FROM KYLIE

Christian Pastoral Support Work
After discussion with Governing Council and staff we have put in a submission for a Christian Pastoral Support Worker (School Chaplaincy Program). This is an innovation of the Federal Government and they heavily subsidise the program.

If we are successful in gaining the grant, we would have someone based in the school part time, who would be available to work with students and families. They could be involved in individual counselling with families because of a crisis at home (e.g. a separation or divorce) or acting as a mentor or advocate for families, or assisting families to access welfare or community support services.

Other local schools including Aberfoyle High have had very successful Christian Pastoral Support programs and I know that we would see such a program as a great asset to have here in our school.

Illness
It's that time of year when we have many "bugs" around the school and many of our students are ill.  The Front Office has been very busy caring for sick students and ringing parents asking them to collect their children and take them home.

If your child is unwell the best place for them is at home resting. Please use common sense about when your child is well enough to return to school.  Many students are returning for a few hours only of a day, and then we are sending them home again as they are still very unwell. By keeping them home not only are you making it easier for your child to recover but also preventing the spread of these bugs in the class.

A last reminder, if your child is ill, please leave a message at the front desk or let your child's teacher know, so we can mark the class roll appropriately

MUSIC NIGHT

On Tuesday night last week our talented music students entertained a large audience of parents and friends of the school. The evening was compered by Year 7 student Stephanie Kneebone, and began with our violin students performing. Other instrumental music students who performed played recorder, drums, saxophone, trumpet, guitar and piano. The school choir under the direction of Kylie Raymond and Stephanie Kakoschke performed three songs which they will perform again in the Festival of Music in a few weeks time at the Festival Theatre.

All of our students performed brilliantly and not only showed their talent, but provided a great evening of entertainment.

A VISIT FROM OUR POLICE COMMUNITY LIAISON OFFICER

On Wednesday two Police Officers, Ric and Sarah, from Sturt Police, visited our school and spoke to Junior Primary children about being safe. Ric spoke about the different types of police officers and about how children can keep themselves safe. They also spoke briefly about Safety Houses and bullying. Sarah is our school liaison officer.

Another visit is planned in the future for our Primary age students.

Some of Mrs Saunders' children have described what they learnt.

Sarah and Ric came to speak to us about how to be safe.  If you get lost in a shop you can go to the front of the shop and they shall say your name.  We saw their badges.

WHEELATHON -- THANK YOU

The Fundraising Committee would like to say a huge "Thank You" to all our families who have helped to raise money for our school through the Wheelathon. So far money returned to school is in excess of $1900. This is a fantastic effort. It is still not too late to return money -- we are really hoping to exceed the $2000 mark. LITERACY AND NUMERACY TESTS

On Wednesday and Thursday of last week the Year 3, 5 and 7 students sat the LaN tests. There were just a few students who had been ill but came back to school on Friday, which allowed them to catch up on tests they had missed. All students who were present on those days completed the tests, some with support from extra staff. Students and parents will get the results of the tests next term.

LITERACY AND NUMERACY WEEK UPDATE

We have been successful in our application for grant monies to facilitate our plans for this week which is from 3rd -6th September. Classes will be involved in Numeracy activities throughout the week.

"Reach for the Stars -- Stepping Up with Maths" provides activities involving mathematics in which schools throughout Australia will be participating. A range of activities will be available for students to investigate the relationship between 'foot size' and height. Teachers will choose whether to spend a few minutes on the core activity, or use the other support materials to put together a more extensive learning sequence.

MON. 3rd Sept. In-class activities
TUES. 4th Sept.

6 classes working at The Hub Shopping Centre
Display of student work

WED. 5th Sept.

Open Morning
Morning tea
Assembly

THUR. 6th Sept. Review and Celebration
FRI. 7th Sept. School Closure

We will be inviting community members to share how they use numeracy every day. We hope everyone will get involved. A flyer will be coming home later with further details.

NUMERACY NIGHTCLUB

Sue Higgins and Stephanie Kakoschke are once again planning a musical extravaganza involving their classes in showcasing their arts program. This year we decided to tie in numeracy as well, as a prelude to Numeracy Week, and hence the catchy title decided on by students.

Everyone has been working really hard to rehearse songs, dances and script and we will be presenting the finished product in Week 6. Parents and families are working hard on costumes and helping soloists with their practice at home. We will be performing in the hall on Tuesday 28th August at 10.15 am and on Wednesday at 12.15 pm and again at 7 pm.

LORIN NICHOLSON UPDATE

Don't forget to keep the evening of September 13th free! Lorin Nicholson is a renowned Australian guitarist who will be at our school on this day.  He will work with students throughout the day and perform for parents and other community members in the evening.  We are the only public school in South Australia to have secured a visit this year.

Lorin will perform and address students R-7 in the hall in the morning and present a music workshop for instrumental music students in the afternoon. This is a wonderful opportunity for these students to be inspired!

In the evening Lorin will perform a recital with tea and coffee served for $5 per adult in the school hall.  His CDs will also be available for purchase. Visit Lorin's website for further information at www.seesharp.com.au.

YARD BEHAVIOUR -- CONGRATULATIONS!

As I have recently been updating and reviewing records for yard behaviour, it is gratifying to note that 250 of our 350 students have had NO time outs for the year. Another 50 students have had one time out and then never returned. Well done to these students and keep it up!

Stephanie Kakoschke

SOUTHERN CHESS LEAGUE

Round 6
A fabulous effort by both our junior and senior teams this week.  The juniors took on Woodend and performed very strongly to win their second round for the year.  Sam Archer made it two in a row, Jacob Bondarenko and Austin Gordon broke back into the winner's list and Deayana Batten continue her terrific form with a hard fought stalemate. A 3.5 -1.5 victory for the Valley!

The seniors came up against league leaders Brilliant Bishops who had only dropped a total of seven points for the entire season.  We took three more off them to win 3 -- 2.  Luke Szeitz made it four in a row with another cool victory and it was back to back wins for Laura Smith and Jacob Parker.  A special mention to Adam Davidson who recorded his second win for the season, which was very much deserved.

This Thursday August 16 is the Lightning Carnival which is a free-for-all involving senior players only.  The night will be held at the usual venue, Woodcroft College, from 7:00pm sharp!

SOCCER
The Senior Primary lightning carnival is on next Tuesday 21st August at Bowker Street. You will need to be there by 5.30pm so that we can be organised for a kick-off at 6.00pm sharp. Please let me know beforehand if you cannot make it.

The final game of the season for the Senior Primary team has been rescheduled to avoid the Pedal Prix weekend. The game will be played at Hawthorndene on 22nd September with a 10.15am kick-off.  This will enable all of our Year 7s to finish their school soccer at the same time.

The trophy presentation for the seniors and Under 10s will be held back at Happy Valley School after the games on 22nd September. We plan to do a barbecue lunch -- more details will be provided closer to the event.

Good luck to both teams in their games this week.

FOOTBALL
It has been a great season for football; with plenty of wins and a few loses. Only two games remaining, so if you haven't seen your children play this season this is your last chance to see them in action.

The 6/7s are playing their SAPSASA Semi Final on Friday at home (school oval) against Sacred Heart College at 11.45am.  If you can make it to support your child I hope you will attend.

Presentations will be held at the school on the 1st September at 11.30am. Parents have been going around to other parents on game days looking for a donation towards the coaches' presents. Please give them a donation, as coaches are hard to come by.
