ANSWERING MACHINE

An answering machine has now been connected to our school phone. We would really appreciate it if students are going to be absent that parents leave a message before 8.00am with the details. The less time our staff spend in calling parents means the more time we have to support students and teachers with our learning programmes. Thank You.

STUDENT FREE DAY AND SCHOOL CLOSURE
We provided this advice last term so we hope that you have the following dates in your diaries.
Student Free Day                      Thursday 7th September

BOYS AND LEARNING
Following on from the first segment in our last newsletter, this is the second from the article 2002 Boys Education public lecture by Dr Ian Lillico, Churchill Fellow and from the ACER (Australian Council for Educational Research) Research Developments Newsletter No 10, Winter 2003.

Boys need accurate information and unobtrusive support from parents and teachers with:

time management, particularly in planning their tasks over time.  This is why teachers set tasks and projects over time frames of a week or more.
resource management.  This is to do with organising the materials they will need for a task.  Checklists are very helpful for some boys.
stress management.  This relates to helping boys set realistic expectations, goals and timelines.
fatigue management.  Boys have a tendency to 'over-exert', playing hard until they drop.  Wise parents manage the activity levels of their sons and talk openly about choices they make in managing the child's fatigue.  This helps boys recognise their own symptoms and learn to plan ahead.
finance management.  There are some frightening statistics around about mobile phone debt among young people.  Planning the spending of pocket money and the saving for desired items will be great for mathematical as well as financial development!

CHILDREN'S WRITING

The children in Mrs Bailey's Yr. 1/2 class have been learning about Fairy Tales.  The children read a Big Book about Cinderella, and learnt about writing a diary. The children then wrote a "Cinderella's Diary" about the day after the ball.  Here are some of their diary entries.

Dear Diary,
The ball has passed.  I had such a wonderful time with the Prince. I wonder if he will every find me?  I lost my slipper at the ball.  I wonder if he has found it?  At the ball I actually got to dance with the Prince.  Isn't amazing?  When the clock struck 12, I only just remembered what my fairy godmother said.  I wish I could dance with him again.

I kept my glass slipper in my wall with my jewellery box.  My stepmother and stepsisters don't even know about me going to the ball anyway.  They are so furious that they didn't get a chance to dance with the Prince.  As soon as they got home they made me go to bed.  It is just not fair.

By Elenore

Dear Diary,
I wish I did not have those mean stepsisters and the ball was wonderful.  However, everything is back to normal and I lost a glass slipper but I had the other one to myself.

By Jake

Dear Diary,
I went to the ball.  Everyone thought I was a Princess from another town.  The Prince asked me to dance.  My stepmother was embarrassed because she wanted her girls to dance with the Prince.  My fairy godmother's magic disappeared when I got home. The next day a messenger came to see who's lost a glass slipper.  It was mine.

By Tyson

Dear Diary,
Last night I went to the royal ball.  I had to get my stepsisters ready as usual.  I asked if I could go to the ball.  My stepmother thought I was being ridiculous.

When they went to the ball, I was feeling sad.  A kind looking woman appeared.  She said to me, "what's wrong dear?"  She told me what to get.  I had to get a lizard, a pumpkin and six mice.  She turned my ugly dress into a gold dressing gown and my old yucky slippers into pretty glass slippers.  Then I was ready to go to the ball.  Before I went, she told me to come home at midnight.  Then I set off.

The Prince just got there when I did.  He was just about to ask someone when I walked in.  He picked me and we danced all night.  When the clock struck twelve I ran out and when I got home the magic stopped but I lost a glass slipper.  I kept the other glass slipper.

The messenger came to me and gave me the glass slipper to try on and it fitted me and I became princess.

EDIBLE GARDEN

Mrs Johnson's class have harvested some vegetables from their plot in the Edible Garden.  Using the cauliflower and parsley they had grown, they made cauliflower fritters.  All the students tried the fritters and loved them.

Thank you to all the parents who helped with the cooking and a big thank you to Michelle Rowe for all the time and effort she puts into her children's class plots.

Here are some reports from the children about their cooking session.

First we had to put our names on the plate and then we lined up and got our fritters.  We grew the cauliflower and the parsley in our garden.  The cauliflower fritters were very nice.  I ate them with tomato sauce.

By Sacha

I thought that the cooking was nice and that it was the vegetables that made it yummy.  The cauliflower came from the vegetables that we grew in the edible garden.  The best bit was eating the cauliflower fritters.

By Taylah

Today we made cauliflower fritters and I liked it.  I have never had one before.  The cauliflower came from the edible garden.  The ingredients were 850g. of cauliflower, 2 cups of self raising flour, 1 garlic clove crushed, 1/4 cup of flat leaf parsley leaves chopped, 1 cup grated cheese, 2 eggs lightly beaten, olive oil for shallow frying and fruit chutney to serve.

By Daniel F.

Today we made cauliflower fritters.  After we made them we got to try one.  The cauliflower came from the edible garden.  Before we got to eat some we had to put our name on our plate.  Then they got put on our plate.  Then we let them cool down before we ate them.

SPORT

SAPSASA NETBALL
We would like to say thank you to our coach, Carol Mitic and to everyone who played in our Netball team.  We had a great time playing and if we could we would like to say thank you to Mr. Francis for organising all of our matches.  Thank you also to the parents that came to our games.  The boys that played for our team were Jack Reynolds, Scott Paterson, James Canny, Ben Wilden, Michael Ross, Mitchell McDonald, Tom Hall, Adrian Mitic and Cale Hutchings.  We ended up winning the SAPSASA Knockout Competition and got a medal each and a shield for the school.

OUT OF SCHOOL HOURS NETBALL
The netball season is over half way through and it is great to see how much all the girls have learnt.  We have two teams this year, a year 6 team and a team in the year 5 competitions.

The year sixes are having a very successful year having only lost one game.  The girls are having a great time, (except maybe the morning it rained the whole time) and their skills have improved noticeably.

The team in the year five competitions is a mix of year fives and year threes so they have been struggling with goals against the bigger girls.  And to make things a little more complicated, the team has had players with both broken arms and feet!!  Both the girls and parents enthusiasm has been wonderful though.   And hopefully next year we will have even more players and can field another team in a more suitable age group.

HAPPY VALLEY FOOTBALL
It has been a great season for football; plenty of wins and a few losses. Only two games remaining, so if you haven't seen your child play this season this is your last chance to see them in action.

The 6/7s are playing their SAPSASA Grand Final on Friday out at St Peters College. If any parents are available for transport, can you please ring me and I will contact their coach and advise him of who will be transporting the children.

Presentation will be held at the School on the 23rd September at 11.00am. Some parents have been going around to other parents on game days looking for a donation towards the Coach's presents. Please give them a donation, as Coaches are hard to come by.

Again a big THANK YOU

RUGBY CARNIVAL REPORT
Last term, seven year 7 students participated in a rugby carnival at the Hallett Cove R -- 12 School.  We left the school car park at 9:00am sharp to get to the oval by 9:15am.  First we went to Hallett Cove Sports Park.  It was meant to be there according to Mr Francis but he was wrong. It was actually at Hallett Cove R -- 12.

When we finally arrived at the R -- 12 School, we put on our Guernseys that they supplied for us.  Then we got straight into our first match against Braeview A.  The match went for 16 minutes and we won 32 - 18!  When we finished we had a 5-minute break, then we played Braeview 1.  We defeated them 22 - 16.  We had 10 minutes off before the next game.

We played Coorara A who we also defeated 22 - 16.  After this we had a 50-minute break when we watched other teams play and practised for our next games.  We then played Hallett Cove and we also won that game 22 - 26.  40 minutes after that we played Coorara 1 and we won that one also.  The score was 28 - 12.

We went into the grand final and in the grand final we lost to Coorara A that we had beaten before.  The score was 12 - 24.  We did really well considering we only had seven players.  Every other team had at least nine players.

At the end we had a presentation and we were given a runner up trophy.  Afterwards Scott, Jack P and Dylan were given a sportsmanship award, which was a little soft rugby ball and Mitchell H., Rowan and Michael R. received an invitation to try out for state rugby. We arrived back at school at 2:45pm.
