FROM KYLIE

Welcome back to the term. This promises to be a very busy and productive term with once again many things on the calendar. It is amazing how quickly the year is flying past and Christmas will be here before we know it.

Mind Readers and Class Placement
Just a reminder that the "non-mind reading Leadership Team" is still accepting letters about class placement up until COB tomorrow Friday 26th October.

Visitors from the Philippines
We are right in the middle of Asia Week and as a school we have a strong commitment to understanding and working with our near global neighbours.

As part of this commitment we will be hosting a group of Philippine Educators on the 12th, 13th and 14th of November. I will also spend the next day with them facilitating some planning activities.

This is a great opportunity for the school to work with people from somewhere totally different and share with them some of the great educational practice that happens here.

They are particularly interested in looking at out Early Literacy program and the way we assess our students. I hope we will all make them feel very welcome.

Concert Band
I would like to congratulate Jordan G., Aaron F., Alex A., Sean G. and Lucette R. for their selection and participation in the annual Primary School Concert Band performance held last night at the Showgrounds.

WELCOME

We would like to welcome our six new Reception children who started school last week, in both Liz Loveday's and Lyn Smart's classes.  Byron H., Samuel W. and Sarah T. are with Liz in Unit 4, and Ethan G., Jacob K. and Dechlan H. are with Lyn in Unit 5. The children were welcomed at our whole school assembly last week and have settled really well.

Welcome back.
We would also like to welcome back Tom Vercoe who has returned after long service leave last term. Welcome also to Ana Paul, Adele Nightingale and Andrea Niven, who are replacing Helen Whisson, Lyn Smart and Lynn Reimann for the first weeks of term. Helen and Lyn are taking some leave and Lynn Reimann has a broken arm. Judy Miller is fulfilling Lynn's role in the Resource Centre until she returns.

ASIA WEEK

This week we are celebrating Asia Week across the school. Classes are participating in a variety of activities. On Tuesday we had a whole school assembly at which Mrs Saunders' class performed a short play. We also had a demonstration of Aiki-Budo, a form of Japanese Martial Arts. Individual classes are also participating in workshops.

Eleanor K. in her Kimono

During the lead up to Asia Week, the Year 3/ 4 classes visited the Himeji Japanese Gardens with Oka Sensai. We also visited China Town at the Central Market.

Mr Beaton's class spent many weeks making papier mache masks and have used the Smartboards to locate all of the countries of Asia.

During Asia Week the students have really enjoyed the Asia Week assembly, cooking and eating Oka Sensai's pancakes and the martial arts session.

Mrs Saunders' class performing at assembly

"In assembly, Mrs. Saunders' class started by singing "Cho cho", which means "butterfly". We all got dressed up in Asian clothes, and makeup. Even Mrs Saunders wore a kimono, and we divided into three groups -- cho cho, bun bun and ka-e-lu. (Butterflies, bees and frogs) We made the butterfly puppets in art lesson. Judy Tester made the bees and the frogs for us.

The next day some people went on with making the butterflies. My favourite part was getting ready for the performance. I liked putting the make-up on.

By Melanie E (Mrs Saunders' class)

"Our class was organising the assembly. Oka Sensai started teaching us "Cho cho" first. We sang in Japanese. "Cho cho" was the easiest song. The next song was "Bun bun." This means "Bee." Then we learnt "Ka-e-lu", which means "Frog." At the start, it was embarrassing when we sang the frog song. We dressed up in costumes from all different Asian countries. We were very excited when we were getting ready to start.

The backdrop for the special Asia Week assembl

                           Studies of Asia day
Our students had some great opportunities to learn more about Asia through a range of activities in each classroom and at our special assembly. Activities included making pancakes, fried rice, masks, origami, haiku poems, Japanese gardening, painting, story telling, travel brochures, craft walcing, lantern and fans.

                             Mrs Saunders class
Mrs Saunders class performed Japanese animal songs for the school. They had beautiful butterflies, bees and frogs. The performance was very, VERY good. They must have worked very hard to put on a great performance like that. I really liked the costumes they had on. They were BEAUTIFUL! The performance was great.

                                  AIKI-BODO
The AIKI-BODO demonstration (which included Japanese sword demonstration and all different ways of protecting your self.) was really good! Lots of people had a great time. The noises were really loud and effective. I loved it and I hope everyone else liked it too!

                                         Props
The props were made very well. There was a cherry blossom tree, a bridge, a temple and a picture of mountains. The picture of Mt Fuji was stunning. The props were made beautifully.

                                         Facts
Not many people know about Asia that's why I am going to tell you some facts. Fact one: Asia is the biggest continent. Fact two: Almost 4 billion people live in Asia and that's almost

Page 3

60% of human population. Fact three: There are 53 countries in Asia. So there three things you probably didn't know about Asia.

Special thanks goes to:
Mr Draper his for cooperation and generosity, Callie Smallwood, Clare Davidson, Georgia Braddon, Eden Williams, Lucy Vardas, Teea Price and Jordan Fowler for making props and being the assembly MC. Jenny Gormly and Mrs Whisson's students for creating the Mt Fuji backdrop. Mr Mueller and his students for making the Cherry Blossom decoration and Mrs Saunders and her students for their fantastic performance.

WORLD TEACHERS' DAY

Tomorrow is World Teachers' Day and across the world, the wonderful work done by teachers will be recognised in all sorts of ways. At our school we will be holding a special assembly at 11.20 in the Hall, to recognise the adults who do paid work in our school. Parents and friends of the school are invited to attend the assembly and join in the celebrations!

HEALTHY LIFESTYLES WEEK

This year Healthy Lifestyles Week will be held from 19th to 23rd November. During the week, students from right across the school will have the opportunity to be involved in a range of activities from Tae Kwon Do to Wheelchair Sports. There will also be many different 'Come' n' Try' activities, like Rugby, Basketball and Korfball. During the week there will also be a focus on healthy eating with 'The Giant Fruit Eat In' each day and some classes preparing healthy meals to try.

Grandparents are invited to visit on Wednesday of Healthy Lifestyles Week from 9.00 to 11.00 am to watch the Whole School Health Hustle, The Giant Fruit Eat In and the other healthy activities the students are involved in.

The emphasis for the week will be on students being healthy and active throughout the week, and right throughout their lives!

DISCO

We will be having our school Disco in Week 5, on Friday November 16th, in the School Hall.  A number of students will be helping with the planning and organising.

The times will be:
Year Level:
Reception -- Year 3:      6.00 -- 7.15pm
Year 4 -- Year 6:           7.30 -- 9.00pm
Year 7:                         7.30 -- 9.30pm.

Tickets will be on sale during the week prior to the night, outside the Resource Centre. Price of tickets - $3.00 for R-3 and Year 4 -- 6, and $3.50 for Year 7.  More information will be sent home soon.

There will be a canteen on the night with drinks, including spiders, and snacks.

Students need to be dropped off and collected from the Hall.

We would really appreciate help from any parents who are available on the night. Please remember, for safety reasons, only children who attend our own school are able to attend.

WORKING BEE -- SUNDAY 11th NOVEMBER

We need help to complete some biggish projects around the school yard. Fathers, mothers and older students are needed and there will be jobs for everyone! The Working Bee will begin at 9.30 am and finish by 12.30 pm.

The work to be done is:

  • Place safety mesh under the roof of the Unit 4 verandah

  • Begin the redevelopment of the area south of Unit 4 from where the timber buildings were removed

  • Move the old OSHC store shed next to the oval

  • Place the new railing in the centre courtyard

  • Rake the soft fill under the play equipment

Many volunteers will help spread the load and will make sure that we get all the projects done. Please bring rakes and shovels to help.  If you are available, please let us know by completing the tear off slip at the end of the Newsletter.

SPORTS AGM

The Annual General Meeting of the School Sports Committee will be held next Monday night 29th October at 6.30 pm in the staffroom. The coaches and managers of all sports teams and the coordinators of the sports are urged to attend. All interested parents are also very welcome.

EARLY ARRIVAL AT SCHOOL

Just a reminder that students are not to arrive at school before 8.30 am, unless they are in Before School Care.  This is a very important issue as staff are on duty only from 8.30 am and therefore students are not supervised if they do arrive early.  Any students who do arrive before this time must stay in the area next to the canteen and are not to go into the playground areas.

CAR PARK

A number of parents and teachers have observed children using the car park as a short cut to get to classrooms. Please reinforce with your children that this is a really dangerous thing to do, with staff and deliveries arriving in the mornings.

RESOURCE CENTRE

A reminder that the school has book bags for sale in the uniform shop for $8. They are required to promote care and responsibility for the books borrowed from the Resource Centre by the Junior Primary classes. There are quite a few younger children not bringing them to school. It is far cheaper to protect books for $8 than having to pay replacement costs for large Picture Fiction books and Large Non-fiction books which have an average cost of $24. Any damaged book (from drink spills or food spoilage, etc.) is billed to the family so that a replacement book can be purchased.

If choosing to buy a book bag from other shops PLEASE make them large and strong enough (nearly pillow case size) to cover large non fiction books - like dinosaur or pet books. We have a wonderful assortment of books for the children to choose from and which we love to see all the children reading.

Regards, Resource Centre Staff

REMINDER
The Book Fair is coming in Week 4 5th -- 9th November.  Pre-sale viewing on Friday 2nd November for classes.

READING ALOUD TO YOUR CHILDREN

It's never too early to start reading to your child -- the sooner the better.  You can even start before children are born.

Read aloud to your child every day for at least 10 minutes.  Make it part of their daily routine and try to make it at the same time: 'story time'.  Before bed is okay, but don't encourage children to go to sleep when you read.
During reading time turn off any possible sources of distractions, like the television and radio, so that you and your child can be absorbed by the story.
Let your child see you read books and magazines for enjoyment too, and when you ask what they read at school that day, don't forget to tell them what you read.
Share the reading with your child, maybe page by page, or even book by book.  Let children play with and touch the book.  Let them help you turn the pages and learn how books work.
Read with expression, feeling and animation.  Make it soft and make it loud, but not too scary.  Try using different voices for different characters.  Read the story with your face as well as your voice.
Talk about the pictures and the words as you read but make it a game ..... not work.  Reading is FUN!
Let your child have opportunities to choose a book to read.  Join your local library and borrow books for your child and yourself.
Many children's books have been recorded for tape or CD.  If you are not confident reading to your child,  then  why  not choose  an audio version.  Look

for words everywhere, such as street signs, shops, and letters.  Read them with your child.

Remember that just as sport is great for exercising the body, and good food exercises the insides, reading exercises the mind.
Make reading a family activity -- brothers and sisters, aunts and uncles, and grandparents can do the reading too.
When you are shopping for groceries let your child read the shopping list and contents of grocery items.

These tips were developed by Christopher Cheng, Australian Children's author and National Literacy and Numeracy Week (NLNW) 2007 ambassador.

KOOKABURRA CAFE

You may be aware that the Department of Education is pushing for new Right Bite canteen guidelines by 2008.  Our canteen has been using healthy products but have a couple that don't meet the new criteria.  We will be looking at those shortly.

If you have any ideas of items your children would like, especially snacks at recess or even lunch, send them to me and if they meet the new guidelines we will consider them.

A suggestion was a cup of baked beans with a slice of bread and butter or a hot potato with baked beans and cheese.

Please call in and see me or phone 8322 6579.
