Important Information in this Newsletter

  • Canteen not open

  • Student Lateness and Absence

  • Student Reports and Interviews

  • Car Park

Canteen
As per information in our last newsletter the canteen will not be open on Mondays as from next Monday the 29th of May. All children will need to bring their recess and lunch.

Student Lateness, Absence and Exemption from Attendance
It is most concerning that quite a number of students are arriving after 8.55am. This practice has an extremely detrimental effect not only on their own learning and work habits but also on the learning of other students and the ability of the teacher to start the day in an organised and settled way.

We therefore need to stress that it is our expectation that all children are in class and getting organised at this time. A reminder that all late children need to be signed in at the office.

Exemption from Attendance
Children are under compulsion to attend school from the time that they are enrolled at school, that is, for the majority, the age of 5, or from 6 to 16 years of age.

There are a number of reasons which are acceptable for absence e.g. illness, medical appointments, representing the district or state in sport, religious or cultural reasons and take-home, suspension, exclusion.

In other situations it is expected as a legal requirement under the Education Act that parents and caregivers apply for exemption.

This is not a new practice but needs to be communicated as a DECS requirement.  The following information comes from the Director, Schools & Children's Services -

"The Principal can approve exemptions from attendance for periods of 1 day to 4 weeks.  More than this has to be approved by the Director [as above].  For more than 4 weeks, applications need to be received at the school at least 4 weeks prior to the absence".

Both application forms are available from the front office.

We do appreciate parents letting us know when a child is going to be absent and the reason for their absence. We will from now on be adopting a practice that is used in many schools which is to contact parents / caregivers as soon as practically possible on the morning of an unexplained absence.

Whilst this knowledge will assist us it is also a very good way to know that all children have arrived safely at school. [I can also guarantee that it also eliminates the thought of any child "wagging" school].

We will be purchasing an answering machine hopefully in the next few weeks, which will assist parents to leave a message at night, or early in the mornings.

Student Reports and Interviews
Student Reports will be sent home with each student next Friday the 2nd of June. Hopefully everyone has booked an interview time with the class teacher. Please remember to bring the report and folder with you.

Car Park
There has obviously been some confusion in recent years about the use of the car park. The following recommendation was put to Governing Council this week and agreed upon.

The car park is for the sole use of employees and personnel approved by DECS or the Principal between the hours of 8.00am and 4.00pm

The school sign at the front gate will be changed to reflect this.

PRINCIPAL'S AWARDS

Congratulations to the following students who have received Principal's Awards, for demonstrating our school values.  They are Katie Walton, Cody Cox, Danny Udy, Connor Wright and Deayana Batten.

PARENTS AS PARTNERS

Our "Parents as Partners" program has started this week. For those parents with children at Chandlers Hill Kindergarten, office staff have offered to collect the children from the kindy and bring them back to school at 3.00 so that their parents can attend the complete session.

LIONS CHILD OF COURAGE AWARD CONGRATULATIONS JOSH

Congratulations to Josh Robertson for not only being one of 25 South Australian young people to be   nominated, but also for recently co-winning, the Lions Child of Courage Award.  Last Thursday Josh was invited to a special Ceremony at Government House, Adelaide, to be presented this Award by the Governor, Marjorie Nelson-Jackson.  He received a medal for his nomination and an inscribed Plaque in recognition of his courage and perseverance.

THE CANBERRA EXPERIENC

Our Canberra experience 2006 was a very special one and featured in this week's newsletter is a small cross section of student reflections and experiences. I have no doubt that this Canberra Trip will remain a highlight for these students and continue to impact positively on their learning.

All of our students need to be congratulated on their excellent attitude and behaviour for the duration of this experience. At all times they were curious, interested, asked questions, showed respect and understanding and participated fully.

Follow up discussions and work at school have revolved around: structures of government, appreciation of our War Veterans and the sacrifices made, wealth distribution, artistic appreciation, the wonders of science and our nation’s fabulous sporting achievements. What a smorgasbord!

Our students were bombarded with amazing experience after amazing experience and took it all in their stride to build on their incredible understanding of their role as Australian Citizens and appreciation of our enviable way of life. All of this crammed into 4 amazing days, after 16 long but exciting bus hours! They all deserve a medal!

Thank you again to all parents for supporting this concept at Happy Valley School. I am looking forward to 2007 and another successful trip to our National Capital.

Regards
Simon Mueller
Canberra Coordinator.

The following snippets on the trip to Canberra are from a Journal by Elise Hardwick
On Sunday we left school at 4:00 pm.  My parents saw me off.  I was so excited!

Arriving in Canberra -- Day 1.
After we unpacked we travelled to the Australian Institute of Sport.  When we arrived we met up with our guide, ours was Bronze Medallist Jarad Tallent of the 20km walk.  We first got shown the pool where the Australian Olympic swimmers train.  He then took us to the volleyball courts.  They were a special surface that had been from the Sydney Olympics.  He then took us to the gym where some girls were training.  Next, he took us to the basketball courts.  Some girls were training.  We then had finished the tour.  Jarad then took us to a room where there were heaps of interactive sports and things.  It was fun!  We then left and boarded the bus.

Kristen, Taylah, Elle and Scott on the bus.

Day 2.
After breakfast we departed for the National Portrait Gallery at Old Parliament House.  When we arrived a tour guide was waiting for us.  His name was Sam.  He told us to take a fold out stool to sit on.  So when we picked up our stools he told us to sit in front of a portrait of Captain James Cook.  He talked to us about the painting and told us how much it was worth.  It was worth 5.3 million dollars.  After, he showed us a few more portraits and then we had finished the tour.

The next tour was of the Senate and the House of Representatives.  Our guide first took us to the House of Representatives, which is green.  There she showed us some things they use in the room.  I sat on one of the seats that the members used to use.  After the talk we walked across the hall to the Senate, which is red.  There I sat where the visitors used to sit.  She dressed a few people up as the speaker, the queen and the prince.  It was really funny to see people dress up!  After the tour of the Senate we left Old Parliament House and travelled to New Parliament House.

Amelia (Queen), Mitchell (Prince) and Scott (Usher)

We then got on the bus and drove back to our lodge and had dinner.  It was Lasagne.  After dinner we got ready for the movies.  We saw Ice Age 2.  When we got there we walked into the theatre and sat down.  We also got given a coke and popcorn.  My favourite part of the movie was when Sid was the fire king.  I enjoyed it a lot.  We then left and got back at about 10:30 pm.

Day 3.
On Wednesday we woke up had breakfast and got ready for Questacon, the National Science and Technology Centre.  We then departed the lodge and drove to Questacon.  When we arrived we got out of the bus and got our hands stamped.  We then walked inside and got split into groups of about seven.  We then walked off into different galleries.  There were about seven.  My group first looked at the sports gallery.  There was a skateboarding race, a running race and a cricket skills tester.  We then looked around for a while then we moved to the sideshow gallery.  At the sideshow gallery there was a thing called the Freefall.  It was a bar, which you hang off in mid air then you drop and slide down this metal slide.  It was so much fun!  Also in the side show gallery was a roller coaster simulator.  It was really fun!  We then went on to the next gallery, awesome earth.  I went in an earthquake house.  It was pretty cool.  I also saw lightning strikes.  We then moved on to the next gallery.  The Strike A Cord gallery.  I conducted an orchestra.  After looking around for a while we moved on to the wavelength gallery.  I played a harp without strings.  After we had a good look in all the galleries we left for the War Memorial.

"One, two, three, four!"

Page 4

When we arrived at the War Memorial we had lunch on the front steps.  After lunch we sat down inside.  We then got split into groups of nine.  We then started our self-guided tour.  It was really moving.  We looked at different times in war and uniforms.  It was very informative.  I liked going to the grave of the Unknown Soldier.  It was very moving.  I also found one of my relatives on the computers there.  His name was Herbert Hardwick.  He got killed in action and he was in the First World War.  I really enjoyed the War Memorial.  We then departed and left for the National Gallery.

Day 4.
When we arrived at the Museum, we got into groups of four or three.  We then had to look for something that's special to Australia in the museum and take a photo of it.  I took a photo of an Anzac soldier, because they fought for Australia.  After we did that activity we were allowed to go off and look around the museum.  Our group first went to circa, the revolving theatre.  It was very interesting.  After we looked around for a couple of hours we departed and drove to the CSIRO Discovery Centre.

Friday 7:00 am arrival at Happy Valley School.
Our parents were waiting for us.  We grabbed our luggage and drove home with our parents!  I loved Canberra so much It was a great experience.  I hope to go back there again some time.

Plane trip to Canberra
On the 3rd of April 2006 Mitchell McDonald, Joshua Robertson, Jack Reynolds, Ms Williams, Miss Strachan and Robyn Preece went to Adelaide Airport to catch a plane to Canberra as a Year 7 camp. We went on the plane to give Josh some company as he could not travel by coach due to his unfortunate accident. We boarded the aeroplane and set off for the hour and a half flight. On the plane we had breakfast and it was ok/bad. On the plane Josh, Mitchell and Jack all sat next to each other in a three-seat row, and it was really fun. When we arrived Josh and Robin caught a taxi to the lodge but Ms Williams, Miss Strachan, Mitchell and Jack hired a Tarago van to take back to the lodge. Ms Williams got us lost and took us on an unexpected tour of Canberra.

The plane trip back:
On the way back to the airport in the Tarago we listened to music and talked. When we got to the airport we had to wait a while because we were a bit early so we all got a drink and something to eat. We were the first ones to board the plane because Josh needed extra time to get to his seat. Josh originally wasn't going to sit next to us because another person had booked the window seat. The person that was meant to sit on the window seat didn't show up so Josh got to sit next to us for the flight home.

When we had arrived at the Adelaide airport we were asked if we would like to go in to the cockpit. We accepted the invite and waited until everyone got off. In the cockpit there  were  buttons, gauges and a  large  window so  they

could see where they were going. It could accommodate 2 people, the captain and the flight assistant. After our tour we collected our luggage and were greeted by our parents.

Australian War Memorial
On Wednesday we went to the Australian War Memorial. It was really great being able to look at all of the wartime weapons and clothing and seeing photos and pictures of all of the people who gave their lives to fight for Australia and its people. It was really moving and made you very proud to be an Australian. On one level there were many fighter planes and vehicles, we got to experience a video showing us the war from a fighter pilots view, it was really loud and gripping it felt like you were there. After the video and a look around we ventured outside where we found the donation pool with the eternal flame. We went up a few stairs to a wall that displayed all of the soldiers' names in alphabetical order that had lost their lives at war. The wall had many poppies in it, many from the families who have lost their loved ones. We moved on until we came to a huge dome in which lay the grave of the Unknown Soldier, the walls displayed beautiful stained glass windows in which were written some words like courage and bravery to name a few. I placed a poppy on the grave to pay tribute to all of the soldiers, which was very touching. I will never forget this wonderful experience.

Old Parliament House!
On Tuesday we went to Old Parliament House. First we went into Kings Hall and put white gloves on because there are oils on your skin that can damage old artefacts. We walked into the House of Representatives and sat down in the chairs. Our guides talked us through the room and we were given an opportunity to take some photos. Mostly everything in the room was green because Australia adapted the colours from England's Parliament House. Then James dressed up as Speaker and soon after Scott Patterson, Mitchell Hutchins and I were taken to a little room where we put on our costumes. Scott was the Usher, Mitchell was Prince Phillip and I was the Queen. I had to put on this really heavy dress, it was a copy of the Queen's dress when she came to visit parliament.  Scott and I had to make a speech. I really enjoyed Old Parliament House it was great. I loved Canberra and I just had heaps of fun and learnt so much. I will never forget all the amazing experiences I enjoyed, and with all my friends. Canberra was so interesting and was full of so many things to see and do that I hope one day you will get the same amazing opportunity as I did.

The Royal Australian Mint, by Janice Davidson
We boarded the bus that we, 50 year 6 and 7 students and 5 adults had travelled in, over
1100 kms in the previous night from Adelaide to Canberra. We arrived at the Royal Australian Mint a tall, long building with the Australian Coat of Arms featured at the entrance. We entered the foyer, a room with display cases filled with coins of all different shapes and sizes. On one wall there are more coins in chronological order and available for purchase. We walk down the corridor next to the desk to an elevator that takes us up to the second floor. We could see conveyor belts, truckloads of coins, bucketfuls of notes, and where the workers made the coins. While we were there we had the chance to make our own dollar coin. Coins can commemorate different events like the Commonwealth Games and other commonwealth ceremonies. The coin I made recognised the 50th anniversary of television in Australia. I very much enjoyed the amazing experience, the hilarious fun and the fantastic memories.

FRIENDS OF PANALATINGA

Recently the Friends Group met to discuss the future directions of the Reserve project next to our school.  We met with our Catchment Board Representative, Caroline Woods and have decided to meet again on Saturday June 3rd in my room, room 10 at 1:00 pm to look closer at where we are heading, what involvement there will be from both the Onkaparinga Council and our group and what we can do in the immediate time frame.

Text Box: We are eager to have more families involved and would love to have YOU join us for any amount of time that you can spare.  We value whole family input as this then fosters interest and understanding with the children as well as the adults.

On a positive note too, we have just won a grant from the Council for $700 to purchase a whipper snipper and accompanying equipment for ongoing maintenance in the Reserve.  Thanks to Jackie Brettig for writing such a great submission.

On Friday June 2nd, we will be planting trees for World Environment Day.  The three Year 3 and 3 /4 classes will plant out about 400 plants in the Reserve and we would love some help from interested adults.  This could be a great way to have a look at the Reserve  to  see  the  terrific  work  already

done and to see how you could become involved.  The next day we will meet and then go around the site to check on the planting.

PLEASE consider joining us!!!

Helen Whisson (on behalf of the Friends of Panalatinga)

SOUTHERN CHESS LEAGUE

An exciting start to the season with our Happy Valley Senior and Junior teams performing well.

Our first round on May 9 saw the Senior Team win 4-1 and the Juniors 3-2 victors!

The second round on May 23 was a tougher assignment with the Juniors fighting out a team draw, but the Seniors went down 2-3 to the powerful Raging Rooks from Pilgrim School.

Jack Price remains undefeated, despite playing in position one with the seniors... the toughest seat in the house!

Our next gathering is  Tuesday June 6 for the popular "Spot the Mate" night, where players will be confronted by dozens of games with just one move to check mate. It's a fun night for all, including parents! "Spot the Mate" starts at 7pm Woodcroft College for both Seniors and Juniors.
