PLEASE NOTE
Early Dismissal at 2:15 pm. on the last day of term Friday July 7th.
First day of term is Monday July 24th.
Please remember that the new Reception children will start school on Wednesday July 26th.

Moving Schools?
We would appreciate parents notifying the school as soon as possible if you know that your child /children will be moving to a different school, state etc.  This is extremely important as we start to estimate classes and teacher numbers for the following year, as we have already had to do this term.

Starting in 2007 DECS will be using a new funding model to staff schools. On examination of this model if we are not as clear as possible about enrolments we could have to find a considerable amount of money to top up teacher salary.

  • Therefore we would like to know now of any children leaving during this year or at the end of the year [excluding year 7s].

  • Similarly if you have or know of any children starting school here in 2007, could you please enrol them as soon as possible.

Welcome
We are very thrilled to be able to welcome Liz Loveday to our teaching staff at Happy Valley. Liz has been appointed for Terms 3 and 4 to take the new reception class, which will be in Unit 5. Liz is already well known at Happy Valley and we know that our parents are very happy to have her.

Holiday School Safety
It is unfortunate to have to say that during the school holidays, schools can be the target for different forms of vandalism.

Could we please encourage families when possible to keep an eye out – come for a walk through the property, drive along Greenbriar Ave especially at night. If anything unusual is seen please report it to police on 131444. Many thanks.

Four Corners - DVD
As per our last newsletter these DVDs will be coming home with your child on or before this Friday

SAPSASA CROSS COUNTRY STATE DAY

On Friday June 16th, fifteen dedicated students participated in the SAPSASA Cross Country State Day in and around the parklands at Victoria Park. This is the second largest athletics event in the state with some 4000 participants. Only the City-Bay Fun Run attracts more competitors.

The Happy Valley students were well prepared for the day having competed in two races previously and training three mornings a week since late in term one. Every one of our runners can be proud of their effort and achievement regardless of their final placing.

Our most successful competitors were Caleb Daniels who won Gold for his first place in the ten year old boys division two race, Ben Richardson -- silver in the twelve year old boys div 2, Leah Wright -- 9th in the twelve year old girls div 1and Jake Stratton -- 15th in the 10 year old boys div 2. (Division one runners ran 3km and division two runners ran 2km.)

All of the runners have been wonderfully supported by their parents throughout the running season and I thank the mums and dads for their efforts.

EDIBLE GARDEN

A Request
To help in our Edible Garden as well as in numerous other chores around the school, it would be GREAT if someone was able to donate an old, but still serviceable wheel barrow. We are about to have a big push in

several areas that would use it as we get our School Forum Groups under way.

The Edible Garden, Chook Shed, Environment and Gardening Groups would all find it a real help and it would be in constant demand.

Please check your sheds or see if relatives or friends are clearing our sheds.  Thankyou
                                                                  Helen Whisson

PARENTS AS PARTNERS

A group of parents has just completed a great 5 weeks participating in "Parents as Partners". Topics covered included how children learn, speaking and listening, reading, writing and spelling as well as mathematics. The parents had lots of fun and laughs, as well as learning!

Quotes from participants' feedback.
"I found all sessions very useful. It has made me realise that in some situations I have done well and in some situations, not so well. This will benefit my child’s learning."

Parents as Partners should "be compulsory for new starters as it is beneficial to understand the different ways of teaching."

OSHC

There are still vacancies during Vacation Care.  If any care is needed please contact us as soon as possible.

FAMILY LIFE SA PROGRAMME

For children with their parents/caregivers at Happy Valley School on Wednesday 23rd August 2006,
6:45 – 9:45 pm "How We Began" 7 -- 9 years old
8:00 - 9:00 pm "Puberty Clues" 10 -- 12 years old

More information in the next newsletter.

Why Sexuality Education??

Does your child have access to
TV?, VIDEO PLAYER?, RADIO?, MAGAZINES?, FRIENDS?,
If the answer is YES to any of these, then your child is receiving an education in Sexuality.

BUT IS IT THE TYPE OF EDUCATION/INFORMATION you want them to have?

Parent/caregivers are the best source of information for our young people because they are a constant in the young person's life.  School lessons are great and a necessity.  Have your children told you, recently, what they've learnt at school in the Sexuality Education lessons?

Do you think you can talk with your child/children as much as you would like about their personal development?

Family Life provides a forum that is comfortable where you can give your undivided attention to your child/ren.  It is a time when with the leadership of a sensitive educator yo can enhance your child/ren's learning experience, and add to their positive attitudes toward sexuality, the miracle of life and their own changing bodies.

Family Life will be visiting your school soon.
WHY NOT GIVE Family Life A TRY.

SOME COMMENTS FROM PARTICIPANTS
"I was so tired this afternoon I didn’t really want to come out.  My child persisted and here we are.  I’m so glad we came, we’ve decided to stay on to both sessions."
"My child didn't want to come along but I thought I would like her to.  She's enjoyed it so much she's really glad she came."
"I've brought my older kids along and got so much out of it that I've brought along my youngest."

ART ACTIVITIES -- COME 'N TRY

The Education sub-committee are offering another chance for adults to take part in a two-week workshop during Term 3.  You must be available for both sessions, which will be held at 7:15pm – 9:15pm on Monday 31st July and Monday 7th August.

Debby-Haskard Strauss will be taking the workshop in her studio in Unit 4, teaching you how to make a lino cut or a

wood cut.  You will be shown how to create a design, transfer it onto your block, shown how to curve and then print your image, which can be used for cards, letterheads or as a picture to frame.

Please return the expression of interest to the front office as soon as possible.

SOUTHERN CHESS LEAGUE

Season update.
Four rounds have already been played this season, and our Junior and Senior teams are performing very well.  Only a couple of points separate the top five teams in each division.

Our Juniors have won two, drawn one and lost one. Two players, Ben Schofield and Nathanael Hamilton have yet to drop games, fighting out a win each and three stalemates each!

The Seniors have scored two comprehensive victories and two narrow losses. Jack Price and Laura Smith have won three games each.

In round three, Jack's game was so close it came down to the advice of an independent state chess expert. Unfortunately for us, Jack's worthy opponent was declared the winner on a technicality, four days after the event!

Next round is Tuesday August 1st at Woodcroft College. Juniors to be seated at 6:15pm, Seniors 7:15pm.
