WELCOME TO 2007

We welcome all school families as we begin another school year.  It is always great to see students catching up with friends again after the holiday break, settling in to their new class areas and talking with their new teachers on the first day back.  A new school year is an exciting time especially for students, but also families, and believe it or not, even for teachers!  The first day saw lots of very busy teachers and students - all settled back really well and many were exploring the new "Smartboards", which were installed in all classrooms during the holidays.

Let's all work together to make this a really enjoyable, productive and memorable year.

NEW STAFF AT HAPPY VALLEY

As most of you will know, our new principal is Kylie Raymond.  Prior to her appointment to Happy Valley, Kylie was principal at Kangarilla.

Lyn Smart has joined our Junior Primary team. Lyn has come from Morphett Vale East, and will be teaching a Reception/ Year 1 class in Unit 5.

Tom Vercoe is our "new" Year 6/7 teacher, teaching in Unit 2, adjacent to both Simon Mueller and Carol Atherton. Tom has recently been teaching at Edwardstown and Craigburn.

We are also really thrilled to welcome back several staff members.

  • Juno Oka will again be teaching Japanese this year.

  • Doug MacLean has rejoined the team and will resume his position as Primary Head of School.

  • Trudie Petho has again been reappointed to the school to fill a part time vacancy, working with Scott Francis to teach a Year 4/5 class.

  • Bob Beaton will also spend this year at Happy Valley teaching a Year 3/4 class.

  •  Lynn Reimann has also returned to Happy Valley and will be working across Junior Primary classes and also in the Resource Centre.

* Children need to be under supervision and should not be in the yard or in classrooms.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU

A big thankyou to all the parents who have paid their school fees, made arrangements for an instalment plan and/or submitted their application for School Card, this is greatly appreciated.

FAMILY INFORMATION

We keep important family information in the front office. This is vital information if we need to contact parents in an emergency. Please ensure, if there is a change in any of your family details, for example, addresses, phone numbers, emergency contacts, that you update this information in the Front Office.

SOMETHING IS MISSING!

As you would have noticed the two wooden portables that in the past housed OSHC have been removed in the holidays.

The company who did the work did a great job, limiting the disruption to the school by completing the work before children returned from the holidays.

We will now have to look at how we will use the area and re-develop it accordingly.

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC

Our School offers a range of opportunities for students to learn to play a musical instrument. As students become more proficient in their instruments, there are opportunities to perform -- at assemblies and at music evenings.  Learning an instrument is a wonderful skill to develop at an early age and enjoy for life.  Music Education, including instrumental playing, can also enhance a child's development in many other areas of learning.

This year all students, beginning and continuing to learn an instrument, must complete an Application to Learn a Musical Instrument form. These are available from the Front Office.  All applications to learn will be considered by the class teacher, the instrumental teacher and the school instrumental music coordinator (Doug MacLean) before approval is given for students to learn.

Recorder -- teacher Mrs Julie Kuchel
Recorder students, beginning or continuing, need to return the slip below to the Front Office by Friday of next week.

All Year 2 - 7 students are invited to enrol to learn recorder.  Learning the recorder can be an introduction to another musical instrument but it can also be played as an instrument in its own right.  Lessons are conducted on Tuesdays in small groups according to year level and ability.  School approved Yamaha descant recorders can be purchased from the book room for $7.70 each.

The fee structure for this year is:

  • Term 1                    $23.00

  • Term 2                    $23.00

  • Term 3                    $23.00

  • Term 4                    $23.00             $92.00

Fees need to be paid in advance for the term or year.
Lessons will begin in week three and the fees need to be paid directly to Mrs Kuchel. (Phone 8278 2513)

String Program -- teacher Mrs Jenni Eime
Students from Years 3 -- 7 are invited to enrol in our violin program on Tuesday afternoons. Viola, 'Cello and Double Bass lessons are also on offer. Mrs Eime is our string teacher and is employed by DECS.  Costs are $25 per term and a $10 administration fee. Students need to hire or own an instrument.  Violins are available for hire from the school for a one off $60 instrument hire fee. Parents will be invoiced by the school.

Beginning students need to complete and return the slip below.  These new students are invited to come to one 'trial' lesson and then decide whether they would like to continue.

Guitar - teacher Ms Alison Hansen
A number of students have been learning guitar with Alison over the last few years.  She is happy to take new enrolments and can be contacted on 0419825517.  These lessons are held on Wednesday afternoons and will begin in Week 2.

Keyboard - teacher Mr Neil Weber (Dr Rhythm)
Neil Weber has been teaching keyboard for many years at Happy Valley.  For information about keyboard tuition contact Neil on 83706068 or mobile 0413 017 887.   He will be teaching at Happy Valley on Monday afternoons.

Trumpet, Saxophone, Clarinet, Percussion - teacher Mr Tony Hansford
Tony Hansford began teaching groups of students in these instruments last year and is happy to continue. He is keen to accept new students as well as continuing students and can be contacted for further information on 83845371. Tony teaches under the management of Musicorp and brochures for Musicorp, which outline instrument hire arrangements, can be collected from the Front Office.

Drums -- teacher Mr Simon King
Simon King last year began teaching drums to students after school on Thursday afternoons between 3.30 and 6.00 pm. For more information contact him on 0414 841 774 or on his email address  keyboard@sa.chariot.net.au

IGNITE PROGRAM AT ABERFOYLE PARK HIGH SCHOOL

Parents and carers of students in Year 6 and 7 are advised of the following dates regarding the IGNITE (Students with High Intellectual Potential) test at Aberfoyle Park High School.

Applications close on Friday 16th February
Assessment day is Saturday 24th February

Further information about the program can be obtained from the official Ignite website, www.igniteprogram.com or from the Aberfoyle Park High School website, www.aphs.sa.edu.au  Please call Alice George or Chris Turner at Aberfoyle Park High School on 8270 4455 if you require further information.

An expression of Interest form is available from Amelia or Lorraine at the front office.

EDIBLE GARDEN

Do you love gardening?
Do you want to help out you child's class each week?

Our Edible Garden Committee is looking for more families to become involved in the co-ordinating of the garden.  A meeting once a term and general tidy up each start of a season is all that is involved as well as watering during holidays when necessary.

The other way to help is in the class to supervise when planting takes place and weeding once a week.

The students learn from our garden, not only how to grow things, but also the continuous responsibility of looking after a garden.

Please complete the tear off slip if you are interested.

KOOKABURRA CAFE

Welcome back to school.  I hope you all had a good holiday.

Due to an increase in prices, a new menu (purple in colour) was sent home this week.  If you didn't receive one, please pick a copy up from the Canteen or front office.

A 'Help' form was also sent home asking for volunteers.  If you  can  spare  some  time  and  also  see  how the canteen operates, please give me a ring on 8322 6579.  I look forward to seeing you.

I welcome any suggestions or feed back regarding the menu.  We will be holding a Canteen Committee Meeting shortly, the date and time will be advertised in a future newsletter.

LAP (Learning Assistance Program)

Volunteers Wanted!

Companions of learning together

New knowledge you'll surely unwrap
There are treasures to find for a lively young mind
And that's the nice thing about LAP

Max Fatchen

Are you interested in becoming a volunteer in the Learning Assistance Program in 2007?
Are you new to the school and wish to know more about the program?

Volunteers, in partnership with teaching staff, work with students on a one-to-one basis, for a regular session each week.  This individual time creates more learning situations where students can experience success.

Our volunteers find helping in LAP a positive and rewarding experience and we always have children who can benefit from your help.

LAP has get togethers at least once each term with both students and volunteers.  These get togethers are a great sharing time for the volunteers, new friends are made and new skills shared.  The LAP Association has training available during the year for volunteers.

Please fill in and return the attached form to the front office or speak to Wendy Nicolle or Judy Davies.

NETBALL
School netball begins competition in Term 2.  Last year we had a junior and senior team.  It would be great to have one more team.  Training will begin late in Term 1, so forms will be out in the next few weeks.
