BARB WILLIAMS IS LEAVING HAPPY VALLEY

Barb will be leaving Happy Valley after 21 years of dedicated service to the school.

To thank Barb for her extra long stint we are having a farewell function on Monday the 11th of December in the hall between 4.00pm & 6.00pm. Any parents or past parents who have had close connections with Barb are invited to attend. Please respond to Amelia or Lorraine if you are coming.

Please note that this is an adult only function. Students will be able to say goodbye during school time.

VOLUNTEER MORNING TEA
The quality of student learning and development at Happy Valley is enhanced by the support received from families and other members of the School Community throughout the year.  Much of this is done informally and also through organised programs such as LAP, sports coaching and managing, Canteen and Resource Centre assistance, various committees and classroom help to name a few.   To say thank you, the staff is organising a morning tea for our wonderful Volunteers on Tuesday December 5th at 10:30am in the Long Room.  We appreciate the hours put in on a voluntary basis and we know that these efforts support and help to maintain the positive culture of this school community.  So we would love to see you there to say thank you for your special assistance.

 BUSHWAHZEE
What a wonderful evening we all had last Thursday!  A big "Thankyou" to all those families who supported our special event, and joined in with the dances with their children

The Bushwahzee barbecue started at around 4:30pm.  Amelia Wright, Georgie Goldfinch and Jean and Kevin McDonald were getting it organised.  At about 5:00pm the Bushwahzee band started to play and everyone was setting up their chairs, tables and mats.  Some people didn't have the barbecue so they brought their own food.

At 5:30 the events started and heaps of the parents and grandparents were getting into it.  The Bushwahzee band got the parents to dance with their kids in a big circle.  Each class did an Australian Christmas song and the audience was clapping along with the beat.  The whole night was really great and everyone seemed to enjoy it.

GEMMA'S CLASS PET GOES TO THE BUSHWAHZEE

When Fry Frog came to my place, he came with me to the Bushwahzee and watched.  He enjoyed the show.  I sang, before I got up to demonstrate the Christmas Waltz.  Mum, Dad and Sharni clapped and cheered.  Everyone was having a ball at the Bushwahzee.  I was feeling a bit jealous when Sharni and Mum were dancing together, and I was still feeling jealous at the end of the dance.

We left early and arrived at home.  Mum took Fry to the U2 concert with her by accident, as he was still in her bag from the Bushwahzee.  Not only did he get to see one big concert, but two!  But he really enjoyed Bono's talk about one world and poverty in Africa.  It was awesome!

He was up really late and had a big sleep on the way home.  Dad was watching us while Mum was away at the U2 concert.  He liked the Bushwahzee best.

When Mum came back we were asleep in our beds.  I wrote this in the morning and I can't waste pen ink.  I hope you enjoyed this! Bye!

PS We rode back to school in the car and Fry had a great time last night.

On Thursday the 16th of November we had Bushwahzee.  Each group of classes had a dance or a bush song.  Our group the "drones" (Draper/Jones) performed the bush dances Strip the Willow and the Troika.  We liked Strip the Willow because we got to dance with lots of different people and we all had a turn to be the leaders.  It was great fun.

FUNDRAISING SUBCOMMITEE
BUSHWAHZEE THANK YOU

The Fundraising Subcommittee would like to thank those families who donated cakes, slices and other food items, to be sold with drinks, tea and coffee, both before and after the Bushwahzee performance. We were thrilled with the response, and were very busy, for which we were really pleased.

Thank you to all from the Fundraising Subcommittee.

CONGRATULATIONS  TO
SAPSASA Boys' Cricket

Last Friday our SAPSASA cricket team played Eden Hills Primary School. I was delighted to hear from the Principal of that school on Monday about the way Happy Valley conducted themselves. He said that "they were a pleasure to play against, showed a great sporting attitude and were well mannered."  Well done boys.

SHOE LACES

Can we please ask parents to assist us by making sure that their child can tie his / her own shoe laces? Firstly it is a safety issue and secondly this is a skill that they all should have before commencing school. It will also save parents and staff a lot of time in the long run for children to be able to do this independently.

PRINCIPAL'S AWARDS

Congratulations to the following students who have received Principal's Awards, for demonstrating our school values -- COOPERATION / LEARNING / COMMUNICATION / STRIVING FOR EXCELLENCE -- Aiden Whitmore, Daniel Rogers, Gemma Brandenburg, Jesse Chudleigh, Dylan Halse, Lachie Schofield, Ashleigh Paterson, Dayna Wilkins, Claire Davidson, Justin Szeitz, Gemma Brown, Anna Ellacott, Luke Till, Eden Williams, Jarrad Tregenza, Jas Mason-Vestris, Michaela Willshire and Maddy Gavin.

RAFFLE TICKETS

Tickets for the Christmas Raffle are now available. Some were sold on the night of Bushwahzee. Tickets will now be available from the school (50 cents a ticket). You may purchase them from the Front Office. Committee members will also have the tickets for sale around the school on some mornings. If parents would be willing to take a booklet of 10 tickets to sell to family members or at work places, please come and see Amelia in the Front Office. There will be quite a large number of prizes -- the first prize will be a coffee table and there will also be several hampers.

OUR FRIENDLY SCHOOL

Talking with your
children
if they are bullying
others
All children are capable of bullying at some time and it is important for parents to respond in a calm and helpful manner.

Encouraging your children not to bully others
Parents can:

  • Talk with your children about what is acceptable behaviour and what is not, e.g. "we should not tease people to make them feel bad";

  • Work together with your family to establish simple rules and expectations about how to treat each other amongst the family members;

  • Encourage and provide opportunities for your children to openly discuss bullying issues with the family;

  • Discuss friendship and help your children make friends by encouraging them to play with other children at school, at home or in the neighbourhood;

  • Invite other children over for visits and help your children make their guests feel welcome;

  • Encourage your children to share their things with other children they feel would enjoy them too; and

  • Improve your children's self-esteem by encouraging them to have a go at new activities and thinking about their abilities in a realistic way.

NON UNIFORM DAY

The Forum executive has decided to hold a "Non Uniform" Day on Wednesday of Week 9, December 13th. This time, we ask that, in lieu of a gold coin donation, children bring a can or packet of non perishable food to donate to needy families for Christmas. As explained in the last newsletter, the Rotary Club collects donations for needy families, during the last week of school. This way the children can be involved in this collection. The executive will make posters to deliver to classes in the next few days.

Please remember, clothing needs to be appropriate for school and to be Sun Safe i.e. no tank tops.

FOOD DONATIONS

We are again asking families to make a donation of cans of food, or other non-perishable food items, especially food items suitable for Christmas. These donations will be passed on to needy families through the Rotary Club at Christmas time. Any donations can be brought to school and will be held until Week 9.

VISIT OF DAVE HACKETT -- ILLUSTRATOR

As a result of our successful involvement in the MS Readathon and because we had a high retention rate of Happy Valley students participating, we were rewarded with a whole day visit from a children's Illustrator.  Consequently Dave Hackett was flown over from Sydney to work exclusively with Happy Valley Primary Students on Tuesday this week. His sessions involved demonstration of his skills, questioning and practical activities for the students.  He also showed several of the books he has illustrated.

Caleb and Deayana gave the following comments on this successful day.

 "Once you get the hang of it, you could use his ideas and you can also make up your own.  He taught me lots about drawing that I did not know before.  It’s your drawing and there are no rules.  I really enjoyed his session."

"I learnt that when it comes to drawing, it's easier than what it looks.  You can do it if you think you can.  He taught me how to draw really cool pictures.  He's a really cool artist, knows a lot about drawing and could draw cartoons very quickly.  He got us to feel a lot more confident about drawing and helped us to describe what a 'creative drawing' really is.

"Thanks to Dave most of the Primary students have learnt how to draw fantastic cartoons."

If your child is interested in drawing and you would like to purchase any of Dave's 'how to draw books', see Barb Williams for a flyer and order form.

On Tuesday this week Josh Robertson was presented with another Novita award, this time for "Recreational and Sporting Achievement." The ceremony was at Regency Park. Josh also received a $200 award.

VIOLIN-A SUMMER CONCERT

On Tuesday 31st October at 7:30pm some of our Violin students played in "A Summer Concert" at Elder Hall in the city.

Their group was called "Fiddle Time Joggers" and they were dressed as joggers.  The group consisted of violin students from Happy Valley, Aberfoyle Park, Clarendon, Blackwood and Eden Hills Primary Schools, conducted by their violin teacher, Jennifer Eime.

They played three items, one with their group and two with The S.A. Primary Schools String Orchestra.  They played brilliantly.  We can be proud of them.  Many other schools played different items also.  All the schools that were involved  learnt and  rehearsed  their parts  separately, then

came together at the end of the concert for the last two items.  Around 200 students were on the stage.  What some of the students may have thought of as boring parts, sounded brilliant when brought together with all the other students.

It was amazing and sounded fantastic.  Well done to those students involved.

Kathy Bartel

Thanks also to our DECS Instrumental string teacher Jenny Eime who works with our students each week.

Please check our lost property located on the shelves adjacent to the Resource Centre.  Items not claimed by the end of the year will be passed onto an animal shelter for bedding.

23/11/06

Dear Parents

This letter is to inform you that at the Governing Council Meeting held on Monday, 6th November,  2006, the Materials and Services Charge and levies for 2007 was set at $275.00. The Education Minister has set the legally enforceable Materials and Services Charge for 2007 at $182.00. Attached is the verification required by The Education Department.

There is a voluntary Governing Council  approved Curriculum Levy of $30.00 which will assist the funding of the 2007 Site Learning Plan materials and an approved Information and Communication Technology Levy of  $18.00 to assist the funding of technology resources.  An excursion/performance levy of $45.00 includes Come Out activities for students commencing in term 1.  Students will be invoiced before the end of the school year.

Our Governing Council has set the fees for 2007 with the understanding that we need everyone's cooperation in the following ways.

  • We need all families paying their fees.

  • We need all families paying as early as possible, preferably by the end of Term 1.

  • We want all students to participate in school activities; however, Governing Council has endorsed the policy that students will not be included in excursion/other performances until their $45 levy has been paid.

The school will receive the full legally enforceable $182 materials and services charge for Happy Valley School School Card holders.  This means that school card holders will be asked to pay a total of $93 -- the approved Curriculum Levy, Information and Communication Technology Levy and the Performance Levy.

It is essential that families who are eligible for school card apply AS SOON AS POSSIBLE otherwise the school misses out on the government funding and those families will then incur the legally enforceable fee of $182.  School Card Application Forms need to be filled in every year.

The Governing Council has endorsed the use of debt collectors to recover outstanding materials and services charges.  We have tried hard to avoid this but in fairness to all those who do pay their fees we feel that this course of action needs to be taken, particularly when agreements are not met and letters and phone calls are not responded to.  If you have in the past, paid your full fees by instalments, we will continue to provide this flexibility during terms 1 and 2.

Prue Rosevear, Principal
