Welcome to our new Reception children

We would like to welcome our 13 new reception children who started school last Wednesday in Unit 5 with Liz Loveday. The children who started school for the first time were Kiera Anderson, Jacob Blacker, Sophie Champion, Shannon Fewster, Nicola Freeman, Eirenn Harkness, Nicholas Ielasi, Hayden Kay, Laura Letheby, Josh Martin, Angus Smelter, Logan Webb and Olivia Wheeler.

A very special welcome back, too, to Liz Loveday -- we are really thrilled to have her again at Happy Valley

New Principal For Happy Valley
I am very pleased to announce that a decision has been made in relation to the Principal's position.

Ms Kylie Raymond has been appointed to commence here at the beginning of 2007. The position is for 7 years.

Kylie is very excited about coming to Happy Valley and has already visited the school and been introduced to our staff and students.

She is coming to us from Kangarilla PS where she has been the Principal for the last 5 & 1/2 years. Prior to this she was the Deputy Principal at Hallett Cove South Primary School.

I am really pleased that the announcement has been made in plenty of time to allow us to have a very smooth handover.

Guide Dogs
Two of our Happy Valley families have recently become "Puppy Raisers" for the Guide Dogs Association. This means, that for the next 12 months, they will be responsible, with the Association, for the care and training of these 2 pups. Consequently, the pups will be seen at school quite frequently and will be recognisable by a red coat and tag. Guide dogs are able to enter any premises and therefore our "No Dogs" rule will not apply to them.

Literacy and Numeracy State Tests
During next week these tests will be conducted for Years 3, 5 and 7 students. The year 3 tests will be conducted over 3 days [Tues -- Thursday]. This is a change from the past and acknowledges the needs of this younger group of students. For Years 5 and 7 tests will be on Wednesday and Thursday.

Thank you also to the families who have provided very valuable feedback to the Healthy Eating Committee. This group will be meeting next Wednesday so any other comments received before then would be appreciated.

BOYS AND LEARNING

During this term we will be including three segments from this article.

This article comes from the 2002 Boys Education public lecture by Dr Ian Lillico, Churchill Fellow and from the ACER (Australian Council for Educational Research) Research Developments Newsletter No 10, Winter 2003.

There has been growing public interest about the needs of boys, fuelled in part by the statistics regarding youth suicide and the differences in the retention and literacy rates of boys and girls.  This has led to the question:  What can we do as teachers and as parents to help boys achieve their potential?  What are the needs and natures of boys and how can we help them at school and at home?

Boys of all ages, and particularly those approaching adolescence, need:

  • to be cool (or at least to be seen to be cool)

  • to belong

  • to take risks/experiment

  •  to feel in control

Boys are more likely to fear failure and:

  •  set unrealistically low expectations to cushion themselves against failure.  It's important that as adults we don't mix negatives with positives when we give feedback or praise.  We need to help boys tackle their fear of making mistakes and to understand that we all learn from mistakes.

  • believe that every test is a test of their worth as a person.   As adults we can foster the need to achieve their own goals not to 'beat' others.

EDUCATION SUB COMMITTEE NEWS

"Boys Behaving Badly?" Workshop
The Education subcommittee has organised a workshop for parents on "Boys Behaving Badly?".

When: Wednesday August 30th.
Time: 7.00 -- 9.00pm.

Our presenter will be Linda Hale. Linda was the teacher of the boys' class at Braeview prior to her current position, and has done a lot of work around boys and their learning. More information will be sent home next newsletter, but put this date in your diaries now!

STRANGER DANGER

From time to time we are informed by the District Office when attempted offences towards children and youth occur within our area.

Our School Policy is that all staff are informed of the incident.  The students are reminded, through class discussion and teacher information as relevant to the age group, for the need to take extreme care when travelling to and from school and at other times and to report any suspicious behaviour to parents or the school.

Please reinforce this message strongly with your children.

PEDAL PRIX -- 6 HOUR RACE

On the 30th of July on Sunday we had the 6-hour race at Victoria Park for pedal prix.  There was a girl’s bike (Vortex)

and a boy's bike (Viper). The race started at 10:00am and ended at 4:00pm. Most riders rode a total of 4 laps of the track, 2 laps at a time except for the last hour when each rider rode one lap each. Overall the

Vortex finished 143rd and the Viper came 116th out of about 250 pedal prix bikes.

SOUTHERN CHESS LEAGUE

In one of the tightest competitions in years the Juniors went into the round tied with two other teams for fourth place.  They went down narrowly 2 -- 3.  Special mention to Shane Martin who made it three wins in a row to keep his medal hopes alive.

The seniors played Pimpala, with whom they were tied for second.  Happy Valley scraped in 3 -- 2.  It all came down to Luke Szeitz, who snatched a plucky victory after an hour-long fight, was decided with the time clock.

Coming up:
Tuesday August 15th
.  Lightning Carnival for ALL senior players only.  Sunrise Christian School, Pimpala Road.  Players MUST be there NO LATER than 6:45 for a 7pm start.
Thursday August 17th.  Simul Night.  A handful of the state's top players will take on all juniors and seniors at the same time.  Woodcroft College, Bains Road. 7pm sharp.  Please bring a standard chess set.

SPORT

Football
It has been a great 9 weeks of Football so far with all teams having convincing wins.

It has been good to see some parents helping out when the games are played at Happy Valley, but it still seems that the same parents are in the canteen. These parents would like to watch their child play as well.

I have been very impressed with the children's attitudes towards football this year, WELL DONE.  The children that have been asked to play for the other team have shown great sportsmanship. Thank you. Other schools and the Panther League have praised Happy Valley for this.

Big congratulations to 6/7's as they made it into the finals of the SAPSASA and WON.  They have also played the last 9 games undefeated, which has earned them the bragging rights to have our school's name placed on the PREMIER'S SHIELD.  The team played off for the best school in Adelaide but unfortunately, they were beaten by Magill (Sturt Zone), which were a better team on the day.  All the boys and girls who played can hold their heads high as we all congratulate you.  In the history of the School Football this has been a first time achievement. Well Done.

South Adelaide Mini League will be played this Sunday 6th August.  South Adelaide V Eagles

I would also like to congratulate Jack Reynolds on winning the best and fairest player in the Development Squad that went to Diamond Valley.  WELL DONE Jack.

I will be advising in the next newsletter the date our presentations will be held, and what Coaches will be required for next season.
