Happy Valley Values.....
"We must equip our students to meet a changing world with lasting values." Olli-Pekka Heinonen (Finnish Minister of Education)

This year as a whole school we will be looking at what values we need to develop in our Happy Valley students in order for them to become resilient, optimistic learners who can become worthwhile members of our community.

We have already started work as a staff on this issue, and we will be developing a research based inquiry question about the impact of explicit values education on student's behaviour and learning.  Of course students will need input into this project, and very importantly families need to be involved in this process.

Some of you will be contacted in the next few weeks by a member of our Education sub-committee and asked to complete a survey form.  There will also be a form with the next two newsletters for people who wish to contribute to the process, but who have not been directly contacted, so that we can have a wide selection of parent responses.

Our set of agreed school values should underpin all that we do here at Happy Valley and be our constant compass in setting school directions.   These values also need to be enduring, clear, simple and workable so that they will give us purpose to all that we do.

Of course we work constantly on promoting good values at a classroom level and our Harmony Day celebrations last Wednesday are a clear example of this.  There were many activities throughout the day that centred on the skills of co-operation, communication, striving to achieve our best, democratic processes and learning new skills.  These things might sound familiar as they are part of our school motto but they are more skills than values.

Have a look at our great picture gallery to see more Harmony Day fun.

Canberra Trip
Our year 7's, plus a variety of staff members set off on Sunday afternoon for their trip to Canberra.   It looks like a great program for them and I'm sure they will learn much, however I'm not sure how much sleep everyone will get during the week!

I know that they will all have lots of fun and come back with many stories to tell us all.

Sports Day
Remember Sports Day next Thursday. It will be the usual early start with children reporting to teachers in classrooms by 8:15am. and a similar format to the last few years. Everyone is looking forward to the day.  The program will be sent home to families by the end of this week.

Swimming
How lucky were we with the weather for our 3-5 swimming program last week!

We had some great personal achievement stories from this program with many students excelling themselves.

Learning how to swim is a valuable life skill, a great form of exercise and an important part of our school curriculum.

Well done to all our students who attended.

Next year the year 3-5 swimming session will be very early in the term so that the weather might be even better!

PAYMENT OF FEES AND BIZGATE

Unless parents have opted for the instalment plan or have made other arrangements with the school finance officer, the materials and service fee and school levies are now overdue.  Statements for outstanding fees will be sent home before  the  end  of  term  1.    The  next  payment  on  the

instalment plan is due the end of week one in term 2, Friday 4th May.

A total of 86 payments have been made over the internet using the Bizgate credit card facility available to parents on the school's website.  One transaction can include payments for a number of invoices e.g. school fees, camps and excursions, sport fees, OSHC and Vacation Care.  The EDID number of a student is the only mandatory item needed for the payment, comments can be written in to explain the payment.

MUSICAL SUCCESS

Congratulations to Jordan Goudy (pictured below), a talented young saxophone player at our school. Jordan, who is a Year 7 student, successfully auditioned for a place in the Primary School's Music Festival Orchestra and has been offered a position in one of the Festival Orchestras. This is a real accolade and we congratulate Jordan on his success.

JUNIOR PRIMARY AWARDS

At our Harmony Day assembly, several Junior Primary children were presented with Program Achieve awards, for demonstrating one of the keys to success. These people were Bridget C, Jaiden W, Tegan G, Lachlan G, Shannon F, Josh M, Annalise A. and Sophie C. Congratulations to these children.

BULLY AUDITS

As mentioned in the last newsletter, we will be undertaking our Term 1 Bully Audit in the next few weeks.  A member of the leadership team will follow up with children who appear on the audit a number of times.  This lets the children know that we are going to be supporting them to make good choices.  We will also let parents know when we have discussed the audit with a student.

Parents can help by discussing bullying with children, especially the different types of bullying behaviour, also described in the last newsletter.

JUNIOR PRIMARY VISITS TO BETHSALEM

Junior Primary classes are going to visit the aged care facility, Bethsalem, over the next days, to sing Easter songs for the residents. One group visited on Wednesday this week and the second group will perform next Wednesday. This is a great opportunity for children to perform the songs they have been learning.

AUSKICK

NAB AFL Auskick is an introductory program for primary school-aged boys and girls and their families.  Through weekly coaching sessions you'll  learn  the  skills of the game,

play footy in a fun and safe environment and make plenty of new friends too.

The Program is designed for children aged 5 -- 8 years of age and teaches the fundamental motor skills which will give your child a great foundation to go on and play any type of sport.

Happy Valley School is very supportive in maintaining an Auskick centre at the school.  We are seeking a couple of mums and/or a couple of dads to help coordinate the centre and invite all parents to come and have some fun with their children.  All resources (balls / coaching program etc.) supplied and every assistance offered by experienced development staff.

For any enquiries please contact either Scott Francis at Happy Valley School Ph: 8381 7166, Simon Brandenburg (Panther League School Delegate) on 0407 798 930 or Warren Ploenges (SANFL) on 0408 834 884.  For further information on NAB AFL AUSKICK please log onto www.aflauskick.com.au

SPORT

SOCCER
Thanks to all who attended the registration night this week - please return any outstanding registration forms by next Wednesday.

Practice for the Senior and Under 10 teams will commence on Wednesday 4th April straight after school.  Meet at the shelter shed on the oval and be ready to start by 3.30pm with shin pads and a water bottle.  If new players do not have boots yet that won't be a problem.

However, whilst we will start practice next week, we still require a coach for the Under 10 team.  I appreciate the many offers for assistance on game days but training will be limited unless we can provide suitable supervision.  Please contact me on 8381 5820 or 0438 838 158 if you can help in any way.

(30/4/07) the 6/7s will train on Monday and Thursday and the 4/5s and 2/3s will train on Tuesday. They will be advised at training if there will be an extra session that week leading up to the start of football on Saturday the 5Th May. All players must attend training.

If children misbehave at training or during the games they will not play that day and if it continues they will miss games.

The first round for all grades will begin on the 5/7/07. Programs will be given out at training.  If you have not put your child's name down to play football this year please don't hesitate to contact me on 8322 3531or 0407798930.
