PUPIL FREE DAY -- MONDAY 23RD JUNE

This year the school has had a focus on Wellbeing, with students and with staff. Wellbeing takes many forms, but together they all contribute to the happiness, confidence, energy, openness, enjoyment, calm and caring of those involved.

We began the year by looking closely at our school values -- Respect, Responsibility and Integrity -- with all students, and making them explicit. Students have continued to revisit these values and the messages that they give, as the year has unfolded. We have also established a Student Leadership Council which allows students a more transparent and effective role in school decision making. These are just two of the many things we are doing to improve Wellbeing in our school.

On Monday all staff will spend the day reviewing our progress in the development of Wellbeing, and then planning for future developments. The future planning will include the new Student Protection Curriculum and how we will implement it in our school through the second half of the year.

The Child Protection Curriculum provides a pathway for children and young people to increase their learning:

  • About feeling safe and their right to be safe

  • To recognise acceptable and unacceptable behaviour and attitudes

  • That they have a right to take action if a person engages in abusive behaviour towards them and threatens their safety

  • That it is important to tell trusted people about such situations and to keep telling a range of trusted people until action is taken

  • That they may have to keep telling people until they are believed

  • That help is available to them within their communities

  • That they are at greater risk of abuse by known and liked people than by people unknown to them

  • That they can change their feelings about people that they have liked and trusted

  • That children and young people can be abusive to each other, given that society involves unequal power relationships

  • That they have the right to understand how unequal power relationships operate in society and how these might be changed

  • That young people have the right to protection from abuse and unfair practices in the workplace

The curriculum will take into account the developmental stages of the children when it is being presented.

Because all staff are involved in the Pupil Free Day, and we will be working off-site, the school will be closed for the day.

DOUG'S RETIREMENT CELEBRATIONS

As announced in an earlier newsletter, Doug MacLean will be retiring at the end of this term.  Doug has been at Happy Valley for more than 13 years and we would like to celebrate his contributions to our school and say Goodbye.

In Week 10, we are having a special school and community farewell.

When: Tuesday July 1st.
Time: 4.00 -- 6.00pm.
Where: In the School Hall

We would like to invite parents who would like to acknowledge Doug's wonderful history at Happy Valley to join us at this special event.  There will also be a number of invited guests who have worked with Doug in times past.

As this is a catered event, please phone Amelia or Lorraine to let us know that you will be attending.

Please note: This is an adult's only event.  Students will be able to farewell Doug later in the week at the assembly.

END OF TERM ASSEMBLY

Students and parents will be able to farewell Doug at our final assembly in week 10, on Friday July 4th. Parents who are unable to attend the special event on Tuesday 1st July and would like to say farewell and thank you to Doug are most welcome to join us at this assembly.

The assembly will start at 1.30pm.

INDUSTRIAL ACTION

On Tuesday 17th June most of our staff joined the current industrial campaign.  The school offered a modified program for a small number of students who needed to be cared for.  No class teaching program was available for the day.

All the staff wish to thank our parents for their understanding and support.

SCOTT CREEK SCHOOL STAFF VISIT

Scott Creek School is investing in Smartboards to be installed in their school.  Because our school is well down the track in its use of this new technology, with Smartboards in all teaching areas, the Principal of Scott Creek School, Rob Houston, has arranged for a number of his staff to visit our school next Tuesday morning, to learn about how our staff use this amazing new resource.

The visiting teachers will observe how students work with the Smartboards, and talk to teachers about how the interactive boards are integrated into their teaching programs.

SPORT

SOCCER
In a rare event, both teams are playing away at the same venue this week -- Forest Reserve, Forest Avenue, Black Forest.  Under 10s kick off against Goodwood at 9.00am so be there by 8.30.  Seniors kick off against Goodwood at 10.00am so be there by 9.30 (or earlier to support the Under 10s).  Note the earlier start times than for our home games.

We continue to record some solid results with the Under 10s having strong wins over the past fortnight.  A 7-0 victory in the night game against Tabor College was followed up with another 7-0 win against  St.  Teresa  on  Saturday.

A great team effort without conceding a goal in the past three games.

The senior team went down 6-4 to Seaview Downs in a tight game last weekend.  The players fought back well to level at 4-4 from being 1-3 down, however a couple of late goals to the opposition allowed them to claim the win.  With some tough games coming up, the seniors will need to continue to work hard on their teamwork.

Gary Kite - Soccer Co-ordinator.

FOOTBALL
It has been a great 7 weeks of Football so far with all teams having convincing wins. I have been very impressed by our 2/3's, which are all new to the game displaying the skills that they have been taught.

It has been good to see some parents helping out when the games are played at Happy Valley and I have been very impressed with the children's attitudes towards football this year, WELL DONE.

The children that have been asked to play for the other team have all shown great sportsmanship.  Thank you, as other schools and the Panther League has praised Happy Valley for this.

Our 6/7s represented the CROWS last Saturday Night at AAMI Stadium.  It was a terrific night and I thank the parents for getting your child there in time.  Well done 6/7s from Dean and myself on your excellent behaviour.

This year 4/5s and 2/3s are having a lighting Carnival. 2/3s will be played at Reynella East on the 5th July Round 9 and are playing for a Shield.  The 4/5s were to play on the 26th July but this has now been changed to the 2nd August as the original date clashed with Soccer. I will be needing help in the canteen as we start at 8.30am.  Yes that means you must be there at least by 8.00am so your Coach can arrange what players he has.

Also donations to the canteen would be much appreciated eg: cakes, toffees, biscuits etc.  Thank you to all the parents that have already helped out as it does make my job a little bit easier as there is a lot involved.

When Happy Valley is playing at home I am looking for volunteers to help out in the canteen, goal umpires, time keeping and scoring.  If you are unsure on the day ask the team managers or Coaches, (2/3 Ray Wilden, 4/5 Greg Halse, 6/7's Dean Cox or myself.

Remember that all DOGS (including lap) are not permitted on school grounds so for 1-1.5 hours on a Saturday morning you can leave your dog at home.

PARENT CLUB NEWS

Thank you to all who helped at the 'New Parent Morning Tea' and for your contributions.  A very warm welcome to all new parents and caregivers.

Reminder:  Wheel-a-thon this Friday 20th.
A tea, coffee and cake stall will be run by us so if you can help please meet Karen and Andrea at the Canteen at approximately 8:45am.

Donations of cake or muffins etc. would be greatly appreciated as all proceeds from the tea and coffee stall will support Caleb Daniel's State Football Trip as mentioned in the last newsletter.

Thank you all once again.
Cindy Kershaw -- Secretary.
