Inside this issue............ |
Last week it was bought to my attention that a number of students had their mobile phones at school in their bags, so I feel it is timely to remind families about our Mobile Phone Policy. We acknowledge that students may need to bring their phones to school for a variety of reasons, particularly safety issues before and after school, however phones can present some real problems as well, in the school environment. If phones come to school they need to be labelled and dropped off in the morning at the front office. Our policy states that "communication during the school hours of 8.30 to 3.15 will only be done through the school's phones, with the knowledge of office or teaching staff. Where appropriate this can be done in a private and confidential environment. Students may access their voice or SMS messaging service after 3.15 and outside school buildings...Happy Valley School will take no responsibility for phone security or storage unless phones are given to office staff for storage.....parents and students need to be aware that the use of a mobile phone by a student in school hours will be seen as a behaviour management issue." This policy has been made clear to students and is posted on the school Intranet so that students can access it at any time. Highlighting this policy is meant as a preventative measure not because we are responding to a particular incident. Technology is presenting many interesting possibilities, but also some interesting challenges, so we need to ensure that here at Happy Valley we anticipate what these challenges are, and keep in "front of the game."
Families should have received a note about this day during the week. Unfortunately the weather is going to be very warm on Friday (tomorrow) so therefore we have decided to postpone this until Monday of next week. I believe that it is important for our students to participate in community service and events of this kind are ideal in that they promote great community values and give students a chance to contribute locally to a global issue. Environment issues are "hot news" at the moment and I read recently where children often feel overwhelmed and powerless when they hear talk about problems as big as global warming. By participating in cleaning up our school, the Panalatinga Reserve or near-by streets, students are showing that they can have some control and take positive actions that help our environment. Thank you to teachers and particularly Helen Whisson for organisation of the day. Permission is covered by the Consent Form signed by parents under the Short Excursions / Reserve Studies section. This form only needs to be filled out once now, not annually unless student circumstances change.
There are two areas near the school that become heavily congested and dangerous at the beginning and end of the school day -- Greenbriar Avenue on the northern side of the school and Education Road. We regularly hear of near misses of students, and inappropriate parking and use by drivers in these areas.
The arrangements covering these two thoroughfares are different.

Greenbriar Avenue: During peak use times in the morning and afternoon drivers may only stop on the school side to drop off their child, or wait with their car at the end of the day to pick up their child. DRIVERS CANNOT PARK AND LEAVE THEIR CARS AT THESE TIMES. This allows everyone equal access to this area to drop off or pick up only, and reduces the amount of blind spots caused by parked cars as children move through this area. Stopping is not allowed on the opposite side of Greenbriar as this only encourages children to cross between the moving traffic. Education Road: At the front of the school there are parking bays where drivers can stop and park. Drivers must not double rank in front of the school to either drop off or pick up children. Drivers must not park on the opposite side of the road in front of the school on the footpath, or in the Kindergarten car park. If drivers need to park in this area they will find parking in the side streets leading off Education Road. By cooperatively and responsibly using these busy areas, everyone gets more equal access to the space that is available and student safety is much better protected. We will invite support from parking inspectors to monitor the use of these areas if we feel that these arrangements are not being followed.
Last year our OSHC Program moved into the Long Room and the supervising staff have now comfortably adapted their program to their new home. OSHC is now moving on to a new stage, by expanding their new home to include a verandah on the front of the room, to give more undercover space for their activity program. The materials for this new development will be delivered this week and work on the new verandah will begin on Monday. This will give staff and students more activity options out of the sun, or out of the rain, when it comes!
These students were presented with awards at the a 3-7 assembly last week -- Clare H., Amelia V., Jacinta W. and Casey G. from Ms. Atherton's room. Zacharia H. and Robyn C. from Mr. Vercoe's class. Brett E. and Eden W from Mr. Draper's class. Taylah T., Jesse C., Jacob B. and Sam A. from Ms. Whisson's class. There were several other students nominated but the "silly new principal" didn’t understand the award system and therefore didn't present some awards. These students will receive their awards at the next assembly.
All Junior Primary children took home information about a program being offered by the University of South Australia, as part of a research project. This program involves |
screening children's motor coordination. If coordination difficulties are confirmed in the assessment, it is possible that children will be invited to participate in a program. This assessment is being carried out this week, by the researchers. More information will be available after this.

ROSTER Helen King - Manager
The Canteen urgently needs more volunteer helpers -- parents, grandparents, caregivers! No experience is necessary! If you can help fill a gap on our Canteen Roster, please pass your name on to the school, or direct to the Canteen Manager, Helen King. Just some times that suit you fitted in around your other commitments, would be really valued!

After a very successful AGM we followed with our first meeting for the year. We would like to welcome two new parents, Chris Longford and Odette Holweg who have joined us and to also thank those who have chosen to continue. To our knowledge no one is retiring. We have discussed the many events we would like to hold over the following year starting with the Sports Day Hot Cross Bun Stall. The choice of a Tea, Coffee, Hot or Cold Milo and 'hot' Hot Cross Bun will be available to purchase. We are also holding an Easter Raffle with five prizes to be won. Tickets can be purchased on Sports Day from our stall and we hope to see you all there. We will also be sending out to parents and caregivers a roster for volunteers to nominate a time to help on the stall. Karen Erlandsen and Andrea Chapman

We would also like to thank all the families for being so patient over the last couple of weeks. It has been a very busy time. Wendy Wilden and Andrea Chapman
