WORLD TEACHERS' DAY FRIDAY 27TH OCTOBER 2006
To the school community
World Teachers' Day is almost upon us -- the perfect time to recognise and celebrate the work of teachers and school principals across Australia.

Teaching Australia: the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership is taking the opportunity of this special day to urge school communities to take stock of the wonderful work teachers do in laying the foundation for a society that is rich in values, skills and achievement of all kinds.  Teachers play a vital role in equipping young people with the skills and confidence they need to achieve the most in life.  Their deep professional commitment to the development and well-being of students is the hallmark of their practice.

We encourage students to commemorate this important day with their teachers.  Think of the teachers who have really made a difference this year, helping you grow in confidence and capacities, and say 'thank you'.

We urge parents and members of the school community to show their appreciation for the ongoing contribution of teachers and principals to the well-being of Australia's young people and the future of our country.

Teaching Australia -- Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership Ltd.

CANCELLATION -- PARENT WORKSHOP ON "BULLYING AND HARASSMENT"
Please Note: We have had to cancel the Parent Workshop on "Bullying and Harassment", which was to be held this evening from 7.00 -- 9.00pm. Unfortunately we received too few parent replies to be able to run this workshop.

PARKING IN GREENBRIAR AVE.
Parking officers have attended from the Onkaparinga Council in Greenbriar Ave. They have asked that we remind parents that this is a DROP-OFF ZONE ONLY. This means parents should not be more than 3 metres away from their car and that their car is not parked there for longer than 2 minutes even if the driver is in the car.  Parking on the opposite side of the road is prohibited as there is a continuous yellow line.  If you need further clarification, please contact the City of Onkaparinga Council.

WELCOME TO OUR NEW CHILDREN

They are Penny, Serena, Ashton, Tyson, Ian, Joshua, Jason, Georgia, Kyra, Zane, Tyler, Mikaela, Jasmine and Tyson. A warm welcome too, to James and Michael who have also moved to Happy Valley this term, into Mrs Bailey's and Miss Strachan's classes.

OUR FRIENDLY SCHOOL

Communicating
effectively
with your children

Over the next few weeks we will feature articles that may help you talk with your children about bullying.  It is important to discuss bullying with your children on a regular basis.  Regular communication with a person they trust and respect will help them form their own opinions and beliefs about bullying.  Your children will also feel more comfortable telling you if they are being bullied.

Why not try some of the following ideas to improve the way you talk with your children.

Sit shoulder to shoulder or walk with your child as you talk.

  • Talking face to face can be quite confrontational, particularly for boys.

  • Try asking questions such as "What did you do today?" or "What would you like for breakfast?".  These types of questions encourage discussion between you and your child.

Talk with your children about what to do rather than what not to do.

  • It is common for us to focus on poor behaviour, such as "don't step in that puddle" or "stop swinging on your chair".

  • Using positive language allows you to tell your children what you would like them to do rather than what you don't want them to do.

  • Try rewording negative statements to positive statements such as "step over the puddle" or "please put the chair legs on the floor".

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC SERVICE
WORKSHOP

On Tuesday we went to the Adelaide Show Grounds to play nine songs in the Instrumental Music Service Workshop with another 168 students from country and metropolitan areas.  We played Electric Bass Guitar and Alto Saxophone whilst other students played Trombones, Trumpets, Flutes, Bass and normal Clarinets.  Music teachers played instruments and also conducted during the workshop.

During the days we were away we practised songs like 'Funkytown', 'The Medallion Calls' (From Pirates of the Caribbean) and 'Wallace and Gromit.'  Overall it was a fantastic experience!  We would both like to thank Ms. Williams, Steve Williams and Steve King (our instrumental teachers), and our parents for their help in many ways.

"BUSHWAHZEE"

Our school will be having a "Special Event" on Thursday, November 16th (Week 5). A musical group called "Bushwahzee" will spend the whole day at Happy Valley. The group will begin by performing for the whole school. They will then spend the day running workshops with all classes.

We then invite all families to return to school from 4.30pm. The fundraising sub-committee is organising a barbeque and also tea, coffee and drinks, from 4.30 -- 5.15pm. We will have to finish serving food at 5.15 in readiness for a performance. At 5.30, all children will showcase what their class has learnt during the day. The evening should conclude at approximately 7.00pm. More information will be sent home soon.

HEALTHY LIFESTYLES WEEK
Is coming.......

During the week November 6-10th we will be holding a Healthy Lifestyles Week of activities as we did last year.  The format is similar to that followed previously, building on the feedback received from students and staff.

A full program will be distributed next week but some of the activities will include a whole school walk to Thalassa Park on Monday morning, sessions such as Relaxation, Tae Kwon Do, Pilates, Kinesiology and the "Giant Fruit Eat In" that will encourage students to be involved in healthy options.  The final Phys Add testing of all students will take place.  This will measure fitness and the effect of the Phys Add program that classes have participated in all year.  The 'Come 'n' Try' activities for Junior Primary and Primary students will include Rugby, Athletics, Dance, Soccer, SCUBA and Wheelchair sports.  It looks like it will be a fantastic week emphasising trying new challenges and 'having a go'.  Each class will be supplied with a pedometer to measure how far they walk each day.

We invite families including Grandparents to join in or observe on the Thursday 9:15-11:00am.  Classes may be doing sessions or other class work during that time. All visitors, including Grandparents, are invited to bring a piece of fruit to eat with the students during fruit eating time.

Parent Information Session
The Education subcommittee has invited a dietician, Karen Yapp, to run a parent information session about encouraging healthy eating for children. This session will be held during "Healthy Lifestyles Week:"

Date:    Thursday November 9th.
Time:    2.00 -- 3.00pm.
Place:   In the staff room.

A flyer will be sent home, giving more details and asking parents to return a tear-off slip indicating whether they will be attending.

UNDERSTANDING THE INTERNET

What are my children doing on the Internet?
Many parents feel that their children know more than they do about using the Internet.

For children aged 2 -- 7 years.
NetAlert has a free Internet safety education program available for young children at www.nettysworld.com.au
What parents can do:

  • Check out good sites for younger children -- you should be responsible for selecting the sites that children in this age group can visit

  • Very close supervision is strongly recommended

  • Select sites and set up bookmarks for very young users

  • Consider using 'safe zones' for this age group, particularly when they start school and can do more on their own

  • Limit email correspondence to a list of friends and family members you have approved

  • Use filters to limit accidental access to unsuitable material

For children aged 8 -- 11 years.
NetAlert has created a free Internet safety educational program for children aged 8 -- 12 years.  It is available from http://www.cyberquoll.com.au/hub.htm
What parents can do:

  • Be actively involved in your child's Internet use

  • Emphasise safe online behaviour and discuss why this is needed

  • Investigate any chat rooms or online clubs that your child wants to join to make sure they are legitimate

  • Consider using 'filters' to block access to Internet Relay Chat (IRC) and newsgroups

  • Discuss use of good cyber manners (Netiquette), just as you do for the real world

  • Place the computer in a public area of the home to supervise children's use

  • Use family-friendly search engines designed for children.

WIRRAWAY CAMP

Our trip to Wirraway was heaps good.  We came to school on the Monday.  We got on the bus at 9.30 and took off in to the hills up to Strathalbyn.  We stopped at the park, got off the bus and had recess.  Wes fed the ducks and all the others ran around and had fun.  After we had our recess we got on the bus and drove just out of Strathalbyn to Wirraway Camp site.

After the opening meeting with Peter, Steve, Sara, Andy, Min, Liz, Hannah and Tania, we had free time to check out the place and all the equipment around the place.  They had a cool Snack Bar and three Eight Ball tables and two Table Tennis tables.  It was all in the main Stable with chairs and a projector where they had shows and announcements.

That night we had Shepherds Pie for tea and Apple Crumble for dessert which I reckon was the best Apple Crumble I've ever had.

WIRRAWAY CAMP

Excerpts from my diary
Tuesday 17th October.
At 6.30am I woke up so I had a shower.  Then I got dressed ready to go to breakfast.  Breakfast was at 8.00am.  We had cheese on toast, normal toast and cereal.  During breakfast Steve said if we would like to bring in horses we had to go down to the tack shed after breakfast.

At 8.45 I headed down to the tack shed.  The horse I brought in was Bear.  After a while the bell rang so we had to go to the main shed.  Then we started our morning activities.  The activities were horse riding, swimming and going on the trampolines.

After the activities we had a meeting.  At the meeting there was another horse shoe competition.  After the meeting we had lunch.  For lunch we had hamburgers.

After lunch we free time.  At 2.00pm the snack bar was open.  Then the bell rang for activities.

The activities were flying fox, the Tarzan rope, and archery and then we got to go for a swim.  After it was free time.  After the meeting we had lunch.  For lunch we had hamburgers.

SCHOOL DENTAL SERVICE

The following is a letter from Dr. Martin Dooland, Executive Director, S.A. Dental Service.

Dear Parents,
You may be aware that the recent State Budget included a reference to copayments in the School Dental Service.

Currently a $35 annual fee is charged to secondary school children who are not dependants of, or holders of Health Care cards or School Cards.

Under the changes announced in the Budget fees in the School Dental Service will change as from January 1st 2007.

As currently occurs, all children who are dependants of, or holders of Health Care Cards, Pensioner Concession Cards or School Cards, will continue to receive free dental care through the School Dental Service.

However, from January 1st 2007, a $35 fee per course of care will be charged to all children, including primary and preschool children, accessing the School Dental Service who are not dependants of, or holders of Health Care Cards, Pensioner Concession Cards or School Cards.

The first and last courses of care for all children accessing dental care through the School Dental Service will be free, regardless of if a relevant card is held or not.

Further information will be provided to parents before their children's next examination.  However should parents have any concerns or queries, please contact the SA Dental Service Copayment Hotline on 82229064.

WIRRAWAY CAMP

When we got to Wirraway we got sorted into groups for our dorms. Then we had lunch.  For lunch we had a ham sandwich.  After lunch we had free time.  I played pool for a while then the bell rang which means we have to sit down in the stable.  There Peter talked for a while.  After that the bell rang for activities.  First my group did rock climbing and I finished number six.  Then we did the tope course.  I got 295 but Adam won the whole thing.
