What do we do well? I asked staff at our first staff meeting, and Governing Council members (as representatives of families) at Council's first meeting to answer two questions. One question was what do we do well here at Happy Valley, and the other was what do we need to improve on. You maybe surprised to learn that when it came to the top answers in each category there was mutual agreement and mutual respect. Staff listed a friendly, harmonious staff as number one, followed by our Japanese program, SSO support, our ICT program and our Resource Centre. Great parental support also rated a highly on the staff list. Governing Council listed Japanese, great staff, ICT program and behaviour management and expectations as the top assets in our school. It was an excellent result to see that all adults in our community are "on the same page" and have similar ideas about what they value. The next step will be to canvass our student group which I will undertake in the next week. Of course there were a variety of areas identified for improvement. Many of these are about our physical environment but both groups agree that "student voice" is an area that can improve and that we need to continually examine and develop our student's ICT skills. One of the major items mentioned on the improvement list is the "damp" issue in our teaching areas. The first stage of this process was undertaken last year, but we have just won considerable funding to continue the work this year. At the moment we are in the tender process therefore hopefully we should see some action before the wet weather comes.

Harmony Day will be celebrated at our school next Wednesday March 21st. This coincides with the United Nations Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination and it provides us with the opportunity to celebrate our rich racial, cultural, social and spiritual diversity here in Australia, and help promote a peaceful and inclusive community. The colour of Harmony Day is orange and the theme is You + Me = Us. Students can wear orange on that day, or National costume from their family's country of origin. There will also be activities in classrooms and as Junior Primary assembly is timetabled for that day it will have a Harmony Day theme.
On Friday, March 2nd, the Junior Primary classes celebrated the 50th birthday of the much-loved book "Cat in the Hat." Children (and teachers, of course), had a great day dressing up and participating in a variety of activities about Dr Seuss's books. Although the day was basically a Junior Primary celebration, some older buddy classes were also involved.
As you can see, everyone really got into the swing of the celebration and looked fantastic. The theme of our junior primary assembly held on the following Tuesday was "Cat in the Hat". This was an opportunity for classes to share what they had been doing about the theme. A special thanks, too, to all of you who sent along books, games, videos etc, to help us celebrate.
Happy Valley School is lucky to be able to meet and look after a group of Japanese people in March. They are students from NOVA, one of the biggest language learning institutes in Japan. They are keen to learn the English language and experience the Australian lifestyle at Happy Valley School. The first group was with us last week and they were so impressed with our hospitality and quality. They even bowed |
a lot because they were so grateful! We learned so much from them too! The next group will be here on Friday the 30th. We can't wait! Oka Sensei
Happy Valley is a safe school, so we say NO to bullying! What is bullying?
What can I do if I think my children are being bullied at school?
What is a Bully Audit? We will be undertaking our Term 1 Bully Audit in the next few weeks. A member of the leadership team will follow up |

with children who appear on the audit a number of times. This lets the children know that we are going to be supporting them to make good choices. We will also let parents know when we have discussed the audit with a student.
This week our Year 6 and 7 students have travelled to Port Noarlunga each day to participate in their Aquatic program. They were able to choose between canoeing, surfing, bodyboarding, snorkelling, sailboarding, waveskiing, fishing and sailing.
The weather has been great, and students have loved the chance to do a different sort of learning out of school!
There are a number of reasons why we may have to contact parents and carers e.g. a child is unwell and may need to go home. Also accurate absentee data is a requirement of DECS which is why we phone on a daily basis if students are absent without explanation. The Department recently conducted an enrolment audit of our school and a big part of the audit was checking absentee data with our phone records. We therefore ask that parents and carers phone the school when their child is absent with a brief explanation of why e.g. illness, family, etc. It is worth mentioning that although the main phone number for Happy Valley School is 8381 7166 we do have three other lines. Their numbers are -- 8381 7221, 8381 7021 and 8322 7071. Thank you for your cooperation. |
At our Junior Primary assembly, several children were presented with Program Achieve awards, for demonstrating one of the keys to success -- Confidence, Persistence, Organisation or Getting Along. These children were Billy T., April G., Liam C., Maddison L., Jackson M., Kate C., Courtney H., Josh R. and Michael D. Well done to all!
BULBS! BULBS! BULBS! Orders and money are due at the Payment Window by Thursday 29th March. Delivery will hopefully be the last week of this term or the first week of Term 2. Happy Gardening!!

HAPPY VALLEY FOOTBALL When all the Sport nomination forms for 2007 have been returned, I will send all players their registration forms and a school generated invoice for $40. If you haven’t filled out a nomination form please pick one up from the front office. Please return the registration form and the payment by 12th April as I have fees to pay before the start of the season. The first game will be on the 1st May. Payment can be made at the Bookroom Window Tuesday to Friday before 9.30am. The first game will be on the 1st of May. We are looking for more Years 2/3 players. Parents are reminded that at this grade the rules are modified. There is no tackling and no bumping, the oval is set up into three sections giving all children a chance to handle and kick a football. It is all about the 2/3's learning the skills of football and how to be a part of a team. Therefore, if your child is in Year 2 and wants to play, then he or she can play football as it is all about development and training. If you have not put your child's name down to play football this year or you have any queries, please don't hesitate to contact me on 8322 3531or 0407798930. Look out for more information on the notice board as the season gets closer. Thank You
