunities to furthering our understanding of our geographical region and the rich cultures of its people. On Monday 20th February, the Year 6/7 classes went on an excursion to the city. When we first arrived we sat down in front of the museum for an early recess. My class (Mr Mueller's) went in the museum first, half of the class then headed for the Earth Science 3D centre in the Adelaide University. We had to sit in a small room with a huge white screen. Then we were given small black glasses with pink and green lenses, which were 3D, and then the lights were turned off. We looked at Tasmania, Volcanic areas of the planet, Tsunami activity, Earthquakes on the Moon, Mars and Earth. It was an excellent link to our work on the Jason Project. |
Next was the Australian Electoral Commission with Trish. We learnt about the planning that goes into an Election, which I was surprised about. Four people were chosen to do a campaign speech about why their food was the best. The four foods were hamburger, fish and chips, salad roll and pizza. In my class the winner was Scott with salad roll. He was the winner with an absolute majority (more than 50% of the vote). The other class had to use the preferential system and distribute second and third preferences, as their result was close. This was interesting, as we have been learning about the Australian Parliament leading up to our trip to Canberra.
In the museum there were a lot of fake animals. Near the giant squid there was a mummy section, which had real mummies in it and a few mummified cats, it was really very scary. In the section with all the fake animals it was amazing how big they were compared to me. In the reptile and arachnid section there were live and dead animals. I was very scared. There was a bird eating spider on the desk, we weren't sure if it was real or not because it didn't move much. Overall, the excursion was great. Lauri Hogan -- (Mr Mueller)
The children in Shelley Saunders' class began Science and Technology activities this week. Parent helpers work with small groups of children to increase their knowledge by predicting and discovering in a wide range of topics throughout the year. Children were busy

We often have a number of visitors in our Front Office area. We ask that all parents or other visitors, who may need to see one of the leadership team, or someone else in the Admin area, please report to whoever is at the Front Desk, before going on to see any other staff. In this way, Amelia, or whoever is on duty at the reception desk, can check if that person is free. We also ask that parents who take students from the school, during the school day, or who arrive late, always sign the student out or in at the Front Office. This also applies to parents or volunteers working in the school or coming to meetings. This is an important Occupational Health and Safety issue, as we need to be able to account for all people on the school grounds in case of an emergency.
Sunscreen Promotion We have had a number of queries already about Entertainment Books. We will be selling Entertainment Books again this year and will send home information in the near future. |

Parents need to be aware of the rules relating to parking on this side of the road. They will incur a parking fine if any part of a vehicle is on the footpath. These footpaths need to be kept clear for the safety of our students walking home. Parking along lower Woodswallow Drive is a safe option and then using our nice new paths to safely get to the School crossing!
Vacation Care booking forms will be available on Monday 6th
March, 2006 at 6.30pm in the OSHC room

The instrumental program has begun for the year and it is so pleasing to see many students taking up playing for the first time. The retention rate of students continuing to learn is also very good. The lesson is only part of the learning process though. Unless children are encouraged and practise, their progress will not be so evident and they will lose interest and want to give up learning. Some ways in which, as parents, you can assist your children in progressing in their interest and skills in music are:

BASKETBALL
Thank you,
FOOTBALL I am waiting on the coaches to give me the nights that all players will be training. Can all parents make sure that all the children have read the code of behaviour? If children do misbehave at training or at the games they will not play for that day and if it continues they will be asked to miss games. The first round for all grades will be on the 6/5/06. There will be 14 rounds but NO GAMES on the June long weekend (so you can still go away MUM and DAD) We are looking for more Yr 2/3 players. Parents need to be aware that at this grade the rules are modified. There is no tackling and no bumping, the oval is set up into three sections giving all children a chance to handle and kick a football. It is all about the 2/3's learning the skills of football. |
