FROM JUDY (BECAUSE KYLIE IS IN CANBERRA)

It is impossible to believe that we are at the end of Term 1.  And what a busy term it has been!

Looking at our calendar, we have had such a wide range of activities this term. We had a great start to the year, with our activities across the school, around our new school values.  Then, if you add all the other highlights such as swimming and aquatics for all students, Acquaintance Night, the Student Leadership Camp, Sports Day, Harmony Day, JP children singing at Bethsalem, District Athletics, Canberra Trip for the Year 7s, the Police Band and ..... the list just goes on and on.  No wonder that 11 weeks has flown so quickly. And of course, there are also learning programs, just happening every day.

We are so lucky at Happy Valley and I think that it is important that we acknowledge here, the fantastic work of our great staff team, who go way above and beyond the call of duty.

We at Happy Valley wish all of our families a happy and safe holiday, and we look forward to seeing everyone at the start of Term 2.

HARMONY DAY

Our school celebrated Harmony Day on Thursday March 20th, just prior to Easter. Junior Primary classes had activities in their units and shared them at the Junior Primary assembly the following Tuesday. Primary classes also participated in activities which were shared at a special primary assembly on the Thursday.

About the Primary Assembly..........
"The last assembly which was for Harmony Day was one of the best assemblies ever. Monica's dance was very, very good and it was very exciting. The class introductions were excellent. I made a flag for Harmony Day. I tried to show joining hands supporting the Earth. The idea being that if we all worked together we could live in peace and harmony."

By Alex M.

"Why do we have Harmony Day?

We had Harmony Day assembly to celebrate Harmony Day. Harmony Day is to remind us to live in harmony peacefully. The colour for harmony is orange. I like Harmony Day because I am a peaceful person and I would like the world to be peaceful."

By Sarah P.

"For Harmony Day our class had an assembly, which we hosted. It was also Persian New Year's Eve on the day of our assembly which means that Persian New Year's Day and Harmony Day were on the same day 21st March. I taught all the girls in the class a dance for happiness and joy. We danced it at the assembly -- it was fantastic. We were nervous because it was in front of lots of people but it was fun too. I would like to do more dancing."

BULLY AUDIT

Our bully audit will be carried out across all classes before the end of term. Teachers will discuss the audit and its purpose with children and the audits will be done confidentially.

As described in our Bully Policy which was sent home recently, we will follow up with students who appear on the bully audit a number of times. These students will have a discussion with one of the leadership team and we will let parents know if this occurs. The follow-up from the bully audit is not meant to be punitive. Often just discussing with students the behaviours, which have been reported about them by others, brings a positive result. However we do need to have consequences for ongoing bullying behaviour and the normal school discipline policy is applied if this happens.

If you have not received a copy of the policy please call in to the front office and collect one.

CYBER BULLYING -- HOW CAN WE HELP?

There have been numerous articles in the media about cyber bullying, which can be an issue both at home and school. Cyber bullying, as it has become known, includes text or images posted on personal websites or transmitted via email or mobile phones. The following information about parents' role in supporting their children comes from the website "Bullying No Way." The website address is:  www.bullyingnoway.com.au

This website is worth checking out.

Do you think parents could help?
Many young people say that they wouldn't report cyber bullying  because  most  adults  don't  know that they have a

cyber life - and if they report, then the technology will be taken away from them.

They are also likely to take the position that their online activities are their business. But parents have a moral, as well as a legal, responsibility to ensure that their children engage in safe and responsible behaviour -- including online behaviour.

So what can parents do?
Get involved and be aware

Learn everything you can about information and communication technologies and how your child is using them. Talk to them about the places they go online and the activities that they are involved in.
Encourage your child to come to you if anybody says or does something that makes them feel uncomfortable or threatened. Stay calm and keep the lines of communication and trust open. If you "freak out" they won't turn to you for help when they need it.

Take action if your daughter or son is being bullied online

Watch out for signs that your child is being bullied online -- a reluctance to use the computer or go to school may be an indication.
If the bullying is coming from a student at the same school, meet with school officials and ask for help in resolving the situation.
Report any incident of online harassment and physical threats to your local police and your Internet Service Provider (ISP).
If your child is bullied through a mobile phone, report the problem to your phone service provider. If it's a persistent problem you can change the phone number.

Encourage your child to develop their own moral code so they will choose to behave ethically with the technologies

Talk to them about responsible use. Teach them to never post or say anything that they wouldn't want the whole world - including you - to see or read.
Work with them to create a contract or agreement with clear rules about ethical behaviour.

PEDAL PRIX

This term has been mainly involved with entering the bikes for this year's events, electing the Parent Committee for 2008, planning fundraising activities to help fund a new bike, and recruiting students into the two teams. We still need a few more students to complete the numbers needed for this year.  If your Year 6 or 7 child is interested in joining Pedal Prix, support them.  It is a great family activity and also a great way for students to stay fit and healthy!

Last week the bikes were out on the netball courts at lunch time for a 'Come and Try' ride for students who hadn't done Pedal Prix before. Next term the serious preparation begins!

MITCHAM GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL

A staff member and two students from the Mitcham Girls High School will be visiting our school on Thursday 10th April, the last Thursday of term at 1.30 pm, to speak to all Year 5, 6 and 7 girls. They will be talking about what Mitcham Girls can offer the girls for their secondary education.

The presentation will be in Carol Atherton's Year 5/6 class area and parents of the Year 5, 6 and 7 girls are most welcome to come along and listen.

Oka Sensei has designed some special awards for children who work well in Japanese lessons. The first of these awards were presented at our Junior Primary assembly, to the following students: Sharni B., Ronan W., Kellsie M., Jason H., Trinity E., Tara M., Madison G., Liam M., and Tayla S.

At our Junior Primary assembly in Week 9, these students received awards for demonstrating one of our school values -- Respect, Responsibility or Integrity: Aleesha B., Nikki F., Lachlan F. and Sam K.

CANBERRA TRIP

On Sunday the Year 7 students and their teachers left the front of the school at 5 o'clock, for the long overnight coach trip to Canberra. There they have spent the week getting to know our nation's capital, and focusing on the many Civics and Citizenship activities programmed throughout the week.

This is a highlight of our Year 7's last year at our school and reports from those on the trip indicate that everything is going well. There will be lots of stories early on Saturday morning when the travellers arrive home again!

DISTRICT ATHLETICS DAY

Last Wednesday 33 students represented our school in the annual District Athletics Day. This year it was held at the Reynella East Schools and involved the 14 schools that make up the Southern Valley SAPSASA District. SPORT

Soccer
Training for the senior primary team will get underway on Tuesday 8th April from 3.30-4.30pm and will then be on each week upon the return to school in Term 2.

Under 10 training started this week and will be on at the same times.

Please ensure that all outstanding registration forms are returned by Monday 7th April so that I can finalise team numbers and complete team registration with the Association.

Under 10 coaches, Shaun Weller & Paul Martin, and myself look forward to seeing all players at training next week.

Gary Kite - Soccer Co-ordinator

Happy Valley Football
Football season is right on us now with only three weeks to go.  All players have received their registration form which must be returned to the front office as soon as possible.

Will all 6/7's please respond to the form regarding the Mini League as I have to put a team in by Friday night so that these names can be placed in the Footy Budget?  I have the possibility of securing an AFL Game (at AAMI Stadium) for the 6/7's but I still require players to play on the 20th of April at South Adelaide Football Club.  If I don't get enough players the 6/7's will miss this chance to play at AAMI.

Coaches have requested that all players this season be at training so they have a good idea on the numbers.  Please wear correct clothing and boots to training as this saves wear and tear on your school clothes.

If children misbehave at training or at the games they will not play for that day and if it continues they will be asked to miss games.

P.S.
Thankyou to the players and parents of 4/5's for playing on Sunday at short notice.  Great fun was had by all.

See you at training next week.  Have a safe and enjoyable school holiday.

If you have not put your child's name down to play football this year or have any further queries, please don’t hesitate to contact me on 8322 3531or 0407798930.

Thank You

Simon Brandenburg - Football Coordinator
