Flyers have been sent home with information about this special whole school event. The flyer contains information about the event as well a tear-off slip on which families need to indicate whether they will be having the barbeque tea and also whether they would be willing to make a donation of a cake or slice to be offered for sale with tea and coffee. Please return the tear-off slip as soon as possible.   The canteen will also be open -- iceblocks and icecreams will be available.

For this year, Bushwahzee will replace our Christmas Night which, in previous years, has been in Week 9.

PLANNING FOR 2007
We did ask for this information last term but just in case you have overlooked this could you please let us know if you have children who will not be at Happy Valley in 2007 [excluding year 7s].

If you know of any other families who will have children starting here next year could you please encourage them to enrol?  Many thanks

GRANDPARENTS' DAY

Many thanks to the grandparents who came to take part in our "Grandparents' Day" this morning. We hope that you had a really great time.

FUNDRAISING -- CHRISTMAS RAFFLE

Our Christmas Raffle will be launched on our Bushwahzee Bush Christmas Night on Thursday November 16th. It will be drawn during Week 9. There will be a number of prizes, including hampers. We will be asking all classes to collect donations for the hampers over the next weeks. Each class will be asked to bring "items" for the hampers around a theme, for example, toiletries, biscuits, Christmas food.

The fundraising committee will then assemble the hampers. Your child will be bringing home a note within the next few days with information about the class's theme. Please send your donations to the classroom and they will be collected from the room.  Many thanks.

OUR FRIENDLY SCHOOL

Talking with your
children
about being bullied

Just over 60% of children who were bullied in Western Australian schools reported they told someone after they were bullied.  This means almost 40% of children who were bullied told no-one. Children often think that talking about a bullying incident is like 'dobbing' on one another.

'Dobbing' is when a person tries to get attention or to get someone else into trouble.

'Asking for help' is when someone feels the situation is out of their control and they are unable to deal with it alone. If anyone sees someone else in this situation they should also ask for help.

What are children learning to do at school if they are bullied?
Children of all ages at our school are being taught through the classroom curriculum that:
When I have a problem I can:
  • Try to stand up for myself in
    a positive way;

  • Try to talk with the person I am having a problem with;

  • Walk away and ignore the
    person completely;

  • Get help from a teacher or
    another person I trust;

  • Ignore the situation and keep playing or working;
  • Talk to a friend to get some ideas to help me make a decision; or

  • Try coming to an agreement with the other person.

You can reinforce these messages by discussing them with your children at home.

EXCURSION TO ASIAN VILLAGE

Mrs Saunders' and Miss Strachan's classes had a great excursion to the Asian Village.  They experienced life in a different culture with many "hands on" activities through the day.

The children ground wheat to make flour.

This is how the village people transport water to use for washing and in their gardens.

The Asian Village teaching staff explained different aspects of Village life in different regions of Asia.

FOOD DONATIONS

We are again asking families to make a donation of cans of food, or other non-perishable food items, especially food items suitable for Christmas. These donations will be passed on to needy families through the Rotary Club at Christmas time. Any donations can be brought to school and will be held until Week 9.

LUNCH BOXES

As the warmer weather is approaching we often have queries about school lunches. Teachers ask their students to bring lunches into the classroom, to avoid leaving food outside in the heat. Many of the children have "cold-pack" type lunch boxes which contain a frozen ice pack. We strongly recommend these as they ensure that food remains cold. It is a really good idea to avoid packing food, such as chicken and other cold meat, which is at risk of "going off".

EXCURSION TO THE URRBRAE FARM
TRAIL -- Mrs Lancaster/Mrs Johnson class

This is a recount of our excursion to the Urrbrae Farm Trail on Thursday 2nd November.

Our class was divided into four groups.  Mrs. Lancaster, Mrs. Freeman, Mrs. Till and Mrs. Phang each went with a group.  Each group was lead around by two or three Year 10 students.

We saw heaps of things!
We saw horses.  We got to sit on a student made horse.

We saw sheep.  Sheep are kept on farms for their wool and also for their meat.
We saw alpacas.  Some farmers keep alpacas on their farms to  protect  their  sheep  from  foxes.  Some  of  us  saw  the students shearing an alpaca.  Alpaca wool is warmer than wool from a sheep.
We saw different types of fish in the Aquaculture Centre.  We saw marron and barramundi.
We saw chickens.  Some chickens are kept for their eggs and some are fattened up for their meat.  The egg laying chickens at Urrbrae are happy chooks because they roam freely around a barn and chook yard.  We were shown how eggs are sorted according to their weight.
We saw pigs and piglets.  Pigs are kept on farms for their meat.  We get pork, ham and bacon from pigs.
We saw cows.  Most black and white cows are dairy cows.  Their milk is used to make cheese, butter and yoghurt.  Most black and most brown cows are kept on farms for their meat.
We saw a mother goat and her five kids.  Goats are kept on farms for their milk and also for their meat.
We went into the Honey Room.  Honey comes from bees.  We saw honeycomb and we got to taste some honey.
We saw some native Australian animals too.  We saw kangaroos and possums in a special yard that foxes and feral cats can't get into.  We saw hopping mice and bettongs in the Nocturnal House but the sugar gliders were asleep.
We got to sit on a tractor.
We saw grape vines.
The grapes from these vines are made into wine.

We had a great time at Urrbrae!
