PUPIL FREE DAY AND SCHOOL CLOSURE
It was advised in an earlier newsletter that our school closure would be on Monday September 10th, to coincide with the Aberfoyle Park High School closure.  We have since been notified that this day is District Athletics Day, which affects quite a number of our children.

Therefore Governing Council has now approved Friday September 7th as our School Closure day.

We are also required as a school to train in the new Child Protection Curriculum. In order to access Department personnel for this training we have asked Governing Council to approve Friday August 24th, for a Pupil Free Day as this is the only date available.  Please put these two dates in your calendar.

Friday August 24th -- Pupil Free Day
Friday September 7th -- School Closure.

FROM JUDY

After our visit from three young Port Adelaide Football Club players, on Tuesday, it seems a good time to reinforce the message which the players gave our Year 3 - 7 students. Their main focus was about healthy lifestyles and the importance of maintaining a healthy life for all of us, and for those who want to play sport as well. It was great to hear from these young men who were such positive role models.

Two of their messages were:

  • Make sure we get enough sleep, and

  • Make sure we eat a good breakfast. (One of them told us that he has 8 Weetbix each day!)

They really stressed the importance of getting plenty of rest and how this enables football players to get the benefits from their extremely intensive exercise regime.

Andrew Fuller, who some of the Junior Primary staff are going to hear next week, has a great website with helpful hints for parents. This is what he has to say about making sure that our children have a good breakfast.

"If your Mum ever said have fish or eggs for breakfast because it's brain food, she was right! As long as it's medically safe to do so, a breakfast that is high in protein (think cheese, milk, bacon, eggs) and lower in carbohydrates (think cereal, orange juice and toast) promotes concentration and learning. Also encourage your students to drink lots of water -- the brain runs on it!

Students who don't eat breakfast are not only more likely to gain weight; they will also have to work harder than others to do well at school."  Andrew also has lots of good advice about how we can optimise learning environments.

MUSIC NIGHT

This year's school Music Night will be held on Tuesday 7th August.  We would like all Choir students to be available on that night and all instrumental music students whose teachers feel they have reached performance standard.  This will be a real celebration of musical achievement in our school!

PORT ADELAIDE PLAYERS' VISITS

Three Port Adelaide Power players visited the Primary assembly this Tuesday to share information about healthy lifestyle choices including balanced lifestyles, healthy diet, being active and non-smoking. Power player Damon White, and Ryan Williams (Central Districts) and Gavin Grose (North Adelaide), who are yet to make the AFL side, shared experiences and answered numerous questions from students.

Georgie and Corey introduce the Power players

After the assembly students were given the opportunity to collect autographs, and meet the players personally.

Damon White signing autographs.

On Wednesday Roger James and Josh Francou visited with some other players to run football skills clinics for students. The weather held, in spite of some threatening clouds and a few raindrops, and a fun time was had by all.

Being shown the finer points of kicking.

The football clinic was great. I really enjoyed the tackling bit.  Even though I landed in the mud it was still fun.

Taylah - Mrs Whisson's class

I loved doing the tackling with the blue pole. I laughed the most when we did tackling. I loved it when the ball kept falling out of our hands.

Sophia - Mrs Whisson's class

Shooting for goal.

I liked the bump bag. It was the best.

Liam - Mrs Whisson's class

One of the funniest things at the football clinic was the tackle bag. The hardest thing was trying to hit the post with the ball.

Sarah - Mrs Whisson's class

The bump bag was a real hit!

PEDAL PRIX BIKE-A-THON

On Sunday 17th June, the Pedal Prix squad headed down to Mary Bywaters Kindergarten in Reynella. We met at 9:30am for a 10:00am start. We split into three groups and headed off at different times. Our group was the second group to leave.

We went along the old railway line which is approximately 13km to Noarlunga Downs. We stopped at a bridge and had a small rest. After approximately 5 minutes we headed back.

When we got back there was a 'sausage sizzle'. Every rider received a cold drink and a sausage. We completed the Bike-a-thon around 11:45 after riding approx. 26km. It was tiring and everyone's legs hurt, but it was fun!

Bike-a-thon

The bike-a-thon was a great success last weekend.  The weather was kind to us, perfect bike riding weather!!  All riders who attended completed the course: from Old Reynella along the old train line down to Old Noarlunga and back. WELL DONE.

Mitsubishi Training

Don't forget Mitsubishi training this Sunday (24th June) at 1pm.  This is the last Mitsubishi training before the six hour at Victoria Park on Sunday 29th July.  Bring your bike and helmet and be ready to improve on your times in the cars!!  Only six weeks to go.

WORLD VISION 40 HOUR FAMINE

We recently had a visit from Kieran Johnson, a World Vision spokesperson.  He talked about the children who live in poverty around the world -- more specifically in LAOS.  We saw DVD's of these children which highlighted their very meagre way of life: eat only bugs and rice, and drink dirty water.  They have no education, no toys, no clothes or shoes.

Many children have expressed an interest in helping these children by participating in the 40 hour famine.  They DO NOT have to go without food for 40 hours -- it is suggested 8 hours at the most.

Alternatively, they may go without TV, DVD, X Box, lollies for 40 hours, in fact anything which gives them a sense of "doing without".

NEWS FROM FUNDRAISING

Shop For Your School

Brochures were recently sent home for this promotion. We would like to stress that there is no obligation for our school community to shop at Marion, but, if you do, it would be great if you could participate in the program. Check the brochure for details.

Family Organiser Fundraiser

Forms went home this week to offer the opportunity to purchase these. Amelia has a sample in the office if you would like to see one.

Wheel-athon

We have decided to have a "Wheel-athon" as our next main fundraising activity. This will replace the "Obstacle-athon", which we have had for the last few years.  It will be held in Week 2 of next term, on Tuesday July 31st.

For the Wheel-athon, students will be able to bring bikes, tricycles, scooters, skate boards, blades, etc. All students who bring their 'wheels', will need to have a helmet in order to take part.

Sponsor forms will go home before the end of term -- this will enable people to get sponsors during the holidays.

Quiz Night

Advance notice! Our Quiz Night will be on September 22nd, the Saturday of Week 9 next term. Information about booking tables will come home early next term. In the past we have had excellent support from families for this event. We will again be asking for donations for prizes, either vouchers or other suitable items. We will also be asking local businesses to donate. If you have any connections, please let us know.

VOLUNTEER NEEDED!

I am currently updating the school's asset register which involves identifying equipment and checking the serial numbers etc.  This is a two person job so I would really appreciate a helper.  It will probably take 25 hours to complete the task but the hours can be spread over different days and weeks depending on the availability of the volunteer.

If you would like to help, please call in to the Resource Centre any day except Wednesdays and have a chat.

Regards,                                               Denise Lucas

HUNGER BANQUET

Recently, the student teacher in Bob Beaton's class held a Hunger Banquet in the Hall.  Details were published in the last newsletter.

As a result $61.55 was raised and forwarded to Oxfam Australia.

NEW EFTPOS FACILITY

At long last, we have moved into the 21st century and now have an EFTPOS machine in the finance office.  This will greatly improve the efficiency of payment processing.  Unfortunately, the school is no longer authorised to accept telephone or mail payment of invoices and at present, we are not able to accept debit cards.

Credit card payments can also be made via Bizgate over the internet from the school's web page.  The only necessary detail is your child/children's education department identification number at the top right hand corner of any school invoice.  Using this number, parents can make any number of payments on one slip, e.g. OSHC, school fees, sport fees etc.

Page 5

It is hoped that in the near future, both EFTPOS and Bizgate will be available to parents who prefer to use their debit card to make school payments.

REMINDER
The final payment for families on the instalment plan is due on Friday 27th July (the end of the first week after the school holidays).  All other material and services invoices outstanding at that time will be forwarded to the debt collection agency for further action.

SAPSASA REPORTS

Four of our students -- Jack Spacie, Tom Hall, Leah Wright and Courtney Nicolle recently represented the District in Football and Netball.  Here are snippets from some of their journal entries.

 FOOTBALL -- By Jack Spacie
Day 5 -- Friday 8th June
I woke up tired again and felt like my legs had fallen off.  It was the last day of the carnival and we had to be there by 9:00am. Even though the game didn't start until 10:30am.  Before our game started we watched the aboriginal school boy's team -- they were called the All Stars and they were very cool.  Most played without footboy boots and some just played in their socks.  If they got a goal a couple of the kids did back flips to celebrate.  They were so athletic.

Our game started and our opposition Lower Eyre Peninsula was not small.  They kicked the first goal and they were off.  There was a huge guy in their team and he didn't look like a year 7 -- he killed us.  The final score was 11 goals to our 4 goals 1.

After our game there were presentations for the gutsiest player in our team -- it wasn't me, it was a kid called Braden who won it.  Then there was the big presentation for the team who won the whole carnival.  City South won it for Division 1 and Lower Eyre Peninsula won it for our Division 2.

NETBALL -- By Leah Wright
Wednesday 6th, I woke up very sore and tired, my arms were aching and my legs were basically numb.  I did the usual thing packed my bag and we went to school to get Courtney.  We left school at around about 8:45am we got stuck in traffic and I got very stressed out with mum.  We finally got to ETSA

Park and Courtney and I ran in because we were so late.

My first game was at 9:45am, Court 11 and we played Lower Eyre Peninsula.  This game started off very hard and they beat us in the first quarter and we were even in the second quarter.  Then in the next half we beat them easily.  We won.

We watched the other Southern Valley team and went to see my Auntie Mandy's team that she was coaching.  I had lunch (chips and gravy) again.  Yum!  I got ready to play my last game for the day which was against Hills.  They were really rough especially in the last half because they were losing.  We won thank goodness!  Now I was really sore and tired after this game.  Mum took us back to school to meet Wendy.

Thursday 7th, I found it very hard to get out of bed this morning I was so sore and very tired.  Once again I got my bag ready and mum took me down to Aberfoyle School again to wait for Deb.  I was very excited because our second game was the one we had to win to get the gold medal.  I knew we could do it but everyone had to work together.

Deb got there at 9:30 today because we had a late game.  Our first game was at 10:50 on the indoor courts again, against Salisbury West.  This team was a little bit rough but my team was too good, so they were getting fired up. We won that one.

I had lunch which was fruit salad and a red powerade.  My second was at 1:45 and court 23.  We played against Adelaide South East and this team was really rough.  When they went for the ball they would elbow you, and bump you, they were really getting fired up.  We won against them by 3 which was really good.

This day was really good because my auntie Rebecca, my gran and my grandpa came out.  My grandpa has come out every day so far so I think I'm very lucky.

NETBALL -- By Courtney Nicolle
On Monday the 4th of June, I had my first day of District SAPSASA Netball.  We played down at ETSA Park.  The people in my team were Leah (from our school), Kayla, Maddy (from Hub Primary), Joe, Hannah (from Braeview), Rachael, Amber, Anna (from the Campus) and Zoe (from Hallett Cove).  So we were all from around our district area.  We had a really good team because we also all got on very well, it was great.

Our first game was at 9:45am and we played on one of the indoor courts.  I was off the first half of the game and then went on as WD in the 2nd half.  At the end of the game the score was 18 - 36 our way.  We were all so happy how our first game had gone.  We then watched our 2nd team and they also won.  So both our teams had had a great start to the day.  We cheered so much.  Both our teams had played against Elizabeth.

Our 2nd game was at 12:40 against Central Eyre Peninsula and the game was out on one of the outside courts.   I played

Page 6

a full game in WD.  We won again and the score was 19 - 49, so we won by a fair bit.  It was a great day and I was really looking forward to the rest of the week.

So then we got to Friday, which was the last day of SAPSASA.  We were all so happy but sad because it would be the last day of playing together.  We had an early game so it was at 9:40am, I got to play a full game but it was in WD, which was ok but I don't normally play WD, I normally play WA or C.  We went against Tea Tree Gully on an outside court.  We didn't play as well as we had done during the week because we were so excited and couldn't settle down.  We still ended up winning but it wasn't by as much as we probably could of.

Once the game had finished we were so excited because we had won the whole carnival and we were going to get a gold medal.  We felt so proud of ourselves because we hadn't just won the carnival but we had won it in Division 1A, which is as high as you can go.

SPORT

The Sports Committee would like to acknowledge and thank parents and families for the following -- crowd behaviour, transporting, volunteering for jobs, co-ordinating the sports, marking lines, canteen and managing.

Without the great support from parents and excellent sportsmanship of the students, Happy Valley wouldn't be the great school it is so THANK YOU.

NETBALL
We had a great weekend of netball!   The year 7 team won again, all players are improving well. I am proud of their sportsmanship and team work.

The year 6/7 team were beaten in the end but are starting to find the positions they are most comfortable in, which is being reflected in the scores.

Thank you to Heather Jesshope for taking on the role of coach for this team and thank you to the other parents for their support, especially Mrs Kneebone for helping out this week.

The year 3 / 4's have improved immensely!  Their score was very close (5-3)  this  week.   Mel Gavin  does a  great  job

giving the ten girls a fair go each week and trying to juggle who plays which position to give the team its best result!!

Because this is the first week all three teams have played at the same courts it was the first chance I have had to see how each team is progressing.  Thank you to all the parents for supporting your children's sport.  Your best 'crowd' manners were on display, too.

SPOT THE MATE AND ROUND THREE
As always the annual "Spot the Mate" night was a great success with players and parents puzzling over numerous boards set up to mate in one or two moves.  Thank you so much to all the parents who turned up early to help with setup, and stayed on to crew the tables.
ROUND 3
Back to the serious business of competition, and our juniors coming off the back of a strong win, went down narrowly 2-3 against a combined debutante team called Searise.  Jacob Bondarenko made it two in a row, while Aiden Whitmore and Austin Gordon survived well to stalemate.

Junior Team -- Aiden, Sam, Deayana, Austin & Jacob

The seniors recorded their first win for the season with a sweet 4-1 victory over Woodend which is coached by former Happy Valley Principal, Brian Marshall!  Jacob Parker remains undefeated while Adam Davidson, Laura Smith and Luke Szeitz all opened their accounts.  Luke came from behind under countdown conditions to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.  Well done!  A special mention to Jesse Hommelhoff who executed a blinder of a victory in seat one.
