FROM KYLIE

I would like to start by saying thank you to all of our school community for making me so very welcome.  Students, parents and staff alike demonstrated very quickly to me that Happy Valley characteristic of being friendly, hard working and fun to work with!

I have been Principal at Kangarilla Primary for the last 6 years and I have been appointed to Happy Valley for 7 years.  It has been my history that I have remained in positions for the majority of my tenure therefore it is my current expectation that I will do so here (unless I win the X-lotto on Saturday).

While I have many ideas of my own about future priorities and plans here at Happy Valley I am also actively collecting information from staff, students and families about what is important to maintain and develop, and what needs improvement.  At our Governing Council meeting on Monday I will gather some more data from a family perspective about these two subjects.

It is however already very clear that our 2007 Strategic Plan priorities need to include ICT and the integration of Smart Boards as a tool for teaching and learning, Numeracy and further development of our student Wellbeing work from last year.  These are all areas close to my heart and areas that I have knowledge and experience in.

The other very obvious area is development of our grounds and buildings and the follow-up on a range of facility issues that have been emerging over the last few years.

Please feel free to pop in and say hello to me at any time, and know that my door is always open to families.  I love hearing about achievements and positives about our school and students as well as assisting families in addressing concerns.  I look forward to working together with all of you over the coming years.

AGM REPORT AND SMART BOARD INFORMATION

Our Governing Council A.G.M. was held on Monday night.
We commenced the evening with a presentation from Carl Noutz about the use of our new Smart Boards.  It was most interesting to note that only about 1000 of these boards have been installed in schools in South Australia and we have 18 of them!

Carl also thought that there were very few schools including both state and private schools that would have a Smart Board in every classroom.  We therefore are not only on the cutting edge but the "bleeding edge" in the use of this technology.  I personally believe that we are about to take a 'quantum leap' in the use of ICT here and the way that we teach and learn will be greatly enhanced by the boards.

Leila W. and James D. in Mrs Saunders' class using their Smartboard.

Another advantage is that families can access the Smart Board software at home. There are two ways of doing this.  If you have Broadband at home just go to www.smarttech.com and download from the site, or next week you can go to our Resource Centre and borrow one of the software CD's.

By doing this, students can work at home easily and bring their work back and forth using either a disc or USB drive.

After Carl we had a demonstration from 6 of Carol Atherton's students showing what they had learnt on the boards in the short time that they have had access.   Thank you to Stephanie K, Jaimee W, Alison J, Amber M, Leah S and Kate S for their participation in the night. Well done girls!

Stephanie K., Alison J., Jaimee W., Amber M., Kate S. and Leah S., our Smartboard 'experts'.

Bob Such also spoke about issues he was pursuing and news from Parliament particularly highlighting the 150 anniversary of that institution in March.

We then moved to the major business of the meeting. Dianne Gordan was re-elected as Chairperson, Georgie Goldfinch Deputy Chair, Jennifer Whitehead continues as Secretary and we are still looking for a Treasurer. This position will be discussed next meeting.

Our other councillors include Judy Hardwick, Sandie Sherriff, Wendy Nicolle, Debbie Cerone, Andrea Chapman, Sue Vardas, Cheryl Hamilton, Gerri McGregor, Odette Holweg, Jo Waldon and Greg Andrews.

The first meeting of Governing Council will be held Monday Feb 19th at 6.45 for a 7p.m. start in the staff room.

ACQUAINTANCE NIGHT

Many parents took advantage of Acquaintance Night last week to meet teachers and to hear about class programs planned for this year.  Teachers were able to explain class routines  and  expectations  and  to  share  the  curriculum

directions being taken this year. They also took the opportunity to meet many of the visiting parents.

Thank you to the many parents who took an interest in their child's education and came to our Acquaintance Night.  If you were unable to attend, ask your child's teacher if there was any printed material handed out on the night that it would be valuable to look at.

Thank you to these Year 7 students --
For their excellent work in helping supervise the creche, which was held on the night.

PARENT CLUB AGM

Parent Club had its 2007 Annual General Meeting on Wednesday February 7th. The meeting was well attended with some parents new to the school joining the meeting.

The President, Andrea Chapman, gave a report of the events of 2006, including activities which had been organised by Parent Club, and thanked parents for their help and support in making Parent Club activities so successful.

All positions were declared vacant and nominations were called for 2007. The following parents will be the office bearers for this year:

  • President -- Andrea Chapman
  • Vice President -- Melanie Gavin
  • Treasurer -- Lee Bache
  • Secretary -- Karen Erlandsen

Meetings are held from 9.00am in the Long Room on the 1st Wednesday of each month. All parents are welcome.

SCHOOL CAR PARK

The school car park is provided for the use of school staff and official visitors to the school only. It is NOT for parents to drop off or pick up students.  Using  it  for these purposes

causes congestion and the safety of children moving through the car park is at risk from moving cars. As parents, please respect the purpose of the car park and drop off and pick up your children in the correct places outside the school boundary.

SAFE ROAD BEHAVIOUR

There have been a number of reports of parents and children not using the school crossing to cross Education Road both before and after school.

We ask that parents model responsible, safe behaviour for our students and use the crossing, where motorists expect to see children crossing.

SPORT

SOCCER IN 2007
All existing and new players who are interested in playing soccer for Happy Valley School in 2007 should keep an eye out for the sports nomination forms to be distributed soon.

Happy Valley competes in the Southern Districts Junior Soccer Association which covers the area roughly between our school and Glenelg.  This is a well-run competition which provides children with lots of opportunities to have fun and play soccer.

The teams that we enter will depend on the age and number of players.  Last season we had a Senior Primary, Senior Girls and under-10 teams.  Any boys and girls turning 8 in 2007 through to Year 7s are encouraged to nominate.

A brief registration night will be held in early March on a date to be advised where we will provide more details about what is involved.
