VOLUNTEER MORNING TEA
BUSHWAHZEE
The Bushwahzee barbecue started at around 4:30pm. Amelia Wright, Georgie Goldfinch and Jean and Kevin McDonald were getting it organised. At about 5:00pm the Bushwahzee band started to play and everyone was setting up their chairs, tables and mats. Some people didn't have the barbecue so they brought their own food. At 5:30 the events started and heaps of the parents and grandparents were getting into it. The Bushwahzee band got the parents to dance with their kids in a big circle. Each class did an Australian Christmas song and the audience was clapping along with the beat. The whole night was really great and everyone seemed to enjoy it. Last Friday our SAPSASA cricket team played Eden Hills Primary School. I was delighted to hear from the Principal of that school on Monday about the way Happy Valley conducted themselves. He said that "they were a pleasure to play against, showed a great sporting attitude and were well mannered." Well done boys.
Can
we please ask parents to assist us by making sure that their child can
tie his / her own shoe laces? Firstly it is a safety issue and secondly
this is a skill that they all should have before commencing school. It
will also save parents and staff a lot of time in the long run for
children to be able to do this independently.
Congratulations
to the following students who have received Principal's Awards, for
demonstrating our school values -- COOPERATION / LEARNING /
COMMUNICATION / STRIVING FOR EXCELLENCE -- Aiden Whitmore, Daniel
Rogers, Gemma Brandenburg, Jesse Chudleigh, Dylan Halse, Lachie
Schofield, Ashleigh Paterson, Dayna Wilkins, Claire Davidson, Justin
Szeitz, Gemma Brown, Anna Ellacott, Luke Till, Eden Williams, Jarrad
Tregenza, Jas Mason-Vestris, Michaela Willshire and Maddy Gavin.
Tickets for the Christmas Raffle are now available. Some were sold on the night of Bushwahzee. Tickets will now be available from the school (50 cents a ticket). You may purchase them from the Front Office. Committee members will also have the tickets for sale around the school on some mornings. If parents would be willing to take a booklet of 10 tickets to sell to family members or at work places, please come and see Amelia in the Front Office. There will be quite a large number of prizes -- the first prize will be a coffee table and there will also be several hampers. |

The Forum executive has decided to hold a "Non Uniform" Day on Wednesday of Week 9, December 13th. This time, we ask that, in lieu of a gold coin donation, children bring a can or packet of non perishable food to donate to needy families for Christmas. As explained in the last newsletter, the Rotary Club collects donations for needy families, during the last week of school. This way the children can be involved in this collection. The executive will make posters to deliver to classes in the next few days. Please remember, clothing needs to be appropriate for school and to be Sun Safe i.e. no tank tops.
We are again asking families to make a donation of cans of food, or other non-perishable food items, especially food items suitable for Christmas. These donations will be passed on to needy families through the Rotary Club at Christmas time. Any donations can be brought to school and will be held until Week 9. |

As a result of our successful involvement in the MS Readathon and because we had a high retention rate of Happy Valley students participating, we were rewarded with a whole day visit from a children's Illustrator. Consequently Dave Hackett was flown over from Sydney to work exclusively with Happy Valley Primary Students on Tuesday this week. His sessions involved demonstration of his skills, questioning and practical activities for the students. He also showed several of the books he has illustrated. Caleb and Deayana gave the following comments on this successful day. "Once you get the hang of it, you could use his ideas and you can also make up your own. He taught me lots about drawing that I did not know before. It’s your drawing and there are no rules. I really enjoyed his session." "I learnt that when it comes to drawing, it's easier than what it looks. You can do it if you think you can. He taught me how to draw really cool pictures. He's a really cool artist, knows a lot about drawing and could draw cartoons very quickly. He got us to feel a lot more confident about drawing and helped us to describe what a 'creative drawing' really is. "Thanks to Dave most of the Primary students have learnt how to draw fantastic cartoons." If your child is interested in drawing and you would like to purchase any of Dave's 'how to draw books', see Barb Williams for a flyer and order form.

The following children received a lucky dip for helping make the Resource Centre a great place to be -- Jack Reynolds, Kiara Allen, Georgia Blanks, Ben Schofield, Josh Cryer and Caleb Daniel. Reminder -- All books need to be returned to the Resource Centre for stock taking by the end of Week 7, Friday 2nd December. FOR SALE
Contact the Resource Centre if interested in these items. Judy Miller
On Tuesday this week Josh Robertson was presented with another Novita award, this time for "Recreational and Sporting Achievement." The ceremony was at Regency Park. Josh also received a $200 award.
On Tuesday 31st October at 7:30pm some of our Violin students played in "A Summer Concert" at Elder Hall in the city. Their group was called "Fiddle Time Joggers" and they were dressed as joggers. The group consisted of violin students from Happy Valley, Aberfoyle Park, Clarendon, Blackwood and Eden Hills Primary Schools, conducted by their violin teacher, Jennifer Eime. They played three items, one with their group and two with The S.A. Primary Schools String Orchestra. They played brilliantly. We can be proud of them. Many other schools played different items also. All the schools that were involved learnt and rehearsed their parts separately, then |
came together at the end of the concert for the last two items. Around 200 students were on the stage. What some of the students may have thought of as boring parts, sounded brilliant when brought together with all the other students. It was amazing and sounded fantastic. Well done to those students involved. Kathy Bartel Thanks also to our DECS Instrumental string teacher Jenny Eime who works with our students each week.
Please check our lost property located on the shelves adjacent to the Resource Centre. Items not claimed by the end of the year will be passed onto an animal shelter for bedding.
The "Healthy Lunchboxes" parent workshop was excellent. It was well presented and very informative. It was good to hear other parents' ideas of what to put in our children's lunch boxes that are healthy, fun and tasty. It was worthy going to. Kathy Bartel

23/11/06 Dear Parents This letter is to inform you that at the Governing Council Meeting held on Monday, 6th November, 2006, the Materials and Services Charge and levies for 2007 was set at $275.00. The Education Minister has set the legally enforceable Materials and Services Charge for 2007 at $182.00. Attached is the verification required by The Education Department. There is a voluntary Governing Council approved Curriculum Levy of $30.00 which will assist the funding of the 2007 Site Learning Plan materials and an approved Information and Communication Technology Levy of $18.00 to assist the funding of technology resources. An excursion/performance levy of $45.00 includes Come Out activities for students commencing in term 1. Students will be invoiced before the end of the school year. Our Governing Council has set the fees for 2007 with the understanding that we need everyone's cooperation in the following ways.
The school will receive the full legally enforceable $182 materials and services charge for Happy Valley School School Card holders. This means that school card holders will be asked to pay a total of $93 -- the approved Curriculum Levy, Information and Communication Technology Levy and the Performance Levy. It is essential that families who are eligible for school card apply AS SOON AS POSSIBLE otherwise the school misses out on the government funding and those families will then incur the legally enforceable fee of $182. School Card Application Forms need to be filled in every year. The Governing Council has endorsed the use of debt collectors to recover outstanding materials and services charges. We have tried hard to avoid this but in fairness to all those who do pay their fees we feel that this course of action needs to be taken, particularly when agreements are not met and letters and phone calls are not responded to. If you have in the past, paid your full fees by instalments, we will continue to provide this flexibility during terms 1 and 2. Prue Rosevear, Principal
